INTRODUCTION
Dear Readers,
This is a special edition oModern Mercenary. In the past, we have provided updates when new military units have become
available. Though most o these ride the cutting edge, we have seen budget machines in the past, such as the Po and Watchman.
This seasons volume takes things ur ther, to the realm o RetroTech. Originally a term or primitive-style BattleMechs built in
IndustrialMech acilities, RetroTech now encompasses any military design that is manuactured to or based on twenty-th centurydesign standards. In addition, RetroTech may also include Industrial designs purpose-built or combat (as opposed to atermarket
jury-rigs).
With the destruction that has encompassed the Inner Sphere in the past decade and a hal, many militaries are desperate or
any designs they can get their hands on, even RetroTech machines that would normally below the standards o todays major armed
orces. We bring you a sampling o these designs rom across the Sphere. Some are primitive models reborn in the modern age;
others are venerable chasses with modern tweaks. While many o these designs pale in comparison to cutting-edge tech that has
prolierated the modern battleeld, RetroTech designs can augment an existing orce well, and are viable candidates or resource
strapped militias and household guards. Despite what some pilots and crews may say, RetroTech is still better than the alternative
o nothing.
Thank you or your patronage,

INTRODUCTION
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
The Mechs, combat vehicles, an d ghters described in Experimental Technical Readout: RetroTech provide players with a sampling o the
less-expensive (and less eective) primitive (RetroTech) designs that have arisen in due to the widespread damage to the Inner Spheres military-
industrial complex. The designs eatured in this book reect production-level units, some o which are available on the open market, while others
supply specic military orces.
The rules or using Mechs, vehicles and ghters in BattleTech gameplay can be ound in Total Warare, while the rules or their construction c an
be ound in TechManual. However, the unusual nature o these designs also draws upon the Experimental-level rules presented in Tactical Operations
and Primitive-level rules presented in Jihad Secrets: The Blake Documents. Thus, none o the units eatured in this volume are considered tournament
legal, and their use in introductory games is discouraged.

The thought o a Patron LoaderMech charging into combat is
ost laughable. Outside o a desperate reloading actions during
Age o War, the slow, unarmed, and under-armored Patron is
nerally seen as an irrelevant support Mech by todays standards, ere convenience or technicians. Opponents o Tamarind militia
nd the new Patron to be problematic, however. Though its
ed is unchanged, this is not an issue or a Mech designed to
nter and support conventional inantry. At only teen tons,
Patrons strategic movement can be much easier than larger
ts. The Patrons our light machine guns give it some reach to
r into most conventional troops, but i the enemy inantry has
ng enough reach, the Patron should still be cautious because
armor hasnt been improved. Indeed, the most signicant task
the militia Patron is carrying its ve ten-rocket launcher salvos
o the ray. With these, the Patrons supporting inantry can
n a ghting chance against more heavily armored opponents,
h as battle armored troops and light vehicles. A lucky strike
these same rockets can even become a deterrent, scattering
ventional troops beore they even come into eective range
massed re.
The rst sales o the Patron MilitiaMech went to Tamarind
tia orces, but manuacturer Graham-Davis Enterprises quickly
ered the design to anyone who can aord it. GDE expects this
w ret to dramatically increase the tepid sales that ollowed the
erable Patron in the past. Despite the armaments, however,cs say that it seems unlikely that customers will suddenly ock

At irst glance, the Mech is less than impressive, generally
perormed by a century-old Locustor Stinger. Looking into the basis

esser standards, this machine is able to keep up with almost any Lyran
mation larger than a lance, and it carries a very modern ER medium
er or punch, allowing it to hit arther than most vintage designs. But
heart o this Mech isnt its weaponry, but the active probe that enables
Pathfnderto locate enemy units and reveal their locations to its more
werul lancemates. Many o the Pathfnders parts are low-spec, but th e
be is Nashan Diversieds newest combat-ready Beagle series. Not only
viding combat detection, the Beagle can also quickly scan terrain, and

ncies who are wanted by Lyran authorities or those outlawed by the
BC seem to be orbidden to purchase the Pathfnder. Still, the LAAF is
rently the primary buyer or the design, outtting many o their militiaces with the design.
There has been talk at Zettle o producing a version that replaces the

Building a Mech production acility is no mean eat, even or

rian Hegemony, the development o Marian Arms have been
e o the greatest challenges that nation has aced. At rst onlyable o retting existing chasses, now these Mech acilities
e debuted their rst complete manuacture, a local variation on
Centurion. While the choice may seem at rst to be a nod to t he
gemonys neo-Roman style, the act remains that the venerable
turion is a solid Mech, more than capable in its own right.
The Marian version, dubbed the CN9-H, is built to primitive
ndards, likely due to limits on Marian Arms chassis construction
ability at this time. While this makes it more ragile than the
st ancient Centurions in the Inner Sphere today, most Periphery
ndits wont likely stick around to gure that out. Armed with
LB 10-X autocannonlikely imported rom the League or
ancethis Mech has power and range. Its traditional missile
ncher is gone, replaced by nearly a hal dozen ten-tube rocket
nchers. Combined with the speed o a 9-A model, this weapons
d gives the Marian version similar capabilities, but in a real ght,
pretender will soon be exposed by its lack o armor. While
ually similar to Succession Wars standards, the poor quality
terial protecting this machine puts up only hal the ght o
mal armor. This can easily intimidate resource-wary pirates
er to minimize their own damage, but a serious invader acing
e o these Centurions will nd it a glass cannon. On the plus side, orts rom technicians indicate that the primitive components
not require much more maintenance than standard parts today,
repairs may take longer anyway, given the present rarity o
dy parts.
Purchasing one o these machines seems unlikely or the near

other armed orce in the k nown universe, and so Marian Arms
ot selling CN9-Hs on the open market.

New Hessens original RetroTech design, the NH-1 Rook, ound its way
o the open market airly quickly during the Jihad, a success that soon ledhe development o the modernized NH-2 and NH-3X series. However,
esponse to requests rom past customers, New Hessen WorkMechs
prisingly unveiled a new atermarket upgrade available only to the
ginal NH-1 primitive model, the so-named NH-1B Rook-Xpackage.
Giving the Mech a ormidable oensive punch to rival that o the
-2, the NH-1B carries an extended-range PPC and our medium lasers
o which are extended range types. Even the rear acing small lasers
upgraded in this ret, and two more heat sinks have been added to
p with the load. But the biggest shock is the addition o a capacitor or
particle cannon. While using the capacitor pushes the Rook-Xs heat
velope, a solid hit rom this weapon can destroy cockpits on even the
st heavily armored Mechs in a single shot. Like many BattleMechs,
Rook-Xsuers rom heat issues, and plasma weapons or inernos can
ckly take this design out o a ght. But while a lot o ocus is on the
ticle cannon and capacitor, the lasers can make or a heavier, i less
centrated, barrage that will not tax the sinks too much. The two types
orward lasers provide a slightly odd set o range brackets that pilots
need some time to get used to, but competent pilots can master these
rks in short order.
Given the NH-1s sales history, most o the NH-1B upgrades have gone

inst the Capellan Conederation. Though neither exceptionally ragile
overly durable, their increased repower made it hard or the Capellans

With a chassis, engine, and armor manuactured to primitive

he Nike have gone exclusively to the Draconis Combine. Reports rom
eld are good, especially where raiders attempted to strike a DCMS
ms depot on Benjamin. Their air cover was quickly dispatched by a lance
Nikes, which was then pressed into service against the raiders Mechs.
e enemy lance was pelted with autocannon re and orced to take
er, losing valuable time. While none o the Mechs were destroyed, they
eated ater a ew minutes in the ace o incoming DMCS reinorcements.
er than a bandit ghter crashing into a tenement district, the action was
using success or the Nike.

For all their zealotry and poor decision-making, the Word o Blake
s, by no means, stupid. When it became apparent they would soon be
hting a deensive war, they adapted, determined to slow the allies on
ry ront. One example o this was the White Tip command submarine
t on Keid. Based on the idea that i they could make their commandets hard to nd and even harder to kill, they could deny complete victory
heir enemies, stalling any oensive indenitely. The theory, however,
s more sound than the practice.
Like the Barouche, the White Tip is built to modern standards, and
s not RetroTech per se, but as these vessels were actually built to non-
tary specs, they qualiy as armed support vehicles instead. Fusion
wered and submersible, these boats were difcult to nd on worlds
h abundant surace oceans, and carried enough supplies and on-board
enities to last or months away rom port. They were also difcult to kill;
ugh our tons o armor is not a lot o protection, orty long-range and
ht short-rang torpedo tubes gave the White Tips better hitting power
n most o their potential undersea enemies. An extended range laser
s even included or endurance. Medical acilities and sophisticated
mmunications equipment made them even more power ul as strategic
apons, allowing them to work with costal orces to harry the invaders. In
e submarine tradition, only the White Tips ofcers had their own rooms;
sted crew had to share bunk space.
The Coalitions determination on Keid was greater than the Blakists
gined. O the hal dozen White Tip prototypes deployed there, our were
troyed in battle while the other two surrendered when it was apparent
world was lost. Two o the sunken vessels have since been raised anduilt. Despite their ultimate deeat, the White Tip showed great ability as
obile command post or heavily aquatic worlds. Bigoti Seacrat will soon
t oering sales to o-planet customers.

Despite having both quantity and quality in their aerospace manuacturing capability or a nation their size,
Outworlds Alliance know that one can never have too much protection. Having suered rom Omniss and
rd o Blake terrorism in the Jihad, as well as the upheavals surrounding the growing alliance with the Snow
ens, and now a teetering postwar economy, outlying worlds have begun turning to RetroTech or additional
tection and as a means o boosting the slumping markets. Kukk Transportations civilian acilities on Cerberused to meet both needs by producing primitive aerospace ghters.
Using old Terran Hegemony blue prints, Kukk has managed to create a RetroTech version o the venerable
rrowhawk, but with a slight tweak. Oensively, the DH variant is actually a slight upgrade compared to the Star
gue H5 airrame, as its wing-mounted lasers are extended range models. However, the lower-quality engine
d ight controls have produced a crat whose acceleration is slightly reduced and lacks the uel capacity and
tection o the mainstream H5. But with the same bomb load as any other Sparrowhawkand a prole that ools
ny targeting computers into thinking that it is a more advanced model, the DH has become popular amongst
rcenaries and Alliance militia-grade orces alike. Reports o piracy have dropped in the Alliance and while Snow
en activities and cutting-edge planes like the Coraxcan claim much o the credit, lances oSparrowhawks where
e there was nothing have had an eect as well.
The bigger question is where Kukk will go rom here. Producing small passe nger shuttles in the p ast, the
ux o prot rom the sale o these ghters presents a great opportunityas long as they play ball with the
ow Ravens.

Originally a Terran Hegemony design, the Star Daggerwas sold to the Draconis Combine in the early twenty-
rth century when the Hegemony upgraded its aerospace eet. Despite the sub-optimal perormance o the
ign, its inexpensive nature enabled it linger as the Combines premier light ghter until the introduction o th e
re centuries later. (The introduction o the Sholagarin the twenty-ninth century nished o the original Star
ggers career.) With the destruction o the Jihad, most governments were hungry or any units capable o llingholes in their rosterand that included Periphery governments like the Calderon Protectorate.
The Protectorate Deense Conglomerate (ormerly the Concordat Deense Conglomerate) took advantage
he rising demand or aerospace assets by bringing back this an cient crat or general sale, with hal o th e runs
ng to reinorce the Protectorate military. The PDC do n ot seem terribly concerned with who purchases the Star
gger; background checks are minimal as long as the transer clears. Indeed, the return o the Star Daggeris likely
a stepping-stone in the Protectorates plans to build up their military industrial complex, with prots rom all
es o this ghter used to expand the companys production capability.
The Star Dagger itsel is unremarkable at best; slow or its engine weight and lightly armed, it is mainly
ed at discouraging raiders with massed strang runs. The dual machine guns are much more eective against
ventional inantry, while the lasers and armor will only threaten the weakest o opponents. The Star Dagger
es have more uel than many modern ghters, however. This gives it plenty o range or patrol, and thus can
end a worlds detection radius should these crat encounter interlopers built or combat.

As the Free Worlds League has grown more and more unstable, each state has needed to grow more sel-
fcient or its own protection. The Mosiro Archipelago realized this and began research into what their deenses
eded the most, concluding that a st rong aerospace orce was their best and most economical line o deensem hostile agencies. Lacking the inrastructure to support a top-o-the-line actory proved impossible, so the
ro-state instead commissioned the Bagamoyo Aerospace Manuacturing acility on Mosiro. Capable only o
ding primitive-quality airrames and engines, Bagamoyo built with those limitations in mind, using advanced
aponry that would not tax the capabilities o their new ghters.
Structurally, the BAM-1A1 Malaika appears based on the Banshee, an abandoned Lyran test bed rom the
n Invasion era, but the similarities are only supercial. A pair o ve-tube multi-missile launchers provides
ecent pop at long ranges while allowing a bigger punch up close, while dual Artemis IV targeting systems
rease these missiles accuracy without putting another ghter at risk. An extended range small laser brings
the rearliterallybut will not impact the Malaikas cooling system greatly. The biggest weak point or the
aika is its skin. Despite having over twenty percent o its mass devoted to armor, the low-quality manuacturing
vides the protection o ghters hal its size. Additionally, the ghter is something o a maintenance nightmare,
h components and access ports inconveniently scattered throughout the crat in such a way that has stymied
n veteran technicians unprepared or its unique needs.
So ar, the Malaika is only available or sale to the Mosiro Deense Bureau, but external sales could start in
next ew years.
