The site Layout:

People will enter from this entrance when

they want to directly access to the garden.

They will use that entrance maily when

there are open days or something to

display in the shops. The entrance is from

side road.

The main entrance is from the main road ( 90

street). There will be a parking area and a

fountain as you enter. You could pass by the

admin to enter the orphanage or you could

enter it directly from the side door.

There will be pergola and a sitting

area in which children can sit with

each other, socialize, study, and

enjoy the beautiful view and the

beautiful weather.

The three shops will be in the garden

and children are going to sell what they

do and gain money

Statement of Purpose:

My purpose is to have an orphanage which reflects what family means. In that orphanage there will be small families. The life with the family is very important it plays a major role in their development into the person

they become. Family, in its meaning is shelter from life; family consists of two parents, father and a mother, so when in designing my orphanage I cannot miss the image of the father and his importance. In addition,

the father's role in a family is to love, protect, support, teach, and to be responsible so I cannot deny his role in the orphanage. Moreover, the presence of outlets is an important element in the orphanage. This will

enhance their selling skills and a skill that will help them in their later life such as handcrafts.

Design Objective:

The purpose of my design is to create a safe, secure, and warm environment where the children will feel as if they are in their main homes. The whole atmosphere of the place will create a sense of belonging,

companionship and engagement between the children. I believe that the home itself has to send a clear message to everyone who sees it. I want the children to feel the sense of belonging with their home and their

rooms. For example, in the Dar el Hana Wel Hanady orphanage that I went to in my field trip, I found that they are putting every girl’s photo on the back wall of her bed. The privacy could also be achieved by putting

every child in a separate bed and not more than one on a bed.

Design Concept:

- Simplicity: the children are simple so I will design a simple house to let them feel safe.

- Comfort: every space in the house should fulfill comfort, privacy and relaxation Putting small windows in rooms or spaces where privacy is needed, in a place facing neighbors Using glass from ground to ceiling (large glass window) in areas where the garden is the view.

- Spacious and circulation: Circulation it is a very important factor that I have to put into my consideration when designing my orphanage. In an orphanage guests are always coming in and out so there must

be enough space for circulation. The guest room and the reception should be wide and big enough for a 3 families consists of father and mother and 6 children to live in, practicing activities and receiving

guests.

- Division of space: the ground floor of the house considers a public section where privacy in circulation is not really needed as this floor is open for everyone to come in and visit the children

(guests). The ground floor is mainly divided into two parts: part for the administration and the other part is the dining room, reception, 2 multipurpose rooms, one for children and the other for older

sisters and brothers. However, as you move up in the floor, there is more privacy. The first floor is for older boys, the second floor is for mixed kids, the third floor where more privacy is in for girls.

- Ventilation and lighting: the building will depend more on natural ventilation and natural lighting to allow maximum view of the garden. In some places we need maximum light to enter; for

example, studying rooms. On the other hand, there are some places where we minimize the light in; for example, bedrooms. Children always want to see the day light to feel optimistic and that every

day is full of hope and light.

Page 13: 351 final

- Safety: there will be high fences to save the children from any danger.

I would like the building to be compact and not spread in the land is to let the children feel safe and warm because if it is a spread in large place children will feel that they are lost in a big house. I also believe to design

a simple building which will be similar to what they are going to leave in after they leave the institution. The reason why I choose the adult girls to be in the third floor is to achieve the highest level of privacy. No one

can go up so girls will feel comfortable and to achieve privacy. Having the young children in the middle of the 2 adults is to gain care from both boys and girls.

Concept

The building will be darker as you go up, this means that as you go up the place becomes more private. In addition, I like the whole building not to be build on the same area. The area changes from floor to another.

to build the institution in new Cairo because: dI decide

New Cairo is the coming future.

A certain standard will visit the institution.

Up till now there is no orphanage in new Cairo.

It is a suitable place to build a modern building with garden.

Easily to achieve privacy, the homes are not very near to each other.

Constraints:

Building in a dessert is not very convenient, children will somehow feel isolated. On the other hand, after 2 years maximum new Cairo will be the future and it will be crowded by people and the children will feel the

community around them. They have the right to live in a place where the future is the key.

Page 16: 351 final

The first study model:

My concept was to have the ground level an empty space made of cermic for children to play in. this floor is going to be a slab only so as to function as an indoor playing space.

On the upper floors there are goint to be the clusters in which they sleep and study. These clusters are divided into two spaces; space where they study and the other one is a serving garden.

playing space)

study and socialize The garden of this

This is going to be the

attention since this is the

theme of my project.

Comments:

1-The building is compacted on the land.

2-There Is no link between the admin and the clusters.

3- some changes in the plans

Page 18: 351 final

Second Studing Model:

In the second model I did the connection between the clusters and the admin, MPU. I tried to define more the entance and introducing the main and the side raods.

In the class after dicussing the model, the Dr and the TA decided to open the building so that it would not be over each other. Consequetly, I worked on it in class and it became like that:

Page 19: 351 final

comments:

clusters need to be brought closer together while indicating direction of preferred orientation, paths and passages should be drawn on layout; all non residential buildings should be connected in one cluster. Layout needs a lot of

adjustments; plans scale 1:100

Third model:

I did the connections between theempu to the clusters. I organized the building so that a core would be inside between the 3 main clusters. I worked more on the layout and the passages. I indicated the shaded devices and the

columns that would be in the entance.

Page 20: 351 final

Fourth Studying Model:

According to the Dr,’s advice, she told me to separate the clusters from each other. The clusters are not of the same height. The babies cluster is on the 0 level , the boys’s cluster is 1.5 higher than the first and the girl’s cluster is 6 m

high since this more needs more privacy than any cluster, so as you move from down to up the place becomes more private.
