PRESENTATION

What we are going to tell you about is not just the simple, classical story of a company.

It’s the story of lots of small men and women who together, step by step, smiles after tears, joy after pain, glory after hard work have created what is now the STORY of the daily life of a small or medium sized business through strength of union, hard work, devotion and know-how. And business it is, not just considering its corporate name

but for the number of successes and acknowledgements had over its 35 year-long HISTORY.

“Thus man, that very being with his fragility, old age, darkness and death, has no borders, is atopos, literally of no place, as he himself is the world’s border and limit; his knowledge is that place linking all things”.

Man is the unit measuring all things as he is limit, threshold, frontier across which contraries travel in their conflict.

THE TIME MACHINE A PAST, A PRESENT, A FUTURE

Everything started in the distant 70’ s;

The economy grew to such an extent that it led to talk of a real economic miracle; Italy went from a farming to an industrial country;

with really important results especially in the iron and steel and automobile production sectors, while average per capita income multiplied and unemployment was just about zero.

PARMA TREASURES a route through art and taste

We’re in Parma, ancient Emilana “Land”, a small town with a strong art, music, good food background; and the must of values, sacred principles, faithful promises are the absolute protagonist.

Parma town is split in two by the famous torrent “la Parma”.

To the right of the river its historical centre, to the left hills and rural suburbs.

The traditional Parma countryside gastronomic treasures, going from Zibello to Busseto, from Colorno to Fontanellato, from Soragna to San Secondo, lead you to dressed pork factories, wine cellars, parmesan producers and local trattorias.

Along with being able to admire unique noble family homes: from the Colorno palace to the Rocche of Fontanellato.

You’re enveloped by that magical climate of those small towns, famous as the birthplaces of great figures of Italian culture: Giuseppe Verdi and Giovanni Guareschi.

The “Parma ham and wine Route” safeguards the goodness of famous local specialities, while the other protagonist is Parmigiano Reggiano, matured using techniques that are almost a thousand years old, needing no further presentation.

THE THREE “B”

So let’s dive back into the past and, more specifically, 1973, in a remote, silent street in Parma’s historical centre .

Via Doberdò, 53 to meet a man like many others, worker, lathe turner, technician; a man who has turned his personal experience into the

knowledge and study of a life time from generation to generation;

Vittorio Bertoli created a small team of 4 to “repair and build mechanical bodies and pneumatic equipment”, a company which still bears his name with pride and esteem; the BERTOLI ENTERPRISE.

VITTORIO BERTOLI

Was born in Parma in 1938.He studied at the technical school “Vittorio Bottego” (Now “Marconi Secondary School”) and worked as a technician for “Tanara gelati” for several years.

Vittorio built his first machine in 1973; a two piston homogenizer 500 l/h at 150 bar for the Sordi company.

In 1974, the firm moved from Via Doberdò to Via Lasagna where Bertoli decided to take on and study homogenizers more thoroughly.

Page 28: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

From the 70’ s to the 90’ s

In 1977 Vittorio Bertoli took part in the first MILC trade fair in Parma, held in the prestigious Ducale Park at the time.

In1980, they built the first aseptic homogenizer and sold it to Parmalat to produce Chef cream.

(The aseptic version homogenizer is still considered added value for Bertoli, thanks especially to the use of sterile water condensation).

We were still in 1980 when the first two piston pumps were supplied to Rossi & Catelli.

That was the start of what was to become an ongoing collaboration with Rossi e Catelli, thanks to an important supply of large homogenizers going to a large dairy in Lagos, Nigeria.

And still in 1980 we must not forget the experimental supply of a

homogenizer to Parmovo, a Barilla spa supplier.

It was when tomato concentrate factories started to modernise equipping themselves with sterilisation and aseptic filling plants.

It was in this period, with UHT milk production plants evolving so fast, that the importance of aseptic homogenizers emerged.

Page 42: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

Bertoli began to experiment more not just on studying and designing homogenizers but also on piston pumps, gaining more and more experience.

For this reason, based on demanding market needs, Bertoli created a new patented pump to channel products containing solid pieces, not to be damaged during treatment, into the sterilizers.

This pump, the XP150, was a great success, becoming more and more present in the main international companies.

We must not forget that one of these pumps was supplied to process esteemed Barilla sauces.

From that moment onwards, Bertoli really started to grow; hard and tiring, but decidedly deserved growth.

Research and technological development allowed BERTOLI to consolidate its presence on the global market supplying pumps and homogenizers to leading companies in the food, chemical, petrol-chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors.

In those years production exceeded 800 units.

45

Page 46: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

From the 90’ s to 2007THE START OF A NEW ERA

Rossi & Catelli became more and more important for the Bertoli turnover.

To such an extent that the R&C President, ROBERTO CATELLI decided to buy the company in the 90’ s.

BERTOLI moved to bigger premises in Vicofertile (PR) in Via Martiri della Liberazione.

Thus the start of an important growth, innovation and competitiveness plan for BERTOLI; a plan that was to consolidate its international success and make it one of the sector’s most important companies.

Know how acquired over the years supplying homogenizers and pumps to companies operating in highly different sectors and research and development department activities, complete with its own laboratory, assured ongoing machine improvement in choice and application of materials, their characteristics, quality, reliability and performance.

Important improvements occurred in that decade and the Bertoli model range increased along with production, offices and personnel; thus guaranteeing more reliability and safety in the work place.

More than 2000 machines were produced in 2000 and, to improve internal organisation, Bertoli implemented a new computer system integrating all company departments.

That is when Bertoli attained ISO 9001 certification, to guarantee, through ongoing control by a certifying body, respect of all procedures needed to create a really high quality product.

62

Page 63: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

During that period, MAURO BIANCHI was General Manager of Bertoli.

In 2007, when production exceeded 2500 units, Bertoli moved to its new offices in S.POLO di TORRILE (PR), big enough for its continuing growth and increase in sales.

In 2008, Bertoli attained UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 (ISO14001:2004) standard Voluntary environmental certification.

Activities required for that goal were, initially, assessing company conformity to environmental laws and relative adjustment; then a second stage implementing the management system through

which the company guarantees full respect of environmental legislation attaining ISO 14001:2004 certification with Det Norske Veritas (DNV), certificate n°3345-2008-AE-ITA-SINCERIT.

Page 70: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

70

Page 71: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

Implementation of a work safety management system, the so-called “Mitigating System” approved by INAIL and Confindustria, started at the end of February 2008.

The system includes several procedures, accompanied by forms, adopting specific rules, assigning roles and formalising all management aspects.

Pictures of the experimental Bertoli laboratory

Bertoli considers 2008 a turning point; in fact, it achieved the highest turnover in company history.

To implement technological innovation in a structural manner, Bertoli created a dedicated “Research & Development” department enabling it to guarantee more rigorous and accurate control of machines manufactured and check results obtained in the various homogenization process conditions.

71

And that’s not all; in that period Bertoli deposited 3 new patents and commited itself heavily to re-designing and renewing its machine range.

At the start of 2009, BVQI carried out its periodical maintenance.

On that occasion, besides checking progress in the effectiveness of the Company Quality System, they also verified conformity to the new standard ISO 9001:2008, which came into force in November 2008.

Bertoli.srl demonstrated that it could meet said requirements and is now certified by this new standard.

The photo shows Stefano Calò, Bertoli Information Systems Manager, during the SMAU award ceremony at the Bologna Trade Fair

Furthermore, during 2009 the company Quality System will be implemented into the management system (CRM) thus making it easier to fill in documents and making the Quality tool more and more effective.

Improvements resulting from the entire management system being computerised and consequent innovation of business using ICT technologies won Bertoli the much coveted SMAU award.

79

Page 80: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

The company production process has always been based on designing parts internally, outsourcing their production and then assembling machines internally.

After long, accurate control of the situation, two highly negative factors emerged which hold back company growth: cost and lead time.

S. POLO DI TORRILE, new “Bertoli Tools” plant. 2009

THE TURNING POINT “BERTOLI TOOLS”

These two critical aspects, for the company improvement plan, led to a decision to integrate the company’s manufacturing area with a “mechanical processing” area; to produce all strategic parts needed to make the machines and have absolute control of their quality level.

Page 81: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

BERTOLI TOOLS81

Page 82: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

This is what the present Managing Director, Mr. Alessio Lazzari, said:

“The industrial plan developed is of strategic importance for Bertoli and differential economic analysis results show that it could become a lever for company competitiveness in the near future.

We operate in a niche market where company margin cannot be based on de-localising production units as total time needed to assemble machines is limited, as is the cost compared to that of materials and processing…”

These thoughts led to the creation of a new machine tool production department: the new “Bertoli Tools” plant in Via Cassola n°7.

82

Page 83: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

Thirty years on the international market is the Bertoli strong point; besides being leader in designing and building homogenizers and piston pumps, it is also a leader in both technological-innovative and economic-social experience

Bertoli is not just a solid, compact business based on ongoing research into innovation, technology, continuous improvement; it is also a large family with people collaborating daily- for over thirty years- towards a single goal:

To progress and aspire to better living conditions.

CHRISTMAS 1995

And like every good family, the “Bertoli Family” enjoys fun moments spent together, happy moments not to be forgotten in the company’s historic and photographic memory, like the classical “Christmas” dinner.

“There are many immense things, but nothing is more immense than man:

He crosses the hoary sea and advances with stormy Noto, moving in the waves piling up around him, and on the sublime Earth amongst gods, eternal and untiring, he works, ploughing year by year and turning it with a generation of horses.

And that carefree race of birds and the parentage of those proud wild ones and sea creatures of the waves in the snares of his nets does man with his ingenuity envelop and snare.

He wins rustic animals wondering over mountains with his traps and yokes the horse with its thick mane, and the untiring mountain bull too.

And word and thought as fast as the wind and the thrust to civil systems learnt alone; like fleeing inhospitable frost and the sky rich in resources with its heavy rains.

And never without resources does he move towards future events.

Only from Hades can he not flee even though he has escaped from incurable disease.

Possessing beyond any hope, science, knowledge and arts, at times moving towards evil, at times towards good. If he respects the laws of his land and the sworn justice of the gods, he elevates his town.

Without homeland is the person who, out of brazen derring-do, combines with evil: whoever behaves like that does not live in my house, whoever has no thought that can contradict him to a minimum extent”.

“...That ideal, not civil, not descriptive, not decorative but which flows from the heart of things and is a real, true lyrical sensation and impression.”

G. PASCOLI

This book is dedicated to all those who belong to the historical-cultural memory and socio-economic but, above all, human and civil, working life of Bertoli.

A memory, project, dedication to experience, studies, daily commitment of men and women who have taken, and still take, Bertoli to industry’s global market peaks for the design and manufacture of high pressure homogenizers and piston pumps.

General Managers, managers, employees, collaborators, customers and suppliers; all united by hard market and global industry laws, all competitive and competitors for their product and all friends-enemies in a fierce society. And an entrepreneurial wheel where the univocal goal of modern industrialisation crystallizes into corporate capital, research’s technological progress, respect for quality and the environment, is placed at the centre of that meeting between “demand” and “offer”

121

Page 122: 35 YEARS HISTORY, AND MACHINES AND PEOPLE

We would like to thank Mr. Alessio Lazzari, Managing Director of Bertoli srl since December 2007, for publication of this book.

He really wanted to give the company a historical touch, to remember each single person who contributed to creating the Bertoli project, not just industrialisation and technological innovation.
