THANKSGIVING DAY: Please join all the children of St. Matthews for a Eucharistic Celebration 9am Mass Thanksgiving Morning Before we all gather at the table in our homes, let us gather at the table of the Lord, the altar in St. Matthew Church. As a Communion Meditation the children will lead us in Grace through song and prayer. One of the earliest lessons we learn as children is to say please and thank you! The root to generosity is gratitude…we share because we believe we are blessed. Jesus says “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” “Whoever then humbles himself as a child, he is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven” Mt. 18:3-4 ST. Daniel 12:1-3 Psalm 16 Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 Mark 13:24-32
We consider great literature to be works that treat the universal experiences of human beings - experiences that are common, in some degree, to all people. Such experiences might be, for example, the mother-child relationship, or the relationship between father and child, or between siblings. The stages of life – infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age – have been the subject of many books, poems, movies, and plays over the ages. Another universal experience, perhaps the most significant of all, is, of course, death. Since the Bible is recognized as the greatest literature of all time, we would be surprised and disappointed if the Bible did not contribute to the literature about these universal experiences. In fact, we find much material about dying and being prepared for death in the Hebrew Scriptures, the gospels, and the epistles. Often death is included with other concerns like the end of the world and final judgment – both personal and universal. There is one crucial difference between the way the Bible treats the subjects of the end of the world and final judgment and the way the tabloid press treats them. The Bible never gets specific about when these events will occur. The four last things – death, judgment, heaven, hell – are given the scary sounding name of eschatology. Though the name is frightening, the purpose of the Scriptures in bringing them to our attention is not to scare us. The purpose is rather to alert us to their inevitability. The unpardonable sin that we are warned against is to ignore the reality of death and judgment or, even worse, to deny them. What is the proper faith response to these messages about death and judgment that we hear at the end of the liturgical year? In that wonderful book, Tuesdays with Morrie, the dying man says to his former student, Mitch, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live. I’m going to say it again. Once you learn how to die you learn how to live. Everybody knows they are going to die, but nobody believes it. Most of us walk
around as if we’re sleepwalking. We really don’t experience the world fully, because we’re half asleep, doing things we automatically think we have to do. Facing death changes all of that. You strip away all that stuff and you focus on the essentials. When you realize you are going to die, you see everything differently.” This is the main point behind the church’s bringing up these eschatological topics every year - to remind us again to focus on the essentials in life. Ask ourselves what is really important in this life. Our relationships with others are the most important experiences in this life. Nothing determines the quality of our life here as much as the quality of our relationships with others. Yet we so often take them for granted, putting little effort in nurturing them, improving them, enjoying them. Of course, the religious person doesn’t neglect one’s relationship with God, which also needs to be nurtured and treasured, not taken for granted. Jesus also brings to our attention another relationship – our relationship to nature. At first, it seems odd that when discussing such cosmic ideas as the end of the world and final judgment Jesus should direct our attention to trees. Jesus tells us to look at the trees. Jesus felt a kinship with trees, because they can teach us something. There is nothing more ordinary than a tree, but we can see eternity in a tree. It is clear that Jesus wants us to be aware of trees and what they can teach us. Even if we live in an urban environment, trees are still part of our neighborhood and we probably pass by them several times a day. Jesus wants us to make this experience a rewarding one. The next time you pass a tree, try to imagine what lesson Jesus wants you to learn from it. As Alice Walker put it, “Don’t you know that trees do everything to get our attention but talk?”
