Why should government be social
• Constituents are waiting• Seize or cede the conversation• Engagement improves political efficacy• People expect government to be on social
media• Prepare for crisis
Govt engages citizens where the
world can see
Citizens engage each
other via social media & email
Communicating w/ govt via social
media & email
Taking action via social media &
Citizens use social media to talk to government
Social media are the new government offices
Great expectations• On social media
– Citizens are listening, engaging, & conferring– Citizens are better at using tools than government– Citizens want to act on information – Citizens expect government to keep up
• If government meets expectations– Will be more responsive to citizens– Will be more efficient delivering services– Will be better at handling crises– Will develop & implement better policy– Will improve political efficacy
Bottom line: Why must government
be on social media?
“We used to live in a world where the producers of content determined the
channels of distribution.
We now live in a world where the consumers of content determine the
channels of distribution.”
