Acquisition & Support Challenges • Anticipated decline in Defense budgets will strain our acquisition system

– Must find ways to reduce development and production costs – Need industries help to reduce costs on every program – Explore opportunities for international partnering on future developments

• Take advantage of economies of scale--FMS partners are key enablers – Focus added attention on work force & process management

• Program will require better restraint wrt requirements – Today, system requirements flow from many directions – Weapons development timelines do not meet requirements or the threat – Quick reaction efforts are not part of the weapon’s road maps

• Making weapons adaptable & precise – Weapons must be effective in rapidly changing employment scenarios – Selectable effects

• From low collateral damage to HE • Successful against a broad array of targets, stationary and moving & all weather

– Increased use of modularity and scalability • Enables multiple employment options/effects using common munition • JDAM weapon family is excellent model 31
