YEAR TWO UNDER COACH NEU• This is year two for Ball State under head coach Mike Neu. He is one of 21 FBS head coaches who is coaching at his alma mater. The only change on the coaching staff is the addition of David Elson as defensive coordinator. Elson served as the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2003-09 and spent the 2016 season as Western Illinois’ defensive coordinator.
NEW BLACK HELMET• The Cardinals debuted a new black hel-met on Sept. 23 at Western Kentucky. The helmet featured an oversized Cardinal logo on the right side and the ‘Ball State’ word mark on the left. The Ball State uniform and black helmet were featured on the Sept. 23 segment of ‘Gear Up’ on ESPN’s SportsCenter. Ball State is also scheduled to wear the helmet in the season finale against Miami.
NOT MUCH YELLOW ON THE FIELD• Ball State currently leads the MAC and ranks fourth nationally in fewest penalties per game (3.91). The Cardinals only commit-ted two penalties for a season-low 10 yards last week against Buffalo.
SUCCESS IN HOME OPENERS• Thanks to a 51-31 win against UAB on Sept. 9, Ball State has now won eight consecutive home openers at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals have won those games by an average of 16.6 points.
YOUTH SHINES IN SEASON OPENER• Sixteen true freshmen or redshirt freshmen saw action in the Sept. 2 season opener at Illinois. S Bryce Cosby, TE Nolan Givan and OL Kaleb Slaven were in the starting lineup. Givan notched the team’s
first touchdown of the year while Cosby registered the team’s first interception.

HIGH PRAISE FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS• Ball State had 38 true freshmen listed on its opening week roster. The incoming class was rated the second highest in the MAC by 247Sports. Assistant coach Chevis Jack-son was named 247Sports’ MAC Recruiter of the Year as he helped the Cardinals sign eight recruits from the state of Georgia.

Meanwhile, Miller’s father (Greg) was a part of the Ball State basketball team that made a run to the 1990 NCAA Tournament ‘Sweet 16’.
BALL STATE IN THE NFL• Following NFL preseason cuts, WR Willie Snead IV (New Orleans Saints) was the only former Cardinal to make an active roster. GOOD AND BAD ON 3RD DOWNS• Ball State converted 58.8 percent (30-of-51) of its third downs through the first three games. However, over the last eight games, the Cardinals have converted just 32.1 percent (43-of-134) of their third downs.
INJURY DERAILS NEAL’S SOLID START• Junior QB Riley Neal has missed the last seven games with a leg injury. His comple-tion percentage (67.7) would rank first in the MAC. He completed better than 60 per-cent of his passes in each of his three starts. Neal’s completion rate of 74.2 percent against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 16 was the second highest of his career.
FRESHMEN STEPPING UP• Ball State has true freshmen leading the team in rushing (Caleb Huntley) and receiv-ing (Justin Hall). Huntley leads all MAC freshmen and ranks fourth in the league with 844 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Hall leads the entire league in receptions per game (6.6).
MILLER FINDS THE END ZONE• Sophomore WR Riley Miller tallied his first collegiate touchdown reception in the first quarter at Northern Illinois on Nov. 9. Redshirt freshman QB Drew Plitt connect-ed with Miller for a 23-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-all.
PLITT DELIVERS IN FIRST START• Redshirt freshman QB Drew Plitt made his first career start on Nov. 2 at Eastern Michigan. Plitt threw touchdown passes to freshman WR Khalil Newton and redshirt freshman TE Nolan Givan. Those were Ball State’s first touchdown passes since Sept. 16.
MEMORABLE CATCHES FOR NEWTON AND GILLIS• Freshman WR Khalil Newton’s first col-legiate catch went for a 25-yard touchdown in the first quarter at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 2. Meanwhile, sophomore WR Bren-nan Gillis caught a 16-yard pass on his first play as a collegiate football player at EMU. Gillis spent the previous two years playing basketball at Northern Kentucky.
MARKICE HURT MAKES SPLASH• Freshman RB Markice Hurt made his collegiate debut on Oct. 21 against Central Michigan. On his very first play, he pro-duced a 24-yard catch-and-run. Hurt fin-ished with 17 yards rushing and 30 yards receiving.
HELLO CALEB HUNTLEY• Filling in for an injured RB James Gilbert, freshman Caleb Huntley had an impressive performance at Akron on Oct. 7. He be-came the first Cardinal to reach 100 yards rushing this season with 129 yards on the ground. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
THAT’S HOW TO START A GAME!• Ball State has scored a touchdown on its opening possession twice this year, but the most recent time happened back on Sept. 16 against Tennessee Tech. The Cardinals went 75 yards in 12 plays, capped by TE No-lan Givan’s three-yard touchdown recep-tion.
SPEAKING OF TIGHT ENDS• The Ball State tight ends and wide receiv-ers each have five touchdown receptions this year. Redshirt freshman TE Nolan Givan leads all Ball State players with four touchdown catches. Givan’s most recent score was an 11-yard touchdown reception last week against Buffalo.
LOTS OF OPTIONS AT RUNNING BACK• Ball State’s top three running backs all notched runs of at least 35 yards against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 16 – Malik Dun-ner (66 yards), James Gilbert (48) and Caleb Huntley (37). Dunner’s run, which was Ball State’s biggest play from scrimmage this year, went for a touchdown with 2:21 left in the third quarter.
MILLER MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT• Sophomore WR Riley Miller was award-ed a scholarship during the latter stages of preseason camp. He proved his worth right away in the opener at Illinois as he led all players in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (86). He currently ranks second on the team in both receptions (27) and receiv-ing yards (280).
UPS AND DOWNS ON FIELD GOALS• Junior K Morgan Hagee began the year missing four of his first five field goals. He then responded by making six straight, highlighted by tying a personal high with three field goals against Central Michigan on Oct. 21. All three field goals were 40 yards or longer. However, Hagee missed both attempts at Eastern Michigan on Nov 2.
SNYDER AND HAGEE SPLITTING TIME AT PUNTER• True freshman P Nathan Snyder has taken most of the punt attempts this year, but junior Morgan Hagee has come on to split time with Snyder in the last four games. Hagee has registered seven punts inside the 20-yard line the last four weeks and a team season-long 59 yard punt at Northern Illinois on Nov. 9.
STREAK COMES TO AN END• The Cardinals had a punt blocked for the first time in six years on Oct. 21 when Central Michigan pulled it off in the second quarter. Interestingly enough, Central Michigan was the previous team to block a Ball State punt on Oct. 22, 2011.
DUNNER’S SPLASH PLAY AGAINST UAB• RB Malik Dunner returned a third quarter kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against UAB on Sept. 9. That play gave the Cardinals a 38-24 lead. It marked the first Ball State kickoff return for a score since former WR KeVonn Mabon scampered 89 yards to paydirt on Oct. 24, 2015 against Central Michigan.
MOORE BLOCKS PUNT VS. UAB• CB David Moore blocked a fourth quarter punt in the win over UAB on Sept. 9. It was Ball State’s first punt blocked since Sept. 10, 2016 at Indiana.
NEW FACES IN THE PUNTING GAME• For the first time since 2014, the Cardi-nals have new faces fill their punter and long snapper roles. Kyle Schmidt served as the punter for the previous four years and averaged 41.0 yards per punt, which ranks third in the Ball State record book. Nick Traub held down the long snapping duties from 2014-16.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Game #12 Chirps LB David Rueth recorded his first collegiate interception and freshman DE Christian Albright produced his first collegiate sack versus TTU.
THAT’S A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION• Making his first collegiate start on Sept. 2 at Illinois, LB Jacob White tallied his first career sack on the opening play of the game. The sophomore finished with a team-high nine tackles against the Illini.

FRESH FACES AT LINEBACKER• Ball State was one of four FBS programs that featured zero career linebacker starts on its roster heading into the 2017 season. The other schools were Kansas State, Old Dominion and UNLV. The three starters from last year – Zack Ryan, Aaron Taylor and Sean Wiggins – combined for 96 starts in their Ball State careers. Wiggins was an All-MAC third team selection last fall.
GET TO THE QUARTERBACK• The Cardinals racked up 31 sacks in 2016, which ranked second in the confer-ence. Senior DE Anthony Winbush led the team and ranked third in the MAC with 8.5 sacks. He put an exclamation point on his 2016 season with a then career-high 2.5 sacks in the finale at Miami.
YOUNG UNIT WITH NEW DC• New defensive coordinator David Elson will be working with a lot of fresh faces on that side of the ball this year. Walton ranked fourth in the league in passes defended (14) last year.

OXFORD, Ohio – Host Miami scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:44 remaining and proceeded to hold off the Ball State football team, 21-20, Tuesday night at Yager Stadium.
Miami, which began the year 0-6, won its sixth straight game to finish the regular sea-son 6-6 overall and 6-2 in the MAC. Ball State ends its 2016 season with a 4-8 record and 1-7.
The Cardinals took a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter only to see Miami string together a nine-play, 75-yard drive to take the lead for good. The RedHawks scored on a 3rd-and-14 play as quarterback Gus Ragland found Sam Shisso open for a 27-yard touch-down strike.
It appeared Ball State would quickly answer as senior wide receiver KeVonn Mabon returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. However, the Cardinals were flagged for holding near midfield, negating the touchdown. Ball State did move the football into Miami territory on the drive, but stalled at the 48-yard line. Facing a 4th-and-2 with 2:42 left and all three timeouts, Ball State elected to punt the ball.
Miami then converted a pair of third downs to run out the clock. The RedHawks snapped a three-game losing streak to BSU and became bowl eligible for the first time since 2010.

Last Week vs. Buffalo (Nov. 16, 2017)
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team fell to Buffalo Thursday night at Scheumann Stadium, 40-24.
Freshman running back Caleb Huntley rushed for a career-high 141 yards and wide receiver Justin Hall tallied 102 receiving yards, his second 100-yard receiving game of the season. Defensively, Anthony Winbush tied the school’s all-time sack record with 25 career sacks.
Buffalo led from start to finish, but Ball State threatened to make it a one-possession game in the middle of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals started the final frame with a 47-yard touchdown pass from senior Jack Milas to Hall to cut the deficit to 37-24.
Winbush’s sack on Buffalo’s next possession forced a quick three-and-out from the Bulls. Ball State went to work and moved the ball to the Buffalo 32-yard line. Facing a 4th-and-1, Ball State tried a run up the middle, but the Bulls stuffed the play and took over on downs. Buffalo then put the game away with a drive that lasted more than six minutes and resulted in a field goal to make the score, 40-24.
Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns. All four touchdown passes were completed to Anthony Johnson. Johnson finished the day with 153 receiving yards.

Head Coach Mike Neu2nd season at Ball State | 8th season as a head coach (including arena league)
16th season as a football coachHometown: Indianapolis, Ind.Alma Mater: Ball State ’94Family: wife Charmin … three children – Graycen, Carson and Chase
@BSUCoachNeu
One of Ball State University’s very own, Mike Neu, is now in his second season as the Cardinals head coach. Neu played col-legiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
“We are delighted to have Mike as our head football coach,” Ball State Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. “His football expertise, leadership traits and passion for Ball State are qualities that our student-athletes and fans will embrace.”
Neu has more than 15 years of coaching experience with stops in the National Foot-ball League (NFL), Division I FBS football and the arena leagues. Before returning to Ball State, Neu served two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guid-ance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and completions (428).
Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC cham-pionship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28-of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory.
Neu played professionally in the Cana-dian Football League and Arena Football League (AFL) from 1995-97 before begin-ning his coaching career in 1998 with the AFL’s Nashville Kats. In 2000, Neu was named head coach for the first time as he took over the Arena Football 2’s (AF2) Au-gusta Stallions. He led that organization to a conference title in 2000 with a 14-4 record
and was named the AF2 Coach of the Year.In 2001 and 2002, Neu worked with
the AFL’s Carolina Cobras. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to head coach in 2002. During his stint as head coach, Neu led the team to the quarterfinals of the AFL playoffs, including the team’s first-ever playoff win.
Neu then spent four years as head coach of the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo. There, he compiled a 33-31 record and earned 2004 AFL Coach of the Year honors. During his first season at the helm, Neu led the team to a franchise-best 11-5 record, a divi-sion title and a playoff berth.
From 2008-12, Neu worked on the New Orleans Saints’ player personnel staff. He then spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Tulane as the quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Neu helped guide Tulane to a 7-6 overall record and its first postseason appearance in 11 years – the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
Neu received his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Ball State in 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 1994 season. He was inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen (16), and two sons, Car-son (15) and Chase (7).
