Ka pai Mel and thank you for sharing these very different experiences our students enjoyed last week. We wanted to share with you this great class photo we took on our outing this week. We went on an Insect hunt. we pretended like it was a Bear Hunt, just like the popular childrens book. We went through the grass, around the poles and over the muddy hill. We didnt see many insects though but we had fun and enjoyed the park afterwards. We love our outings as it teaches us to take turns, walk in public, follow instructions and most of all, we have lots of fun! We hope you are having fun too! "Harold and Amanda have had a wonderful time working with the students at Allenvale for the last 6 days. Inside the mobile classroom, students were in awe of the changing lights, stars on the roof and of course with Mr Harold the Giraffe himself. The use of technology in the mobile classroom included "scanning" students with the Xbox Kinect to see how our heart pumps our blood, how our brains send messages through our nervous system, even what we've just eaten for our lunch! The main focus of the visit was learning about our own identity, how we are all unique and wonderful. We also explored friendship and kindness and how kind words can make a difference to others. Some of the senior students explored 'teenage basic needs' and how we can deal with big emotions including strategies to "calm the brain". Strategies such as star breathing were introduced as a calming tool. The highlight of the week for most of the students was a visit from Harold in their classroom, it was high fives and handshakes all around for the life-sized giraffe (a.k.a Jenny! ). Life Education looks forward to visiting Allenvale again next year. " Many thanks, Amanda Thompson - Educator, Life Education Trust Canterbury.
