Mission of the Month - Lutheran School of Theology The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, a
seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA), forms visionary leaders to bear
witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.
LSTC graduates are grounded in the Lutheran
tradition and informed by ecumenical and inter-
faith relationships. They are able to respond to
the diversity and changing dynamics of contem-
porary life. They knowledgeably interpret the
Scriptures and the ecumenical traditions of the
church; witness to the reconciling Word of God
through their lives and their ministries of ser-
vice, teaching, preaching, administering the sac-
raments and inviting people to the Christian
faith. They care for God’s people and God’s cre-
ation, revitalizing the church as it seeks to trans-
form the world.
LSTC strives to offer a community and academic
experience that is grounded in the good news of
the gospel and shaped by our urban, multicul-
tural, ecumenical, global, interfaith and universi-
ty-related context and commitments.
Our primary mission is to prepare women and
men for a complex, pluralistic world in need of
faithful and courageous ministers to serve in a
variety of contexts. Although a large percentage
of students come to LSTC to prepare for or-
dained or lay rostered ministries in the Evangeli-
cal Lutheran Church in America, LSTC is also
enriched and transformed by ecumenical and
interfaith students in our various master's and
doctoral programs, as well as ecumenical and
interfaith colleagues.
As a Reconciling in Christ seminary, LSTC seeks
to offer hospitality and welcome to all who enter
LSTC's academic programs. Following Jesus
Christ, whose reconciling love bridged barriers
and made strangers friends, we seek to welcome
and learn from one another's particularity-
including but not limited to one another's race,

national or ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual

LSTC is always becoming a reconciling commu-
nity. Reconciliation is an ongoing activity and
effort that we do together.

Our New Library We are so grateful for all of the donations to help
furnish our new Youth & Family Wing and the
New Administrative Offices. We now are in the
process of bringing our Library up to date and ask
that you consider donating to this cause.
Book of the Month: Rev. Dr. Herbert Chilstrom was
the first presiding bishop of the
ELCA. His autobiography “A
Journey of Grace” describes the
Background to the formation of
our church and the challenges it
faced as a new church. Since we
are celebrating the 25th anniver-
sary of the ELCA, this book provides a wonderful
context for our celebration.
This book is available in the church library.
Book Donations
We want to thank the following people for these
most recent donations to the church library:
Carol Suomu: “The Christian Traveler
Nancy Inskeep: “Swallowing the Golden

Family Ministry wing. Bernie's Book Bank is
located in Lake Forest and is responsible for
the collection and distribution of reading
materials to at-risk youth in Lake and Cook
counties. Each child receives 12 age-
appropriate books each school year, helping
them create at-home libraries.
Look forward to...

“GLOBAL COOLING”
Planting Kindness in a
Challenging World
By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against
such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the
Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing
against one another,
envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26
In his book, “The Power of Kindness,” Italian
psychotherapist, Dr. Piero Ferrucci describes the
pace of living today as a kind of “global cooling.”
He states that the impact of new technologies has
made communications hurried and impersonal;
with the drive for profit overriding the heart.
While Dr. Ferrucci is convinced we are going
through an “ice age of the heart,” he offers a
simple solution: kindness!
Dr. Ferrucci states that kindness is a central factor
in our lives: it can help guide us through a cold
world that is marked by an epidemic of
depression and loneliness. He tells us that
“kindness has surprising power to transform us,
perhaps more than any other attitude or
technique.”
Dr. Ferrucci is the nephew of Aldous Huxley, the
great English writer and a pioneer in the study of
philosophies and techniques aimed at
developing human potential. Huxley, toward
the end of his life, said in a lecture, “People often
ask me what is the most effective technique for
transforming their life. It is a little embarrassing
that after years and years of research and
experimentation, I have to say that the best
answer is—just be a little kinder.”
In his book Dr. Ferrucci demonstrates that if we
foster basic human qualities such as kindness
and compassion, our lives will become more
meaningful, happier, and more peaceful. By
loving one another, we can make a positive
contribution to the world around us. Now isn’t
that what Jesus is teaching us?
Kindness, one of the fruits of the Spirit, must
never be underestimated. By treating others
with kindness, we open the doors and our hearts to
others, becoming a part of each other’s lives.*
Let us be faithful and loving to one another,
Jill Shepherd
