P.E.A.K. Performers 3 rd Grade Sycolin Creek Elementary Newsletter: September 2015 Hello. Welcome to 3 rd Grade! Although some of you may not necessarily be new to this school, everyone will be new to this classroom. During the first few weeks, will be covering new classroom procedures, routines, and pre- assessments. Children will learn our new rules and classroom expectations. They will be getting to know each other and understand that our room is a community of caring, sharing and understanding. Things will be quite different, and being that I want to give everyone a comfortable new start, consider this our “PRACTICE TIME”. It will take some time to settle in, but I hope to alleviate any anxiety that you or your students should have. I promise that further newsletters will be shorter! Smiles, Lynne Peak Welcome 3rd grade is an exciting year as your child transitions from primary grades to upper elementary. Students become more responsible for keeping track of their assignments and new learning will take place. MATH: Although previous knowledge will be built upon, memorization of multiplication facts will be a key component later in the year. For now, please work on memorizing addition and subtraction facts. We will start the year reviewing telling time to the nearest 5 minutes and calendar skills. We will introduce telling time to the nearest minute, elapsed time and reading a schedule. We will end the month studying place value to the hundred thousands place. Students will learn to write a number in standard, expanded and written form, along with modeling numbers. LANGUAGE ARTS: This year students will use what they’ve learned about sentence structure, spelling, word choice and content to write more developed pieces of writing including stories, books, reports, and personal essays, which they will publish and present in front of various types of audiences. This month, our focus will be on proper sentence structure and basic paragraph composition. SCIENCE: Students will review science topics by participating in a variety of hands-on experiences on topics such as simple machines and molecules. They will even have the opportunity to be the “science teacher” on a topic for which they have developed a lesson and activity. This quarter we will focus on the scientific process and build upon second grade lessons on “matter”. SOCIAL STUDIES: This year students will learn about ancient civilizations and how we learned from them through their successes and mistakes. This quarter we will be reviewing and building upon the community and map skills they learned last year.. CURSIVE HANDWRITING: Students will learn to recognize and write neatly and efficiently in cursive. In order to learn the proper formation of cursive letters, we will start the year reviewing D’Nealian print. Our classroom theme is “P.E.A.K. Performers,” which lends itself to many fun motivators. First of all, I consider every student in my class a “star” for being uniquely & amazingly “themselves.” I want each one of them to celebrate their strengths and work on their weaknesses so they can shine like the “superstars” that they are! In addition, I give students many opportunities throughout the year to be “on stage” and present their work to various audiences, such as their peers, younger students, parents, or other VIP’s. I find giving students a purpose for their projects motivate them to do their very best. And after all, life is like a movie. Each day is a different scene with various acts. The neatest part, is we get to write the script and decide how we play each part. With every student being a star, our teacher being the director, and our classmates & parents playing our supporting cast members, we can all work together to make this the best superstar school year ever! Welcome

3rd grade is an exciting year as your child transitions from primary grades to upper elementary. Students become more responsible for keeping track of their assignments and new learning will take place. Page 2: 3 rd Grade Sycolin Creek Elementary Newsletter: September 2015 Hello. Welcome to 3 rd Grade! Although some of you may not necessarily be new to this school,

Your child will have five journals (composition books) used for the following subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Spelling.

These journals will be used to take notes, practice concepts and to bring home to study. Whenever your child brings a journal home, they need to return it the following day, unless specified, because they are an integral part of our lessons.

SNACKS

Weekly homework will consist of a reading log, math homework that correlates with what we are working on in class, and occasionally social studies and science concepts practice.  Homework expectations will be changing throughout the first quarter.  Please be sure to review the homework sheet that comes home in the homework agenda pack each week.  Homework should last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.  Each night your child completes their homework neatly and in a timely manner, they will receive a “homework ticket” to be used at the end of the quarter in our “homework” store.

TIMER METHOD:  I have found that when children have a specific time to complete a task, they work towards that goal.  Discuss with your child how long a specific task should take, then set the timer for that amount of time.  Adjust the time as needed.  Sometimes having the timer helps to motivate the child to stay focused and use their time wisely.

Please don’t let homework drag on and on.  If you are having a problem.  Please contact me.  If your child is wasting their time and your time, put the homework away and DO NOT sign the log.  You can write me a note that this was your child’s decision.  The next day, they will not earn a homework ticket and I will discuss the importance of taking responsibility for their own work, not you.

LIMIT DISTRACTIONS:  Distractions around the home can definitely play a role in making homework take longer than it should.  Find a quiet, well-lighted space for your child to work.

SUPPLY BOX:  Having a go-to box with all the supplies needed to complete any given homework assignment will save time and keep the focus on the assignment by eliminating unnecessary wandering around the house looking for a specific item.

READING LOG:  The reading log will start the second week of school.  On Monday’s the log will explain any changes to homework expectations.  Your child is to read each evening and answer the question on the reading log.  Please have your child neatly copy in the title of the book and the minutes read.  Answers should be written in complete sentences.

Spelling Homework:  Information about the spelling program I use will be coming home soon.  Spelling lists will be coming home on Thursday nights (when we start) and spelling tests will be given on Wednesdays.  Your child will have many chances to study their words in class.  I will not be assigning spelling homework.  However, your child should be studying at home if they are not doing well on their weekly tests.

Independence is a goal I want for my students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Third graders are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please encourage them to think through and problem-solve in everyday situations.

NOTES

HOMEWORK

Journals

WATER BOTTLES: Although we do have a water fountain, feel free to have your child bring a water bottle to class. Please choose one with tight fitting lids. I do not allow the bottles to be at their desks because they cause too much distraction. They need to stay in the backpacks. Encourage your child to bring their water bottle home regularly to wash it.

TENNIS SHOES: Students must wear sneakers on PE days. If your child likes to run or play on the playground equipment, it would be beneficial for them to wear sneakers daily.

HOT AND COLD: Some places in the school are very warm and other places are rather chilly. You may want to have your child keep a light jacket in their back pack so they can use it if needed.

We all know that the offer of incentives can be a fun way to help motivate students to succeed. Ask your child about our Superstar Ticket homework reward program.

INDEPENDENCE

Kids need snacks! When healthy snack choices are made, they provide the nutrients and calories kids need for growth, good health and energy to get through the day. Please pack your child a healthy snack to enjoy on a daily basis. I will try to have the snack each day between 9:45 and 10:00 am. The students may be working through snack time, so please make sure snacks are easy and quick to eat and do not contain nuts. Thank you for your consideration.
