Inadditiontoprovidingaccesstothesenewdevelopments,thegoaloftheprojectwastocreate apedestrianfocusedenvironmentto“activateandconnect”SecondStreetwithintheCity’s overall frameworkandtoreinforcetheurbanindustrialcharacterofthiscorridor .Thecorridor alsopresentedopportunitiestotellthestoryofthehistoryoftheRiverMarket’sdevelopmentas wellasexpandonthestoryoftheTownofKansas,theoriginalsettlementontheriverthatgrew intoKansasCitythroughinterpretiveelements. Inconjunctionwithrecentredevelopmentefforts,thecreationofplazasandtheintroduction ofpublicarthavebroughtresidents,employees,andvisitorstothestreetandactivatedthis northernedgeoftheRiverMarketneighborhood.Thedesignembracestheindustrialcharacter ofthearea.Hoodedpedestrianlightsreectthosehistoricallylocatedoverdockdoors.Steelpost andcablerailingsseparatedocksfromsidewalks.MassivesteelI-Beamsareplacedthroughout thecorrido rtoserveasbenchesandare contrastedb ycolorfulnati veplantin gsanddecora tive pavingtocreatecomfortablepedestrianzones.Thestreetscapedesignalsointegratespublic artworkandaunique“lightwall”featureplacedalongtheedgeofanexistingpowersubstation.
