•Deforestation destroys their habitat and drives them to extinction

•Deforestation also results in loss of food as it brings about an imbalance in the eco-system

•It also leads to an increase in the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air

Page 4: 3 J Zach And Shaun Deforestation Presentation

• Example of an animal affected by deforestation:The Golden Lion Tamarin

• Less than 3% of their original habitat remains today.

• There are approximately 1500 left(500 in zoos).• Because of deforestation, their habitat has been

fragmented into small unconnected areas, each only able to support a few tamarins thus breeding is affected leading to their endangerment.

• Deforestation leads to a loss of food supply• Possible loss of medicines.• It could also lead to respiratory problems (as

the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased)

• Various environmental hazards such as landslides and acid rain.

• Causes greenhouse effect which causes global warming

Page 6: 3 J Zach And Shaun Deforestation Presentation

• Deforestation causes top soil to be loosened because the roots of trees are no longer in the soil to hold the soil together

• During rain, the top soil gets washed away and pollutes nearby water bodies

Page 7: 3 J Zach And Shaun Deforestation Presentation

• Oil spills, one of the most common forms of water pollution – Sea birds to die because their wings will be coated with oil that

makes the feathers stick together and thus causing them the inability to fly

– Poison the marine life– Prevents oxygen from dissolving into the water preventing aquatic

plants from photosynthesizing and thus marine life which are dependent on plants for oxygen, food and shelter will in turn die.

• Drinking polluted water could also cause deaths.

• Water pollution caused by soil erosion – Makes water bodies muddy and thus prevent sunlight from

reaching the aquatic plants,– These water plants cannot photosynthesize and will die– The aquatic animals which are dependent on the plants or food,

oxygen and shelter will also die.

• Drinking polluted water can cause typhoid and cholera

• People swimming in dirty water can develop ear infections or other diseases.
