Technical Description Automatic Slab Tong
The Heppenstall Automatic Slab Tong incorporates many design features gained from the knowledge of designing and supplying steel handling equipment for the past 100 years. Heppenstall maintains an ongoing research and development program investigating new and better methods of handling steel coils and evaluating the use of the latest technology advancements in materials for the manufacture of material handling equipment.
1 Introduction This type of tong is made for lifting slabs in a horizontal position. The tongs are robustly engineered for heavy duty application to meet the severe demands of steel mills. The crane operator controls the lifting process of this tong by placing the tong above the center of the slabs (see drawing in Operation Istructions). The hook mechanism consists of a cast iron housing with a firm latch pin and it is engineered to mesh with a catch thus allowing the tong to open and close. Easily accessible grease nipples are provided for all bearings. The gripping pads or shoes can be easily removed when required for maintenance, repairing or replacing.
2 Material The main levers are manufactured of high tensile steel with the following mechanical characteristics: • Yield point 70 kg/mm2 min. • Tensile strength 80 - 95 kg/mm2 min. • Expansion using a 50 mm long test sample 18 % min. Throughout alternating stress tests we have found that the steel we use has proven itself to be of excellent quality and is extremely age resistant. Furthermore, using high tensile steel keeps the weight of the tong to a minimum. All pins, incl. the latch pin are manufactured of 42CrMo4-V, material no. 1.7225 (DIN), SAE 410. All welding is performed and metallurgical supervised by experienced welders. All welded parts are subsequently heat treated. The gripping shoes are made of Heppenstall alloyed hot work steel and can be easily exchanged during a maintenance check. Material specifications are noncommittal guidelines and therefore not binding. Design details may be changed without notification.
2.1 Acceptance Testes All components subjected to high stress are examined for possible surface cracks using the "MAGNAFLUX" method. To check for incitements we use ultrasonic test equipment. Chemical and mechanical test certificates may be provided on request - at extra charge.

3 Suspension The steel plate suspension is designed to fit a single crane hook. A different suspension may be provided upon special request. 4 Safety Factor HEPPENSTALL-EUROPE tongs are available in various industrial classes. The safety factors of these classes are determined according to our many years of experience in the field of industrial handling equipment. Regarding frequency of load and weight limit, our classification corresponds with approximately the following classes according to FEM (Fédération Européenne de la Manutention, Section I, Cranes and Heavy Duty Handling Equipment, 3rd edition 10.011987) respectively DIN 15018 (April edition 1974).
HEPPENSTALL-EUROPE Class 4 corresponds to FEM E4 - E5 HEPPENSTALL-EUROPE Class 5 corresponds to FEM E6 HEPPENSTALL-EUROPE Class 6 corresponds to FEM E7 - E8
5 Special Specifications 5.1 The Manufacturing of Bushings
5.1.1 Material Specification The selected material for HEPPENSTALL bushings correspond to DIN 1.7131 (16MnCr5) with the following composition: C 0,14 - 0,19 % Mn 1,1 - 1,4 % Si 0,17 - 0,37 % Cr 0,8 - 1,1 % P max. 0,035 S max. 0,035
5.1.2 Heat Treatment The material has been selected carefully for cementation heat treatment. This results in the following properties:
• The surface hardens to about 60HRC and to a depth of 0,5 mm. • The core maintains the material characteristics.
The pieces are dipped into a special cyanide salt solution. After several hours of being exposed to temperatures between 860°C - 900°C they are red-hot, and the hardening of the surface takes place through a chemical reaction. The bushings are resistant to the following temperatures: Ac1 = 740 °C Ac2 = 840 °C (Ms = 300 °C) For lubrication we recommend:
All tongs fitted with 2 main bolts connected to the lower rail (outer turning point), instead of the central turning point, will be equipped with an equalizing lever. This configuration will ensure a well balanced closing of the main lever during the gripping motion.
2 outer turning points 1 central turning point
A balanced closing of the main lever or shoe can not be guaranteed without this equalizing lever. An uneven grip would be the result if the shoes are not on the same level (as shown in the drawing below). One side would grip more slabs then the other, and the tong would loose the load.

Commissioning of an Automatic Slab Tong
All operations may only be performed by qualified personnel.
1 Mechanic • All packaging material must be removed after transportation. Make sure that none of the
material could inhibit parts of the mechanical function. • Did all of the parts for the lifting equipment arrive or did some get lost during the transport? • Are all the guides clean and lubricated? • The gears oil level need to be checked and if necessary refilled. • Have all the axes and bolts been tightened? • All screws should be tightened according to the plan and service instructions. • Will the crane installation meet all the requirements of the lifting equipment?
2 Fastening of the Lifting Equipment to the Crane Installation • The connection of the lifting equipment to the crane should take place after it was first
assembled on the ground. • The crane hook will then be brought down to the level of the lifting equipment’s suspension. • Manually it will be put into the suspension. • Check whether the hook is securely fastened in the suspension and is of adequate size. • Check that the lock of the hook is fastened.
3 Control • The lifting equipment is being operated from the crane, on which the tong is attached. • The crane operator should be well acquainted with the operational procedures. • The safety of our products depends highly upon the surroundings that are provided for
them.
4 Importante Note for Crane Operator • To avoid any accidents, it is of utmost importance that the crane operator will handle the
equipment away from people. Provide designated restricted areas if possible. • No one is allowed under the crane while in operation. • People need to be warned ahead of time, when the crane will be moving over a work area
or over passage ways. • The crane operator must receive instructions from the ground personnel in case of a
blocked vision. • The crane operator is not allowed to leave the crane as long as the equipment is in
operation. • It is forbidden to turn a load while driving toward an obstacle. • It is prohibited to lower cargo or lifting equipment which is swinging. • The ground personnel must stay away from a swinging load.
After all the steps mentioned above have been successfully carried out,
the lifting equipment is ready to go into operation.

Operation Instructions
1 Slab Loading
The tong is at open position and is placed ~30cm directly over the load. Use reduced speed to lower tong onto the slab Aut. handling 1-5m/min Manual handling 1-3m/min
The crane operator needs to ease the cable of the crane. This will activate the coupling. The lifting process can begin.
During the lifting process, speed max. 5m/min, the main frame closes and the levers grip the load secure.
Due to a mechanical gripping force the load is held tightly until it is ready to be set down again.
Never lift a slab violently off the ground !
2 Slab Unloading Unloading the slab is simply the inverse from loading operation.
T-5768 SABIC - Hadeed page 9 of 11
Overload Test Normally the static and dynamic overload test is carried out by the customer while the inspection of the respective country (e.g. TÜV) is in attendance.
1 Preparations prior to Testing • The surface of the slab must be clean. The slab itself parallel.
• The person in charge of the test should make sure that the tong is situated right above the load so that the gripping shoes have a simultaneous and even grip.
2 Testing • Lift the tong carefully with the maximum weight limit.
• Check for correct gripping and horizontal position prior to adding an additional weight for the static and dynamic test.
• The additional load must be added in such way that the tong will hang in a horizontal position during the entire testing period.
3 After the Test All screws must be checked and tightened since they may have become loose during the test. Tight screws acording to Maintenace Instructions, Monthly Ispection, Screws and Nuts.
HEPPENSTALL Will refuse any kind of liability should this overload test not have been carried out properly.

T-5768 SABIC - Hadeed page 11 of 11
Attention! All tongs handling high temperature products such as ingots, slabs etc. have to be checked periodically as to the deterioration of structural steel parts. The main levers are manufactured of high-strength fine grain structural steel AS USS-T1., Superelso etc. which up to 200°C is primarily a non-aging material. When the material approaches temperatures in the annealing range of 500°C a change in the physical characteristic may occur (lower impact value, expansion, contraction etc.)
Conclusions When a test reveals that the material of the levers or beams have become brittle, the tong has to be taken out of service. In such a case, we recommend that you contact our customer service department for a general overhaul. It may be possible, that by using a special heat treatment the material can be returned to it’s original physical conditions.
Please use only original HEPPENSTALL spare parts for all repairs.
Attention! IT IS FORBIDDEN TO MAKE ANY CHANGES ON THE LIFTING EQUIPMENT WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE MANUFACTURER. SUCH ACTION WOULD DEFINITELY JEOPARDIZE THE SAFETY OF THE INSTALLATION.
