VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

This time of year, many non-members ask me the same question: does SOS go on sabbatical for the winter? They, along with many new members, have no idea how much goes on in our winter season. Our new team is hard at work. On January 11th

Now is actually the best time to get involved. You can meet people, make new friends, and nurture your SOS network. It is an investment that grows. You will feel more relaxed joining others when the sailing season begins and you are contemplating sailing, and others will feel more comfortable having you join them. Unsure where to begin? First, remember to renew your membership. Then, join a committee. Every committee has room for another member. Many of our members participate in multiple committees and then some. Every issue of the Whisker Pole has contact information at the end of the issue. If you go to a meeting and it is the first time you are there, let the chairperson know. We would also like to do some short videos. (Are you a videographer with a little time to help? Please volunteer.)

, more than twenty Board members and Committee Chairs came together for a full day session of sharing and planning for the new year.

The next day, a large group gathered for a Brunch, and a Board meeting followed that. Before and after there have been numerous Fireside Chats as well as planning for Spring Training and the Awards Banquet.

Education is sizzling. Last year we were looking for a new education chair and we were very fortunate to have Linda Casucci and Debra Roane step up and take it on. They have been deeply immersed on many fronts. The long sought after revision of the Basic Skills Manual is just about complete. They interacted with various committees, enlisted the help of numerous individuals, and gave untold hours of attention to making it a better vehicle for our members. Their dedication made it happen, which is incredible stuff when you consider they also have been orchestrating Spring Training, amongst other things. Now it is your turn. Sign Up! Spring Training is a great nautical educational event. Simultaneously it is a social opportunity to meet friends, see people you may not have seen for awhile, and make new connections.

Advances are also being made in other vital areas. Our new Cruising Chairs, Peggy Green, Jim Brooks, and Cynthia Park, quickly and efficiently developed a great cruising schedule for this year. Look at the calendar and you will also see their creativity at work e.g., “Let them Eat Cake.” Yum! Bringing attention to membership and recruitment two new chairs have been adopted and will be starting soon. Thank you Cathy Laws and Nora Kelly. Just Add One is this year’s mantra. You will be hearing more about this throughout the year.

I look forward to seeing you soon. Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)!

The Annual SOS Sock Burning Ceremony- March 23

We sailors eagerly anticipate the start of our sailing season! In celebration of our upcoming time on the water, we bid the blustery winter season adieu! Just how do we do that? SOSers gather for the Annual Sock Burning to celebrate the Spring Equinox, and share stories of past sails and future anticipation.

In the Chesapeake Bay, especially in the Annapolis area, we celebrate the seasonal change with “The Burning

of the Socks!” No longer do we need to protect our toes and ankles from the wicked chill of Jack Frost. So bring those odd socks, you know the ones that have lost their mates, socks with missing heel or toes, or just those that are on their last legs and toss them into the fire in this Spring celebration of the Spring Equinox. We’ll celebrate with friends, anticipate future sailing, tell tales of past adventures, and share food and drink. Details are provided in the Fleet Exercises section.

Sock Burning is an Annapolis tradition, and we WELCOME EVERYONE to join in the tradition. Register early as

attendance is limited to 30. Bring your favorite sailing story or song as there will be a prize! Questions? Contact Kitty St. Romain,[email protected].

Medical Emergencies on the Bay - First Aid and CPR/AED Richard A. Green, Safety Chair

Are you prepared to handle Medical Emergencies on the Bay? Have you dealt with the bay’s sea nettles – do you know what to do? A crew person has some chest pain, looks pale and weak, and is rubbing her left shoulder – do you know what to do? Your friend falls overboard into very cold water – do you know what to do? A

member of the crew is diabetic, disoriented and irritable – do you know what to do? It’s hot, the skipper is sweating profusely and appears to be disoriented – do you know what to do? Unfortunately, sailing is not without risk. Over the last few years we have had significant safety events, three of which involved evacuation of the injured to the hospital. If you are isolated out on the bay, do you know how to get help – do you know what to do? According to the Safety Institute of Maryland, “When medical emergencies occur aboard a vessel at sea, quick and appropriate action becomes a life-saving event. Falling overboard into cold water, suffering a compound fracture from a fall, or having an allergic reaction to a bee sting can become a major trauma unless

there is someone aboard who knows exactly what to do. The best way to ensure the best possible outcome is through First Aid Training.” This is especially important when you realize that it takes nearly 2 hours to get an injured person on a boat into the hands of EMS personnel – do you know what to do? A new First Aid for Mariners is being offered in combination with CPR/AED by the Annapolis Fire Department EMS program as an all day event on March 1st – the cost to Members is only $30 and you will get both First Aid and CPR/AED certificates good for two years. This American Heart Association course, taught by paramedics, is being tailored to incorporate our sailing concerns on the water. Space is limited to 30 participants.

Now is the time to review and update your First Aid and CPR/AED skills! Space and enrollment is very limited, so REGISTER NOW! See February Fleet Exercises and Shore Leave for more info.

for online registration; March 5th postmark for mail-in paper registration

Registration Instructions

Spring Training is both a fun and educational event that includes many new members who are unfamiliar with the "routine.” We ask that all registrants read the instructions below before calling with questions. Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after deadline (see below). Included in the cost is a $5.00 non-refundable fee in the event that Spring Training is cancelled for any reason, including weather. See snow emergency instructions on page 19. Please note that classes are filled on a first-come first-served basis, so don’t delay registering! Online registrations cannot be modified, so register carefully. Registration for specific classes is limited. SOS reserves the right to adjust the class schedule to meet demand for key classes. Upon arrival, check in at the registration desk and pick up your class materials. Please be prompt and courteous; speakers are volunteers as are all the administrative staff. Anne Arundel Community College is a non-smoking and alcohol-free campus, including the parking lot. Please do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages anywhere. A continental breakfast, a buffet lunch and an afternoon snack are included in the cost of registration. Please note, however, that no food or drink is allowed outside the cafeteria.

To register online: • We encourage online registration. Go to the website, www.singlesonsailboats.org, and you will find a

section for Spring Training. You will see something similar to the paper registration form, also published in the Whisker Pole. Please note that you can only use a credit card online; we cannot process checks online. If you do not wish to use a credit card, you can register by mail with a check. See below.

• Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 9th

• deadline.

Choose the courses you would like to attend by clicking on the drop-down menu. If a course you select is “full,” it will not appear on the menu. This is one of the advantages of registering online. You will know your schedule when you register. Please note, however, that last-minute changes are possible due to circumstances beyond our control, so be sure to check-in at registration for your materials.

Cancellations must be received via phone or e-mail no later than March 9th

To register by mail:

Use a zero if you do not have a second or third choice, or if you do not wish to attend anything during that session. Entering a zero will not assure you your first choice, however, because classes are assigned in the order of registration.

Mark Your Calendars ! Book Your 2014 Cruis es ! By: Cruising Co-Chairs Jim Brooks, Peg Green and Cynthia Palmer

The days are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger – yup, it’s time to make plans to get out on the water! This season we have 18 weekend cruises, 10 weekends with daysails, 13 midweek sails, a first mates cruise, and an extended cruise up the Chester River to charming Chestertown. For weekend cruises, we’ll get an April 12-13 jump on the season with the ever-popular IRS Cruise. Come on - just get a tax filing extension and go sailing that weekend! Also back by popular demand are: a Shakedown Cruise; a DNR Party (wicked pirates, wickeder wenches!); a Summer Solstice Anniversary Cruise; a Seafood Feast; a Chili Cook off; a Goose Cruise; and a Blue Lips Cruise. This year we’ve added a Shawlapalooza Cruise (9/6-7) for the Janie Meneely concert-on-a-barge in Shaw Bay. We also invite you to come watch the start of the Great Chesapeake Schooner Race on 10/6 just south of the Bay Bridge. For the remaining weekend cruises, here’s your chance to let your imagination and creative spirit dazzle your fellow SOSers We’ve got a Kentucky Derby cruise (think big hats, mint juleps, win/place/show prizes); a Luau cruise (many tropical drinks, fun music, leis, hula skirts, sarongs, Hawaiian shirts); an Everything Red, White and Blue Fireworks Cruise for July 4th

; a French Appetizers and Desserts Cruise to celebrate Bastille Day (mais oui!); and a Let Them Eat Cake (‘Cause I’m Not on the Barge Trip) Cruise (in Harness Creek – think pods, dinghies, exploring beautiful Quiet Waters Park, maybe renting kayaks?).

We’ll have a few split destination cruises to accommodate both north- and south-based boats and give you a chance to sail rather than motor to a destination. A handful of cruises may enjoy a full moon in a clear evening sky. Lastly, at the request of skippers we’ve tried to be even-handed in selecting both northern and southern Chesapeake Bay destinations and a few spots we’ve not visited for a while with SOS.

Just a reminder for both skippers and crew – if you want to enjoy sailing Saturday and/or Sunday but miss that heater, fan, or A/C at night, sign up for day sails on weekends – the perfect solution!! Get a handle on upcoming weather and make your decision to sail just a few days ahead. Sail the wind with no set destination imposed on the boat. Minimize prep – just pack a lunch and go ‘cause you‘ll be back in time for dinner ashore. Maybe some sails could be scheduled later in the day if it’s super hot. Day sails are also great for new members needing to get checked out on the Basic Skills needed to qualify for weekend cruising. And for those who have weekend commitments but can get away on Wednesdays, mid-week sails are offered through the season. Enjoy the Bay on a weekday when it’s almost all yours! Less traffic. Fewer big wakes. Hardly any nasty language on the VHF.

So get out your calendar, check the full schedule elsewhere in this issue, and get cracking if you want to take advantage of a fantastic SOS Bay Cruising season. We’ll see you on the water!

Rafting Seminar for Skippers, FMs, and Crew

George Hollendursky, Raft Captain

February 8, 2014, 9:30am - 12:30pm Edgewater Library, 25 Stepney Lane

Continental breakfast provided

Rafting is an important aspect of SOS cruising and doing it safely is critical. This seminar is for everyone in SOS. Learn how SOS builds linear and circle rafts including where and how to set an anchor, place fenders, secure lines, approach in the wind, and effectively communicate on the boat and with the Raft Captain.

This session covers Raft Captains’ considerations involved in raft building such as advance planning, general guidelines for all rafts, special considerations for circle and linear rafts, handling emergencies, and ways in which skippers and crew can assist the rafting process.

In mid November Elizabeth Hubley and Lorraine Fassett spent a week in Turkey on a whirlwind tour. “Starting out in Istanbul we saw the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. From there and traveling down the western coast we saw the amazing sites and antiquities of Troy, Ephesus, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pamukkale and Perge in Antalya. We also managed to do some shopping along the way. “Lorraine, I would hope for no less!!” Sounds wonderful. And Betsy Kimmel just returned from another fantastic voyage with Enrichment Voyages to the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico! “This time I was working with the Children's Program. You can see a LARGE pirate (related to the DR and Columbia...educational!) in the summaryat http://www.semesteratsea.org/2014/01/15/enrichment-voyage-sails-through-caribbean-central-and-south-america/. The program is educational! No casinos, no gambling...just enrichment on all levels!” Edith Goldman married her long-time partner Mike. Edith has no plans for this to interfere with her sailing activities. Ben Kaufman wrote, “Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) holds a New Year’s Day potluck and football-watching party open to members and guests. Several SOS members are also EYC members, and they often attend the event, including Linda Nahin, who brought Meeps Yox to the 2014 party. Part of the potluck is a 50-50 raffle, in which people buy tickets, a winning ticket is drawn, and the proceeds are split evenly between the winner and the EYC Junior Racing Program. Getting into the spirit of the party, Meeps bought raffle tickets and WON the 50-50. Although she attempted to donate her winnings back to the Juniors, they would not take it, insisting that she keep her winnings. So, next time you see Meeps in an SOS setting, make HER buy YOU a drink.” On Friday the 13th
