Chapter 37.3 The Respiratory System
Chapter 37.3
The Respiratory
System
Respiratory system
Primary Function: obtaining O2 and removing CO2.
Respiration = bringing O2 into our bodies, blood carries that O2 to our tissues, O2 diffuses into our tissues, CO2diffuses from tissues to blood, blood returns to heart to become oxygenated again.

Respiratory system
structures
Pharynx space, not a structure, , passageway for food and air
Larynx a.k.a. voice box
Trachea windpipe, , cartilage
Respiratory system
structures contd
Epiglottis flaplikestructure that stands upright, allows air to enter larynx, during swallowing it presses downward and prevents food from entering air passages
Respiratory system
structures contd
Activity! Try and swallow and breathe at the same time? Could you do it?
No, because your epiglottis closed during the
swallowing reflex.
Respiratory system
structures contd
Bronchi passageways to lungs
Bronchus Bronchioles Alveoli
Respiratory system
structures contd
Lungs 2 lobes that house the bronchioles and alveoli; sealed in a pleural membrane
Elastic
Respiratory system
structures contd
Lung cake, mmmm!
Cilia and Mucus dust trappers, move dust toward pharynx to be swallowed or spit out
Respiratory system
structures contd
Occurs between alveoli and surrounding capillaries
O2 and CO2exchange occurs by diffusion
Gas Exchange
Capillaries
Gas Exchange contd
Breathing
Lungs are sealed tightly in pleural membranes in the chest cavity
At the bottom of the cavity is a large, flat muscle called the diaphragm
Controlled by medulla oblongata
During inhalation, the
diaphragm contracts and
the rib cage rises up.
This expands the volume
of the chest cavity.
The chest cavity is sealed,
so this creates a partial
vacuum inside the cavity.
Atmospheric pressure fills
the lungs as air rushes into
the breathing passages.
Breathing contd
Often exhaling is a
passive event.
When the rib cage
lowers and the
diaphragm relaxes,
pressure in the chest
cavity is greater than
atmospheric pressure.
Air is pushed out of the
lungs.
Breathing contd
Breathing contd
Activity! Build a Lung/Lung Capacity
Breathing contd
Activity! Heart rate, breathing rate and exercise
Circulatory and Respiratory
systems work together!
We will be moderately exercising. Please let me know if you have a medical condition that I should
be aware of.
Asthma
Bronchitis
COPD- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Emphysema
Influenza
Laryngitis
Lung cancer
Tuberculosis
