Giving others confidence, giving others joy, giving others hope, giving others
convenience: giving, is of infinite magical effect.
Knowing all-encompassing, knowing peace, knowing modesty, knowing respect:knowing is of limitless intelligence.
People who give freely and generously are the richest people in the world. People
who always seek from others are the poorest people in the world.
For most people, giving to oneself is easy, but giving to others is difficult. So how
can we harvest without cultivation? How can we have a wealthy life without giving?
Giving is the most beautiful thing in the world. Give others some good words,
give others a smile, show others our sincerity, and render services to others. hese
kind giving acts beautify our lives and purify our mind. Giving maintains harmonious
relationships within our society.
!lthough it is wise to beware of the negative acts of giving" giving others
worries, giving others sadness, giving others embarrassment and giving others
problems. he Sutra in Forty#two Section stated, $%ne who raises his head and spits
to the sky, the spittle falls back on him. he same goes with someone who throws dust
against the wind. &nstead of going somewhere else, the dust returns to defile hisbody.$
'efore we give something bad to others, we would do well to heed the (hinese
proverb, $)hat you don*t want, don*t give to others.$ )hen we give good things to
others, the value also differs according to the contents of giving. +onating money is

&nvestment means making profit out of capital. &nvestment can turn a small sum

)hen we do good deeds, we may have to wait for years before we are rewarded.

&f we want to become rich through the 8otto lottery game, we need to work on it,

con9uer the whole world. He fought and won many wars in many different places.
However, when he came to the &ndian %cean, he didn*t know how to con9uer the

'uddhist teachings have taught us to focus on harmony, relationships, popularity and
fairness. &n the Heart Sutra, it says, $Koid is form and form is void$. he real world of
our lives is actually $non#arising, non#ceasing, non#increasing and non#decreasing.$

Things happen when all the conditions are ready. Things end when all the conditions
cease.
"hen all the conditions are ready, everything goes smoothly. "hen all the conditions
are not ready, everything fails.
)e are happy when we get something and unhappy when we lose something.
However, we can never tell whether it*s lucky and unlucky when something bad
happened. here*s a (hinese saying that $2ven if we lose the west side in a war, we
may still win the east side in another battle.$ he book, 1oots of the +harma
mentioned, C&ts very natural in our lives to get and lose something.$
Sometimes, it*s worthwhile to lose some money in order to save a family. &t is sad
to lose something, but it is also happiness to get something in return. However in
some cases, it is a great loss to lose good and close friends but be left with a lot of
party friends and debtors. hat would be a worthless situation.
he feeling of possessing and losing are conditioned. &f something belongs to me,there is no need to fight and compete with others. &t will be mine eventually. &f
something is not mine, no matter how hard & try to get it, it will never be mine.
Sometimes, it*s hard to tell whether it*s good to get something or it*s bad to lose it. &t
all depends on the conditions. )hen you get something, you must make the most of it.
ou will find the thing you lost when all conditions are ready to arise.
)e can always earn back the money and capital that we had lost. However, it is
more difficult to regain our lost personality and morality. &t is easy to make friends,
but difficult to find loyalty. &t is difficult to find loyalty but easy to lose it. here are
many philosophical thoughts between $to have$ and $to lose$.

"illing to give happiness to others.
4ou are close to the %uddha3s heart.
"illing to give good conditions to
others, you have assimilated the
%uddhist teachings.
2very one of us should do beneficial deeds for all during our life time. Speak a
gentle word, do a kind act and create a good condition. 8ike the (hinese saying, they
could be called the $three eternal contributions$ which actually refer to gaining honor,
being a good role model and writing inspirational and positive books. !ll these things
can be a legacy to future generations. hey can be inspired, emulate the achievements
and learn something as well.
! legacy is not necessarily something visible, solid or valuable like money or
property. ! legacy is not necessarily something that must be left for the descendants.
he goodwill of the ancestors is lost when any un#filial descendants fought over the
legacy. )hy not give the legacy to charitable organi/ations? 'y doing so, we leave
behind our humane spirit and wisdom to our future generationsB and the legacy can beused in better ways to benefit the society.
3ost 'uddhists know how to act altruistically when they are alive, but they will
be9ueath their possessions to their descendants. Generally, )esterners will act in the
reverse, they will give their possessions to the society and religious organi/ations.
Some descendants have little knowledge to make the most of their parents legacy to
help the public. However, religious organi/ations will definitely use the money to
beneficial for you to donate generously to your religious organi/ations?

#et attitude remain unchanged in poverty or wealth.
#et honor remain unchanged in politeness or rudeness
#et faith remain unchanged in success or failure.
o the farmers, success means good harvest. o the workers, success means profit
in sales. &n a democratic election, success means being elected and failure means
being defeated. Some people set up their own business and make money while some
work as assistants and help others to profit. &t*s said, $housands of people were
sacrificed when the general is victorious$. he general won because everyone helped
him.
Some people who seem successful might be a failure if we see them from another
perspective. here are also some people who appear to e failures but are actually
successful when things are seen in totality.
For e0ample, (ao (ao was an ambitious prime minister in ancient (hinese
history. He was successful and powerful prime minister because he was in control ofthe king and all the officials. However, his poor record in ethics and loyalty failed him
from a historical point of view. %n the other hand, both )en ian0ing and Shi efa
were defeated as generals and were held captive by their enemies. hough they failed
in the battle field, they were successful because people remembered their loyalty.
Success is not measured in ranking of position, status, knowledge, or even height.
&t is the moral behavior that determines one*s success or failure. (an you -udge that
someone is a failure because he was killed for his righteousness and humanity? (an
you -udge that someone, who is rich and powerful, is successful though detested by
most people? So there*s no absolute success or failure. )hat*s important is the reading
on the scale in relation to our morality.

$almness and peace are the happiest things.

he most tempting power in this world is that of money, se0ual desire, position
and power. et once you have got the money, desire, position and power, are you truly
satisfied?
here are still many people who are happy to lead a humble and virtuous life. &n
fact, most of them have cultivated e0tensively. 8ook at an Hui of the Spring and
!utumn period in ancient (hina. He was contented with his humble life. He was
happy even with only a glass of water, a bowl of food and poor living conditions. an
(hu of the )arring States Period was contented with his humble life, though the king
once offered him a -ob. He said, $& don*t mind simple meals and walking instead of
big feasts and taking rides. & like my humble life.$ ao uanming of Eing +ynasty,
also en-oyed his humble life in the countryside after he had been treated with
disrespect. He wrote in his poem that, $)hen picking the flowers by the fence, & have
a great view of the mountain.$ 3aster Hong i also said that, $Salty has its ownflavor, plain also has its own flavor.$ He also lived humbly but with a virtuous
lifestyle.
here were many writers and elegant gentlemen who embraced the simple
country lifestyle in order to cultivate and live a humble and virtuous life. here were
many powerful officials and ministers who left their government posts -ust to have a
humble and virtuous lifestyle. he simple life freed them from power struggles and
enabled them to do things voluntarily. !t present, we may have better living
conditions and more resources, but we are still not contented. Some people satisfy
desires with material needs and some even willingly to trade their body and soul -ust
for money. !ll these are negative attitudes which reduce one*s morality and raise
discontentment. So we can see the necessity of finding and nurturing humble and
virtuous 9ualities within us. %nly then can we let go of our material desires and return
to our self#nature.
