Butterflies flutter from flower to flower, sucking sweet nectar. Many butterflies are

brightly coloured to warn the predators that they taste bad. Other than as a warning, a

butterfly’s beautiful colours also tell other butterflies what kind it is. Some have bright

colours on top of their wings and dull colours underneath.

Most butterflies fly during the day, while their relatives, the moth, take over at night. The

yellow emperor moth has eye-shaped spots on its wings that fool its enemies into

thinking it is much bigger than it really is. When butterflies land and fold their wings,

they seem to disappear. However, when a moth lands, its wings lie flat.

In cold countries, some butterflies fly thousands of miles to a warmer place when winter

approaches. This way, they do not need to freeze in the cold.
