March 8, 2013 Dear Parents/Guardians, The Prairieview Student
Council’s purpose is to support the Prairieview community. All
third and fourth graders are given the opportunity to join the
student council by submitting an application explaining their
interest in being a member. Responsibility is one of the most
important life skills of student council members, and students show
that responsibility by planning and running many school wide
events. Two programs the student council participates in year round
are recycling and running the PV General Store. These programs
instill real life skills such as responsibility with fulfilling
their individual “jobs”, counting money, informing the school
community of upcoming events/fundraisers, and communicating with
the student body. In the fall, we focused on recycling, opening the
PV General Store, helping to promote Red Ribbon Week, held a canned
food drive, ran a school-wide literary Presidential Election, and
organized a Valentine Candy Gram Sale . These activities required
effort, perseverance, and integrity showing that all students can
be responsible citizens. For the remainder of the year, the
Prairieview Student Council will continue to model and promote the
life skills. One activity we are currently planning is a
school-wide book drive that may include an author visit. This year,
the proceeds earned by Student Council will be given back to the
Prairieview Community as well as other organizations. Fifty percent
of the proceeds from the Candy Gram sale will be donated to Ann and
Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. Our school continues to work
toward creating an outdoor learning environment and Student Council
is working to raise funds for this goal. As always, students are
also rewarded for displaying all of the qualities and
characteristics of productive citizens, including respect,
responsibility, caring, cooperation, honesty and trustworthiness.
It is the goal of Student Council to instill these characteristics
not only in its members, but also the Prairieview Community at
large. We hope that they take their life skills with them outside
of the school community and into their everyday lives. Thank you
for your support! The Prairieview Student Council
