From the President Dear Colleagues and Friends,
This is the last issue of Toxenlaces before the annual SOT
meeting in San Diego. The HOT Executive Committee (EC) has been
meeting monthly, and we are now in the final stages of planning for
the HOT activities at the meeting. There are a number of
HOT-related events that you should be aware of, which I hope you
will attend. HOT posters. A sub-team of the EC is putting the final
touches on the HOT poster that will be displayed and attended by
HOT officers in the global gallery in the Exhibit Hall at the
Convention Center from 11:45 AM - 12:15 PM on Monday, March 23rd.
Please stop by to see the poster and meet the officers.
HOT in the SOT Pavilion. HOT will have a designated area in the
SOT Pavilion. Please come and meet the officers and other HOT
members who spend time at the Pavilion. If you have questions about
HOT or have ideas about how HOT can better represent the Hispanic
and Latino community in SOT, please stop by. We want to hear from
you!
HOT Mentoring Event. For students and trainees, be sure to
attend this event that will take place on Tuesday, March 24th from
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM in Room 2 of the Convention Center. Come and have
a light continental breakfast and hear about ways to improve your
CV, job hunting strategies, etc. In addition to presentations,
there will be roundtables in which students will be able to
interact directly with mentors who work in various employment
sectors, including industry, academia and government.
Global Hot Topics Event. While this is not officially an HOT
event, I strongly encourage HOT members to attend this event
sponsored by the SIG Collaboration Group and entitled Global Drug
Development and Natural Products: End of an Era or an Endless
Frontier? The event will take place on Wednesday, March 25th at 7
AM in Room 2 of the Convention Center. Professor John Vederas from
the University of Alberta and Dr. Jon Mirsalis from SRI
International will tell us about natural products, their role in
human health and their potential safety issues. A light continental
breakfast will be served. I am happy to organize this event along
with colleagues from the other SIGs (WIT, ASIO, TAO, AACT, and
KTAA).

HOT Awards 2015 By Azita Cuevas, M.S., M.P.H, Ph.D.
HOT Awards Committee Chair, 2014-2015
The Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists (HOT) has provided
Travel Awards since 2005 to Hispanic/Latino students and
postdoctoral trainees working in the area of toxicology research.
The HOT travel award is offered to outstanding young scientists of
Hispanic/Latino origin to help with the associated costs of
presenting their research at and attending the SOT Annual Meeting.
I am excited to report we had a record high of 20 applicants and
the stellar quality of the candidate's research made for extremely
stiff competition.
This year applicants represented universities and research
institutions from Mexico, Brazil and the United States. We received
applications from 2 undergraduates, 2 master’s students, 13
graduate students and 3 postdoctoral fellows. All applications are
considered equally, regardless if they come from a postdoc,
graduate student or undergraduate. The letter of recommendation and
the applicant's SOT- accepted abstracts are judged by a panel of
senior HOT members, based on the quality of the following criteria:
rational/scope, experimental procedures, results, conclusion, and
how the research helps to the advance of the field of toxicology.
Each judge independently provides a score for each of the
above-mentioned criteria for each applicant. The Awards Committee
Chair adds up the individual judges’ scores and the awards go to
the applicants with the top total score.
HOT Reception. The signature event of the meeting will be the
HOT Reception, which will take place at Café Sevilla Restaurant,
353 Fifth Avenue, in the Gaslamp Quarter on Tuesday, March 24th
from 6:30 PM to 9 PM. There will be a formal program that will
include a keynote address by the first person selected as a
Distinguished Toxicologist by HOT, Dr. Ofelia Olivero. Ofelia will
tell us how one can start out dancing tango in the streets of
Buenos Aires and end up as a member of the SOT Council. There will
be Student and Post-doc Travel Awards, announcements from our
Sister Organizations in Latin America, delicious Spanish food and
drinks, and plenty of opportunities for networking and socializing.
Those who purchase an HOT pin will get a free glass of sangria,
which we may all need to relax after a long day of symposia,
workshops and roundtables. Finally, the evening would not be
complete without music and dancing to bachata, salsa, and merengue
(or even a step or two of tango).
While attending the meeting in San Diego, please take this
opportunity to meet as many current and past HOT officers and
members as possible. If you want to become more involved with HOT,
this is a great opportunity to let us know that you would like to
do more as a member of HOT. Positions on the HOT EC open up each
year, and we are always looking for members who would like to help
on a HOT committee. Please check the HOT website for more
information about the HOT EC and committees, and come to the
meeting prepared to let us know how HOT can grow and improve as a
professional organization for Hispanic/Latino toxicologists. Feel
free to contact me at [email protected] or any member of the
EC with questions or suggestions you may have for HOT. I look
forward to meeting you in beautiful San Diego. Linval DePass,

Hispanic Organization of Toxicologist Distinguished Toxicologist
Award 2015
The Distinguished Toxicologist Award will from this point
forward be given each year to a toxicologist of Hispanic origin
whose work exemplifies the mission of the HOT-SIG by contributing
to the advancement of the field of toxicology. Furthermore, the
recipient of this award will be considered based on their
scientific and/or regulatory accomplishments as well as their
community services.
This year, we are very proud to announce the first Distinguished
Toxicologist Award winner: Dr. Ofelia Olivero. Dr. Olivero is
currently the Associate Director for Scientific Diversity of the
Center for Cancer Training at the National Cancer Institute at NIH
and is a Past President of HOT.
Dr. Olivero was trained as a cytogeneticist in Argentina, and
then did postdoctoral training at NIH in the National Cancer
Institute. Her career continued in that organization, where she
held positions of visiting associate, staff scientist, and senior
staff scientist. She was able to combine her expertise in genetic
toxicology with carcinogenesis. Her seminal observations on the
transplacental carcinogenesis of agents used in AIDS therapy
generated the field of molecular epidemiology of nucleoside
analogs. She is presently applying molecular cytogenetic techniques
to understand nucleoside analog induced carcinogenesis in an
attempt to provide knowledge to generate safer drugs and treatments
for HIV-1 patients. Dr. Olivero has generated a change in the
culture of mentoring through her recent book on interdisciplinary
mentoring and by delivering multiple talks and workshops on the
topic. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her
scientific profile and her mentoring knowledge. Additionally, she
has shown a singular style of leadership based on consensus and
inclusion and is currently president of the Environmental
Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (formerly EMS), has been president
of the Genetic Toxicology Association, and holds numerous positions
in many scientific organizations. Her natural leadership, talent,
and mentoring abilities together with her scientific creativity
have empowered numerous young individuals to pursue careers in
toxicology.
Dr. Olivero will be receiving her Award during the HOT Reception
on Tuesday 24th at Cafe Sevilla. Please join us to congratulate Dr.
Olivero.
