Bombardier Learjet has contracted with Wichita State University’s National
Institute for Aviation Research to form a partnership in developing its new all-
composite Learjet 85 business jet.
Due to the economic downturn, Cessna Aircraft announced in April that it would
lay off an additional 1,300 Wichita employees in addition to the previously
announced cuts of 4,000. In addition, some salaried employees will be laid off by
mid-June. At the end of June, a four-week furlough will take place. Also, the
Cessna Columbus project will be suspended until the market improves.
In April, Bombardier Learjet announced a second round of layoffs in Wichita,
bringing the total number of expected job reductions to 820.
Hawker Beechcraft announced layoffs of 2,300 employees for 2009.
Boeing Wichita has announced a local work force reduction of 800 jobs.
In response to the current aircraft manufacturing environment, Spirit Aerosystems
will cut about 75 independent contractors in the Wichita area.

1st Qtr: employment stands at 31,967; down 2.7 percent from fourth quarter 2008;
down 0.4 percent from first quarter 2008.

Taxable Retail Sales
4th Qtr 2008: nominal taxable retail sales stand at $2.23 billion; down 0.5 percent
from third quarter 2008; up 1.5 percent from fourth quarter 2007.
4th Qtr 2008: real taxable retail sales stand at $1.04 billion; up 2.4 percent from
third quarter 2008; down 0.1 percent from fourth quarter 2007.
4th Qtr 2008: nominal tax collections stand at $117.9 million; down 0.5 percent
from third quarter 2008; up 1.5 percent from fourth quarter 2007.
4th Qtr 2008: real tax collections stand at $55.4 million; up 2.4 percent from third
quarter 2008; down 0.1 percent from fourth quarter 2007.

year in a row, of more than 1.6 million travelers. This represented a 1.4 percent
increase over 2007.

The Wichita Area Technical College has experienced an increased enrollment as a
result of local layoffs.
The Medical Practice Association, comprised of the full-time faculty of the
University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita’s departments of Family and
Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine and
Public Health and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, has purchased 105 acres
on the northeast corner of K-96 and Greenwich Road.
