Dear Families and Friends of Carl Sandburg High School:

The interesting weather made for an unusual and challenging start to the New Year and the beginning of our second semester. Students, staff, and parents did a great job“weathering” the cancellations and delays in beginning our second semester. We sincerelyappreciate everyone’s support, patience, and commitment as we eventually were able tosuccessfully transition into our spring calendar. January was filled with the start of freshacademic experiences for students and staff, winter sporting events, and an exciting arrayof co-curricular activities to provide many venues to showcase our students’ talents andachievements. In the midst of acclimating to our second semester, we have also begunplanning for the 2014-2015 school year.

January was a time to review curriculum and courses with our students as they updatedtheir four-year plans and developed course schedules for next school year. We began themonth with our Curriculum Fair which enabled our current freshmen, sophomores, andjuniors to experience a flavor of the many, many electives Sandburg has to offer.Involvement in Curriculum Fair, meetings with guidance counselors, strategic activitiesoffered during Advisory, and a review of the 2014-2015 Course Selection Guide enabledour freshmen, sophomore, and junior students to fully prepare for the registration process.

We are in the midst of completing course registrations for current students. We ended the month of January with an Eighth Grade Open House to welcome the Class of 2018and their families to Sandburg to begin the registration process. Incoming freshmen willregister for courses on Saturday, February 1. Once we have completed registration, theprocess of determining the number of sections for each course to be offered next year willbegin. As we utilize students’ course selections and designated alternate courses to makethis determination, our expectation is student requests were informed decisions utilizingthe provided Sandburg resources and conversations between students and their families.Course verification letters, which will indicate the classes making up your child’s schedulefor the next school year, will be sent to families in April. Any changes to those requestsmust be made prior to April 30th as this information is used to develop our Master CourseSchedule in May.

Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for March 13th between the hours ofnoon and 8:00 pm. These brief appointments provide parents, students, and families an opportunity to touch base with teachers regarding academic progress, or questions/concerns with respect to student performance. Regular use of the Skyward Family Access portal provides current information regarding grades, assignments, absences, anddiscipline and may render a face-to-face conference unnecessary. Information regardingparent-teacher conference scheduling is located within this newsletter and posted on theSandburg website.

We are currently making plans for our April testing of current freshmen, sophomores, andjuniors. On April 23 and 24, juniors will be administered the Prairie State AchievementExam, which will be administered for the last time this spring. This two-day exam includesthe ACT test, a WorkKeys exam, and the State Board of Education’s science assessment. The ACT test administered to juniors WILL NOT include the writing component of the ACT.As some universities require the writing assessment, students and families should exploreinformation regarding a national administration of the ACT exam. This information wasprovided to students or can be accessed through our Guidance Office. Beginning in thespring of 2015, public high schools are scheduled to administer a new assessment knownas the PARCC assessment (Partnership for Assessment for Readiness of College andCareers). More information regarding PARCC can be found at www.parcconline.org.

I continue to encourage you to stay involved with Sandburg via our website, Portable PepBoard, and Skyward Family Access. The most efficient way to communicate questions orsuggestions is by emailing me at [email protected].

Sincerely,Dr. Julia Wheaton, Principal

News From The Nurse’s OfficeWHAT YOU CAN DO TO AVOID INFLUENZA...

AVOID CLOSE CONTACT – Avoid close contact with people who are

sick. When you are sick, avoid contact with others to protect them

from getting sick.

STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK – Stay home from work,

school, or day care when you are sick. You will help others from

catching your illness.

COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE – Use a tissue to cover your

mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, it will help to prevent

others from getting sick.

WASH YOUR HANDS – Washing your hands often will help protect

you from germs.

AVOID TOUCHING YOUR EYES, NOSE OR MOUTH – Germs are

often spread when a person touches things that are contaminated

with germs and then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Other ways to stay healthy during flu season and all year round:

● Get plenty of sleep

● Exercise regularly

● Manage your stress level

● Drink plenty of fluids

● Eat healthful foods

These guidelines are recommended by the Center for Disease

Control and Prevention.

National Honor Society adopted a 4th grade

class from Barnard Elementary School for

Secret Santa. The kids were excited to

receive the gifts, and our NHS students

enjoyed reading through the Santa letters and

providing the gifts. Though some of their

wishes were a bit extravagant such as: world

peace, cure for cancer, or a new bike, our

kids did the best they could to accommodate

them.

News From The Deans’ OfficeSandburg welcomes our new Orland Park Police School Resource

Officer, Scott Shuster. Officer Shuster has been an officer with the

Orland Park Police Department for 8 years. He spent the previous

three school years teaching DARE at Century and Jerling Junior High.

Sandburg High School is appreciative of the Orland Park Police for

their ongoing support and cooperation in maintaining a safe learning

environment for all of our students.

Cell Phones

Students have been reminded that cell phone use during the school

day is allowed during lunch periods in the Cafeteria only. Cell phones

may not be used at any other times or locations without the permission

of a supervising teacher.

Students are also reminded to please go to the nurse's office in case

of illness. Students that go home ill must do so through the nurse's

office. Our nurse's office may be contacted directly at 671-3118.

Spring Parent Teacher ConferencesParent Teacher Conferences are scheduled to be held on

Thursday, March 13 from noon until 8 PM

This is a great opportunity to discuss with the teacher how your student is performing

within a curriculum and communicate face-to-face ways to work on skill deficiencies.

We will be using Skyward Family

Access to schedule appointments for

spring conferences. Scheduling an

appointment with the teachers you would

like to meet is easy and can be accom-

plished in one of two ways. The preferred

format is to schedule your appointments

using Skyward Family Access. Online

parent sign-up will be available from

Thursday, March 6 at 9 AM and will

remain open through March 11 at 4 PM.

Phone-in scheduling will be available

Thursday, March 6 from 9 AM - 3 PM

and Friday, March 7 from 9 AM - 3 PM.

The link will be available in Skyward

Family Access on March 6. Step-by-step

instructions will be emailed to you as well

as posted on the school’s website.

The Nurse’s Office has encountered some problems with

the procedures that are taking place between parents

and students when a student is ill and needs to be picked

up from school.

There are times when students are sick during the school day

and are in contact with their parents via cell phone making

arrangements to go home. The problem arises when the

Nurse’s Office is not aware that arrangements are in place

between the parent and student for them to go home. The

school policy states “a student who becomes ill during the

school day should report to the Nurse’s Office”. If your child

texts you or calls you, please make sure that they report to

the Nurse’s Office immediately. The Nurse can evaluate them

and expedite their release to you when you arrive. Our pri-

mary concern is the health and safety of our students here at

Carl Sandburg High School. When a parent arrives at the

school and the child is not in the Nurse’s Office and the nurse

is not aware that the child is ill, there will be a delay before

your child is released to you.

February 28 Day Challenge

In an effort to beat the winter doldrums

and always maintain a positive school

climate Carl Sandburg High School will

once again be conducting the February

28 Day Challenge. Each day during the

month of February, students will be asked

to complete a "Random Act of Kindness".

Individual students and Advisory classes

will be rewarded for their participation.

as he had their undivided attention. Carl Sandburg

High School was shown in the video as the back

drop to a news story identifying four of our students,

including footage from Justina’s funeral, whose lives

were tragically cut short. To see students come up

National Honor Society adopted a 4th grade

class from Barnard Elementary School for

Secret Santa. The kids were excited to

receive the gifts, and our NHS students

enjoyed reading through the Santa letters and

providing the gifts. Though some of their

wishes were a bit extravagant such as: world

peace, cure for cancer, or a new bike, our

kids did the best they could to accommodate

them.

Spring Parent Teacher ConferencesParent Teacher Conferences are scheduled to be held on

Thursday, March 13 from noon until 8 PM

This is a great opportunity to discuss with the teacher how your student is performing

within a curriculum and communicate face-to-face ways to work on skill deficiencies.

We will be using Skyward Family

Access to schedule appointments for

spring conferences. Scheduling an

appointment with the teachers you would

like to meet is easy and can be accom-

plished in one of two ways. The preferred

format is to schedule your appointments

using Skyward Family Access. Online

parent sign-up will be available from
