I spent my internship with the company McKula Inc.. Based out of
Norvelt, Pennsylvania McKula Inc. offers various services such as;
Search Engine Optimization, Sharepoint/Office365, Websites,
Incident Tracker, and Custom Software. Search Engine Optimization
means optimizing someones site so it has a higher chance to appear
at the top of a search engine when someone has searched for certain
keywords. McKula Inc. constantly creates websites, whether they be
custom entirely or from one of their prebuilt templates. Sometimes
clients provide a template. Incident Tracker is a product that they
offer. It essentially is just software companies/universites use to
do exactly what its name say; Track Incidents that occur within
their company/university. They also will do any custom coding you
need or even make any custom software you desire. I did not get a
chance to touch or even look into their Sharepoint/Office365
services. They have one man who mainly does all of that. Going into
this internship I thought that their only service was Custom
Websites, boy was I wrong! This internship was truly eye-opening
for me. Mainly cause they allowed me to see every aspect of their
business. Not just the design side, but all that actual business
such as; pricing, meetings, talking to clients 1 on 1, and so much
more! I knew a lot of this existed within our industry but I have
never had a more hands on in your face experience with it. I
enjoyed so much; whether it be getting to sit right beside their
developers and ask questions as they do custom work or even to
working directly with a client 1 on 1. At times though, it seemed
like the organization of whose in charge of what could become a
little blurry. By that I mean every seems to have to be flexible to
help each other and not just focused on their duty. Is that really
that bad? No not really I suppose. I would recommend this to other
students but not every student. They would need to have more then
basic knowledge in print and web. Considering the company is
obviously leading more towards the web side of the industry means
that the student would need to be more on that side of the
spectrum.
Honestly my biggest strength for this internship was my
knowledge of the print-side of our industry. No one at McKula Inc.
seemed to have any more then the basic knowledge of it, if that! So
I was able to offer very strong opinions when their clients wanted
print work. My supervisors liked this so much that we started doing
all kinds of print work for their clients. Like postcards, business
cards, and more! I was able to teach a few things to them also
while

I was there. My biggest weakness though was kindve bad. I did
not go into this internship with enough knowledge of web
development. Every minute it felt like I was learning some-thing
knew in web design. But now, at the end of the internship, I am
coming out of school with not only a large amount of knowledge in
print design but also web design. So this in-ternship could not
have worked out any better. It was truly an amazing internship. Oh,
and I also had to work almost exclusively with other
workers/interns. So that was something I got to experience and it
was truly a blast!
I got to design/make everything from postcards, to shipping
labels, to buttons on websites, to layouts, to cutsheets/flyers,
and more. It was always a surprise when I came in to McKula Inc. on
what I would be doing that day. And I loved it. I feel my time
management was very well. I always met my deadlines, actually
always got it done way before them. I feel my work was excellent
quality mainly because if someone wasnt satisfied I would not send
out the design until I met everyones expectations. Or atleast as
close as I could get. I honestly think I made an impact onto McKula
Inc. by showing them that they could easily offer their clients
more print services, even if they had to outsource it. This could
lead to them making more profit in the long run. And they started
to take advantage of this.
