The boroughs were seeking an alternative means of disposal for their domestic and commercial waste, as the landfill sites they were using were reaching capacity and costs were expected to rise

South-East London Combined Heat and Power Limited is l in the London Borough of Lewisham. The plant is fired by municipal solid waste (MSW) collected by the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich, as well as waste from other sources. Being only six miles from Hyde Park Corner, it is an accessible disposal point for waste generated throughout Central London. Now commissioned and in full operation, the plant generates about 30MW of electricity, enough to power about 50,000 homes.

The project started in 1986, as an initiative by the three boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham, and Southwark.

. In 1988, they formed a consortium to promote their ideas and bring together both public and private interests. The consortium members included the three boroughs, the Regional Electricity Company, and waste-to- energy design, construction and operation companies.

? Reduced requirements for landfill space. ? Reduced emissions of "greenhouse" gases caused by the landfilling of raw waste. ? Secure long-term waste disposal arrangements for the local councils, dealing with the waste close to where it arises. ? Generation of 30MW of electricity from a renewable source, enough for 50,000 homes. ? The potential to supply a district heating network serving 7,500 homes, thereby eliminating the emissions from 6 fossil-fueled boiler plant. ? The recovery of 20,000 te/year of ferrous metal for recycling. ? The creation of 50 jobs for full-scale operations, plus over 250 jobs during construction.

Earthship, Michael Reynolds.

Concept: The idea is to build a house out of everyday trash type items (soda cans, tires, bottles) and it is a self sustainable environment. It creates it's own power, collects and recycles it's water and even grows food. An Earthship has food production as core to its design. It uses greywater planters inside to create an all-year growing season and be being inside and thus warmer it is possible to grow a broader range of fruits. This extends the remit of what a house should ‘do’ – it is not just about shelter and comfort, but food too. The concept of the low-tech shelter made from local materials and with the ability to withstand a force-nine earthquake. As Reynolds points out, ‘We’re running out of oil. We know that in the future we’re rendering this planet damn near uninhabitable. So as we move towards that we’re trying to devise a method of living that allows people to take care of themselves.’

Water harvesting, three main components: roof, gutter and storage area. The system simply allows people to adapt standard plastic bottles to an existing gutter system to collect rain water. Also includes an attachment that allows people to create running water to wash their hands.

, By helping them relieve the

monetary burden in an essential area like access to clean water, people will have more economic flexibility to start address unmet needs in other areas.
