DIALECTICAL JOURNAL GUIDELINES

WHAT IS A DIALECTICAL JOURNAL? “Dialectical” means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of

local arguments”. Therefore, it is a space used to arrive at the “truth” of a text through written responses to quotation. It is a conversation between a quote you find in the text and your ideas about it. PURPOSE

Dialectical Journals give you the opportunity to choose passages and respond to them in a meaningful way. CHOOSING A PASSAGE

Choose a quote that jumps off the page for you. You can use narration or dialogue. You are not limited to what the characters say. Consider passages that:

You really like or are particularly meaningful to you Are significant to the text as a whole You want to comment on, argue with, or question Demonstrate effective and/or creative use of stylistic or literary devices Connect a different text or to the world Represent writing you have a question about or truly like Show you something new about the world

GRADING/GUIDELINES

I am interested in the depth of your response. Your goal is to address all three level questions in a neatly written, organized, and intelligent response.

Each journal is worth 20 points each. There will be 5 dialectical journals due throughout the unit. Assignments that are completed late will be lose points and they will not be accepted 5 days after the due date. There is a rubric attached for guidelines. DUE DATES

Your responses should be typed and uploaded to TurnItIn.com by 11:59pm on the due date. The template for the Dialectical Journal is available on my website. Journal #1—Ch. 1-4 Journal #2—Ch. 5-8 Journal #3—Ch. 9-12 Journal #4—Ch. 13-16 Journal #5—Ch. 17-Epilogue

DIALECTICAL JOURNAL RUBRIC

Analytical Reader

You go below the surface of the text, creating elaborate

and insightful responses

Thoughtful Reader

You have some analysis, but have further to explore.

Literal Reader

You tend to provide simple, factual responses with little

analysis.

Quotation Quote allows for deep, meaningful analysis.

Appropriate length Quote is properly cited

with author & page number.

Quote is interesting and offers a lot to discuss.

Quote is too long/short.

Good attempt at citation, but it is incorrect.

Quote is underdeveloped or not relevant

Citation is missing.

Level 1 You clearly explain the context of the quote.

It is clear why you chose this quote.

The level one details (who, what, where, etc) are very accurate and clearly written.

You begin to explain the context of the quote but it is vague.

You begin to explain the level one facts of this quote but could elaborate more.

You do not include relevant information about the context of the quote.

It is unclear to follow why this quote was chosen.

Level 2 You have a thoughtful discussion of the quote.

You identify and explain literary element(s) clearly

Your responses are varied and well explained.

You begin to discuss the quote but could say more.

Your identification of literary elements is vague or inaccurate.

You have clear responses included but try to find other responses to vary your ideas.

You make few or no connections to the text.

Your ideas lack development

You do not discuss a literary element.

Level 3 You created an interesting, thoughtful statement about how the chosen quote is relevant to the world or literature.

You started to make a world or literature connection, but it is a bit vague. Add more details to help develop your ideas.

This is a great goal for your future assignments. Consider how these ideas relate universally to the world or to other books you have read.

Conventions The journal has been carefully proofread and edited. There are virtually no writing or mechanical errors.

The journal could still benefit from some polishing of grammar and mechanics.

There is little evidence of the journal having been proofread or edited for grammar and mechanics.

Into the Wild Dialectical Journal Assignment

Chapter # _____

Textual EvidenceTextual evidence comes directly from the book. This can be a direct quote spoken by a character or a passage of

narration.

ResponseThis is where you will respond to the text in a thoughtful way. Follow the guiding questions to respond at the three

different levels of analysis.

Write down quotation from the text Remember you can use an ellipses (…)

if you only want to use part of a quote Include citation (Author #)

Level 1: The Context of the Quote Who is saying the quote? What is happening at this moment? What does the quote mean?

Level 2: Author’s Tools/Literary Elements and Significance Choose a literary element that is revealed:

o CHARACTERIZATION: What does this passage reveal about the character?o CONFLICT: What problem or issue is revealed?o THEME: What themes are revealed in this passage? What is being said about that

theme?o SYMBOLISM: What symbol is revealed? Why is it important?o WRITING STYLE: (Diction, imagery, etc.) What does the language reveal?o OTHER?

What is the significance of these lines? Why is this quote important?o What might the author’s intention be?o Why is the passage written in such a way?o How is this passage related to the text overall?

Level 3: Develop a thesis. To create a successful thesis, ask yourself:

o Is this thesis true for the book and/or the world?o Could you argue against this thesis?

Chapter # 5

Textual EvidenceTextual evidence comes directly from the

book. This can be a direct quote spoken by a character or a passage of narration.

ResponseThis is where you will respond to the text in a thoughtful way. Follow the guiding questions to respond at the three different levels of

analysis.

“Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever…Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one” (Fitzgerald 98).

Level 1: The Context of the QuoteThis quote takes place when Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick are exploring Gatsby’s mansion. Nick Carraway observes that Gatsby must be affected by his reunion with Daisy after five years. Nick knows the green light at the end of Gatsby’s dock represented Gatsby’s hope to be in a relationship with Daisy again, and Nick wonders if Gatsby acknowledges that reality is different from the dream he hoped would come true.

Level 2: Author’s Tools/Literary Elements and SignificanceNick’s observation of Gatsby reveals the symbol of the green light. When readers were first introduced to the green light in Chapter 1 when Gatsby was on his dock with his arm outstretched to the other side of the bay, it represented Gatsby’s hope for the future: that he would one day be with Daisy. Now, the meaning of the green light has changed slightly and we can see that Gatsby’s unrealistic dream—that he can repeat the past—will likely be unattainable due to the fact that Daisy is married and has a child. Gatsby always imagined that it would be easy to erase the five years that he and Daisy were separated once they were reunited, but Nick hopes Gatsby recognizes that this is not the case. The symbol of the green light is also important to the novel because it relates to the theme of the American Dream: just as Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy again is unlikely, the idealistic American Dream is also often unattainable.

Level 3: Develop a thesis.Maintaining hope in an unrealistic dream can be harmful to a person. This thesis appears to be true for the book as a whole as other characters, such as George Wilson, struggle, and fail to obtain their dreams. George is a good man with simple dreams who is being used and treated unfairly by the world. I do not like to think that this is true for the real world as it takes a very pessimistic stance towards ones dreams and achieving them.

Multigenre research paper is an alternative to the traditional five paragraph. It emphasizes the use of multiple genres to represent a given research topic. With this type of project, writers are expected to research their given topic and then present the information they gathered using a variety of genres, with an emphasis on writing and composition. The genres created to represent the topic can be put together through the creation of a theme and bracketed by an introduction and conclusion. This creates a unified research paper that avoids the structure of a traditional five paragraph essay.

Multigenre research paper:
