Study English at the University of Colorado Boulder’s International English CenterAtthefootoftheRockyMountains,onthebeautifulcampusoftheUniversityofColoradoBoulder,theInternational English Center (IEC)offersarichvarietyofacademic,professional,andculturalprogramsforteens,universityandgraduate-levelstudents,andprofessionals.TheIECprovidesasafe,nurturing,anddynamicenvironmentwherestudentsdeveloptheirEnglishlanguageskills,exploreU.S.culture,andconnectwithotherstudentsfromaroundtheworld.
JustonehourawayfromDenver,thestatecapitalofColorado,andthemajesticRockyMountains,studentshaveaccesstogreatentertainment,museums,theaters,restaurants,skiing,andthebeautifuloutdoors.AttheIEC,studentsdiscoveraworldofpossibilities,achievetheireducationalgoals,experienceunforgettableadventures,andleavewithalifetimeofmemories.
Intensive English
TheIntensive English ProgramisdesignedforinternationalstudentswhoarepreparingtoenterauniversityorgraduateprogramintheU.S.ItisalsoappropriateforworkingprofessionalsandcommunitymemberswhowanttoimprovetheiracademicEnglish.Studentstakewriting,reading,listening&speaking,andelectivecourses.ClassesareinteractiveandallowstudentstodeveloptheirlanguageskillswhilepracticingEnglishinrealsituations.Classsizeis12-15studentsonaverage.TeachersprovidestudentsextensivefeedbackwhichhelpsstudentstoimprovetheirEnglishandbuildtheirconfidence.
Program Highlights:• Five8-weeksessionsperyear.• 8levels,introductorytoadvanced.• Newstudentstakeaplacementtestonarrivaltodeterminetheirlevel.• FacultymembershaveMaster’sdegreesinTESOLorrelatedfields.• Corecourses(16hours/week)includewriting,reading,andlistening&
speaking.Grammarandpronunciationareintegratedintoeachcourse.• Electives(4hours/week)providestudentswiththeopportunitytofocus
onaspecificskillorcontentarea.Subjectsincludesports&nutrition,EnglishforSTEM,filmmaking,andmore.

ESL Academic Bridge
TheESL Academic Bridge Program(24hours/week)isforconditionally-admittedstudentswhohavemettheacademicrequirementsbuthavenotmettheEnglishlanguageproficiencyrequirementsforadmissionintoanundergraduatedegreeprogramattheUniversityofColoradoBoulder.TheprogrampreparesstudentstomeettheEnglishlanguagechallengesofundergraduatestudyattheuniversity.StudentsnotonlytakecourseworkinacademicEnglishanduniversitypreparation,butalsoparticipateinworkshops,activities,andevents,whichhelpthemtransitiontotheuniversityandbecomepartoftheuniversitycommunity.StudentsmustsuccessfullycompletetheBridgeprogrampriortobeginningtheirdegreeprogramattheuniversity.

Immigration Advising
TheIECimmigrationadviserprovidesstudentswithinformationabouthowtomaintaintheirF-1internationalstudentstatus.Theimmigrationadviseranswersquestionsrelatedtoprogramextensions,transferringinoroutoftheprogram,termexemptions(whenstudentswanttotakeasessionoff),reducedcourseloads,earlyauthorizedwithdrawals,andon-campusemploymentregulations.Theimmigrationadviserprovidesworkshopsandmeetswithstudentsone-on-onetoensurethattheyunderstandallexpectations,requirements,andregulations.TheadviseralsohelpstosmooththetransitionbetweentheESLAcademicBridgeProgramandtheUniversityofColoradoBoulderforthosestudentswhointendtomatriculateintoadegreeprogram.
Personal Attention through Academic Advising
IntensiveEnglishProgramstudentsareassignedanIECprimaryadviserwhoprovidesguidanceandsupportthroughouttheirstudies.Inadditiontochecking-inwithstudentsabouttheirattendanceandacademicprogress,primaryadviserscanhelpstudentschooseelectivecourses,accessservicesoncampus,andprovideassistancewithapplyingtouniversitiesandgraduateschools.
Recreational & Cultural Activities
TheIECprovidesmanyopportunitiesforstudentstoenjoyrecreationalactivitiesoutsidetheclassroom.Eachsession,theIEChostsactivitiessuchas:
