This week we celebrate three great days. One secular in nature, although religious at its very root, and the other two celebrating the gift of life given and shared by God in and through Jesus Christ.
Halloween has its foundation in “All Hal-lows Eve” or in plainer language, the Eve of All Saints Day (November 1). While it
has, for the most part, become a secular celebration, we as Christians are called to remember and prepare our hearts to recognize the wonder of the saints in our life.
All Saints Day joins us in prayer to the communion of saints in heaven. This is especially true at our Eucharistic celebration where we cry out “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Host. Heaven and earth are filled with your glory.” When we choose to be holy we are filled with God’s grace and show forth his glory.
Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that con-front our city/state/country, and how the Gospel com-pels us to respond as faithful citizens in our communi-ty.
We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sis-ters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty.
We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children un-born and those abandoned, Men and women op-pressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.
We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom.
We pray for discernment so that we may choose lead-ers who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

All Souls Day is a day where we pray for all the dead, those whom we remember, such as family or friends, and those who have no one to pray for them. We remember “All Souls” because we believe that each person soul is destined for salvation and we pray for this gift given and shared by God. In the funeral liturgy we pray, “Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended. When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death we gain an ever-lasting dwelling place in heaven.” This short prayer reminds us God is the ever-merciful judge who comes to gather all his children to himself.

ALTAR DEL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS DAY OF THE DEAD ALTAR
The children in the catechesis made paper flowers, skulls, and other decorations for the “Altar del Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead Altar) which is in display inside our Church for the month of November.
The Altar del Día De Los Muertos is part of the Mexican tradition to celebrate the All Saints Day and the All Souls Day. Creative and elaborated altars are built in the homes throughout Mexico and by Mexicans around the world. The tradition focuses on celebrating and remembering friends and family who have passed away. The altar is a mixture of symbolism that comes from both native traditions and Catholic beliefs brought to Mexico by the Spanish conquistadors. The altar is made with sugar skulls, marigolds,
photos of the deceased and samples of their favorite food or drinks.
Please stop by the Altar del Día de los Muertos and pray for the deceased loved family members in our community.
