Traditional recovery programs are going to be 12 step based programs of recovery that rely on AA or NA as the foundation for recovery. Alternative drug rehab programs is generally not going to use a 12 step program as the foundation, and will probably have a different and unique approach, such as behavioral counseling or maybe an holistic approach instead. There is no clear data that says that these approaches work any better than traditional recovery methods, however, but it can be a unique alternative to people who have tried and failed with the traditional route.

There are religious based drug and alcohol programs available, and there are actually quite a few of them out there. Many of them are set up within or as part of a homeless shelter, but this does not necessarily make them any less effective. In fact, the success rates for these types of rehabs seem to run very close to that of other types of treatment. So for some people who are open to the idea of a religious solution, a Christian based rehab can make a lot of sense.
