4 Power module installation4.1 Mechanical installation
CLMD03 Power Module must be f ixed VERTICALLY so as to allow airf low
circulation (see blue arrows in the figure below).
C LMD03 POWER MODULE mus t be fixed o n a rigid pla te/frame w ith four M6 sc rew s ,
nuts and washers (not provided).
Make sure that the rigidity of the support and the screws are sufficient to bear the weight(a bo ut 9 kg ) of t he C LMD03 P OWER MODULE(s).
CLMD03 POWER MODULE can be mounted in 2 different positions: totally inside its
enclosure or partly external to the enclosure as illustrated at the next page.
Clearances : 25 mm to wa lls a nd fla nge to fla nge be twee n modules.

The ca pac itor of the power mod ule must b e locate d ina specific air duct (vertical row) with forced ventilation(refer to4.2 Airflow a nd co oling req uirement)withcylindrical links vertical.
The othe r co mpone nts of the CLMD03 POWER
MODULE (co ntac tor, fuses , discha rge resisto r andca bles) must b e co oled with forced a ir co oling a s w ell.
Rules of goo d prac tice:
When reactors are used they should be placed in sucha wa y that they do not rad iate heat d irectly on theca pa citors. A thermal barrier is recommend ed

Cylinders must not be heated by external source ofheat.
A clearanc e d ista nce o f minimum 25 mm must berespected between the cylinders and the wall.
Inside the enc los ure, the other compo nents o f the
CLMD03 P OWER MODULE (co ntac tor, fuse, discha rgeresistor and cables) must also be cooled with forced aircooling (refer to4.2 Airflow a nd c oo ling req uirement)
4.2 Airflow and cooling requirementThe service conditions specified in the IEC 608311 4 are applicable.
As per IEC 60831-1 3.21, the ambient temperature for capacitors is the
temperature around t he capacitors itself and not around the cubicle.

Air should flow from the bo ttom to the top of the c ubicle a s illustrated onthe oppo site picture.
One fan per 6 PMOD03 columns blowing a minimum air flow of 420 m/h isrequested.
Design guideline:
Difference be twe en a mbient temperature outs ide the c ubicle a ndmea sured temperature must be lower than 22.5 C. To meet tha treq uirement, the temperature probe must b e loca ted a t a bo ut 2/3 of the a irduct, a ttac hed to the ce ntra l cylinder of the CLMD03 POWER MODULE, asper (1) of present drawing.

5 CommissioningWith the eq uipment isolate d from the supply, che ck:
Cabling is properly connected (including earth)
Ambient ventila tion is a deq uate
Correct tightness of the co nnections
6 OperationThe C LMD03 P OWER MODULE ca pa c itor unit is de livered w ith fac tory-ins ta lled
disc harge resistors to comply with IEC 60831 a nd a llow a dec rea se of the residua l
volta ge to less than 50V a fter 1 min. disc onnec tion from supply.
During o peration, ma ke sure the de la y be fore the CLMD03 is re-energized is not s horter
than 40 sec. Failure to follow this rule may cause damage and reduce the lifetime of the
capacitor.
Like other standard capacitor units, CLMD03 POWER MODULE discharge
devices are not suitable for use with rapid switc hing rates like thyristor
switc hed banks (minimum off time: 40 sec).
Additional external resistors are not a solution for such cases. Only specially designed
capacitors must be used in such applications. Please contact ABB.
Installation of capacitors on networks disturbed by harmonics may require special
preca utions e spec ia lly w hen there is a risk of resonanc e phenomena. P lea se ensure that
your installation is as per the over current rating as per IEC 60831 Standard. Please
co ntac t ABB for technica l support.
