Explorers And Adventurers

Back from the long October Break and all refreshed, the children were happy to come back to school. The smiles on their faces as they walked in was priceless. The last week of October was all about revising the UOI of the month and we did that through reinforcing their concepts using flashcards and beautiful rhymes on the different seasons and the characteristics that are unique to them.

Artwork this week had lots on interesting activities from sticking a carrot nose onto a snowman, to making a bright kite, to colouring summer caps with vivid summery shades and sticking gum boots used on a cold and wet rainy day. Aimed at improving the hand eye co-ordination of the children, these activities were greatly enjoyed by the children.

In the Montessori class, the children worked with the Colour Box 1 and were also engaged with rolling and unrolling a

mat.

Special Thursday was Sports this week and all the children of the class of Explorers and Adventurers had a fun activity lined up where they had to throw the beach ball into a basket. Enthusiastic and eager to run around towards the basket, it was fun to see the joy on their faces when they did manage to put in the ball in the basket.

Next week we look forward to starting the new month of November with our new UOI of Transport.

Discoverers

We welcomed our young discoverers back from their Dussehra break. Children spoke about their holiday excitedly narrating their fun activities with the help of their teachers.

We also began a new UOI- Seasons- Summer, Winter, Monsoon and Fall were discussed in great detail with the class. Children were shown pictures of the clothes we wear during different seasons, the food we eat and the festivals we celebrate during these months.

Related artwork and worksheets were done where children coloured mittens and matched clothes.

Our Discoverers also learnt about the Rainbow and the different colours in a rainbow.

Montessori- Cylinder Blocks, Pattern writing, inset colouring and pouring of liquids was practised with them.

Discoverers understood why we celebrate Halloween. They were told about trick or treat and how children dress up in different costumes. Discoverers came to school all dressed up in different costumes and had loads of fun singing songs and talking about their costumes.

Enquirers

Classes resumed after the Puja holidays with the children sharing their holiday activities during circle time. A trip to the zoo, ice creams at the mall, fun in the park, vacation at grandma's house and even a day at daddy's office were some of the anecdotes that the Enquirers shared with us. They enthusiastically recalled and sang the songs we had introduced before the break. So it was heartening to sing "icy toes chilly nose, what shall we do on a rainy day, baarish aaye and it is sunny all around".

We brought alive the delights of seasons with a brightly painted kite, a clouded and rainy day and winter fashion in our art activities. Furthermore , the children made a jack o' lantern for the Funtastic Friday celebrating Halloween. Dressing up in Halloween costumes added to their fun. Audio visual treats just notched up their understanding of the festival and its fun with tricks and treats.

Sports on Thursday involved a race to don caps and scooping up their bottles to the finish line. The children gleefully enjoyed this activity.

In Montessori, the Enquirers did number tracing, the four cylinder blocks and knobless cylinders. We also continue to practise pattern writing in class as well as home assignments.

Rangers

Back to school and ready to move on with our inquiry into the topic ‘Seasons’ which we had started earlier, made us do a quick revision on the causes for seasons and the three main seasons summer, winter and monsoon. This week children also learnt about the seasons of autumn and spring. We also displayed a variety of clothes we use in different seasons to make their learning more relevant. Children also solved worksheets on the above topics and made their own weather charts, a mitten craft and coloured the picture of a snail sitting on a toad stool.

On Thursday a fun sport activity of picking out winter clothes from the basket of assorted clothes and running to the finish line was organised for the children which they greatly enjoyed.

6

In Science we revised Clouds, Rainbow, Rain and Air and children had some multi media presentation on how seasons are caused.

In Geography children were introduced to the concept of land forms, mainly islands and lakes and coloured pictures of different land forms.

In Montessori children were encouraged to work on the previous concepts introduced to them and were given a presentation on the concept of ‘Subtraction’.

We also spoke to the children about the autumn festival of ‘Halloween’ which is celebrated on the 31st of October in most parts of the globe and children coloured the picture of a ‘Jack-o’- lantern’ and took it home on Friday.

Over the past 100 years, there have been many discoveries made in the area of transportation. Modern transportation has changed how we work and live – we can live in one city and work in another city.

This article will cover Land Transport only:

CARS:

Cars come in different shapes and sizes, and run on petrol or diesel. Cars cause pollution so most people like to use the car as little as possible. You can also see electric cards, which are better for the environment.

TRAIN:

Trains are for long distances and run on tracks. India has one of the world's largest railway networks carrying millions of passengers everyday.

METRO:

The Bangalore Metro travels at 67 Kmph between Trinity Circle and MG Road. BMRC had to cut down 1500 trees in order to build this underground train system for the benefit of people who live in the city. However, they planted 15,000 saplings across the city.

BUS:

Buses are like big cars that carry many people. The vision of BMTC is; “Make BMTC sustainable, people-centered and choice mode of travel for everyone”

Things you can do at home:

1. Use coloured tape to make a large maze on the floor. Add numbers to different areas. Let your child use a toy truck; or improvise and make a truck with a small carton/box. Let your child transport some small vegetables like corn kernels or peas from one area to another.

2. Get some gentle soap or use shaving cream to have a car wash with all your toy cars.

3. Point out the different modes of transport and encourage your child to do the same as you go out over the weekend.

They are used to trek through the reserve to see the different animals. Camels are a very unique form of transport in the desert. They are known as the ship of the desert because they can adapt to hot weather and travel for days without water. In cold countries, like Canada and the Arctic Circle, they have dog sleds pulled by husky dogs. In the Himalayas in India, we use donkeys to carry goods and luggage. Donkeys are very strong. Horses are even stronger and bigger than donkeys. Horses are used as transport in difficult mountain areas where the roads are narrow and steep. Some police also use horses to patrol certain areas. Reindeer or caribou are used to pull Santa’s sleigh to bring present to all our lovely children.
