LEAGUE NEWS

Clubs will have been circulated about the Non-League Groundsman of the Year scheme. The completed application forms issued to clubs earlier this month need to be returned to the League Secretary as soon as possible as the closing date for receipt with the FA is Friday 13 March. Good luck to any club that enters the

competition. The League are sad to have to announce the passing of Ted Walters a former Referees Appointment Secretary who served the game for many years before retirement. Condolences to family and friends at this sad time, He is shown here when AFC Stoneham collected their Kappa Respect Club of the Month award in Division One for January 2018.See elsewhere for our obituary for him, RIP Ted.

One of our teams have missed out on progress in a local FA cup competition as they unfortunately used a player who had played for another team in the same competition- and have consequently been removed. It may seem a little late, but at this time of season it can be quite easy to lose track of who has played for who,

so hopefully it’s not too late to remind other clubs still involved in cup competitions to check now to avoid possible disappointment. Another of our clubs has fallen foul of a Food Standards Agency site visit recently, so again clubs are advised to please make sure all legal requirements and recommendations are adhered to over the handling of food- hot or cold. And finally within this section, clubs are also reminded that when they put a seven day approach in for a player it also needs to be done for dual registrations as well as transfers.

CLUB NEWS PART ONE

News from behind the scenes at Foxcotte Park, where Jamie Coleman has been appointed as First Team coach, effectively a role he has filled for most of the season- and Alex Thompson as goalkeeper coach. Danny Dolan has also been added to the Management team having had a short break after eight seasons at the helm for Tadley Calleva. Also on the Managerial front, we hear that New Milton Town have parted company with first team Manager Nigel Green, who the club wish to thank for the time and effort put in, Paul Nineham will step up to the plate for the remainder of the season. Ringwood Town reported that their sit-on mower was stolen on Friday 3 January at around 04:45. If you see or hear anything about one being available to buy, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the club directly. Fareham Town are still looking for a Club Secretary. Experience would be a bonus but far more important is an attention to detail and the ability to work within time constraints. Come and join the friendly team at Cams Alders. The position is a voluntary one but expenses will be paid. Please apply to the Vice-Chair Dave Mundy via e mail [email protected] Joe Sutherden has moved from AFC Stoneham to Totton & Eling and on the milestone front, Nathan Lynch has now made 150 appearances for Hamble Club and with 108 goals, that’s some return.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORT

Greg Dickson writes AFC STONEHAM 1-1 SHOLING THE match was the inaugural game to be played at the new £10 million Stoneham Complex. The match went ahead despite the strong wind and driving rain across the pitch. Despite the conditions 226 brave souls ventured out for their football fix and a new ground ticked off. Most were packed into the stand while others had to try and shelter from the conditions. Ahead of the game a minute’s applause was held for the passing of former Sydenhams Wessex League Referees Appointment Secretary Ted Walters 24 hours earlier. First effort fell to Sholing when referee Foster awarded a free kick 25 yards out but the resulting kick sailed easily over the bar with the wind. AFC Stoneham were also struggling to cope with the wind as they saw their first effort go well. Ryan Gosney was the first keeper to be tested but held on to the ball well. Stuart Green was causing AFC Stoneham problems running at their defence but he saw his first two efforts go wide after he had done the hard work. A rare slip from Terry Cuthbertson nearly caught Sholing out but AFC Stoneham couldn’t capitalise on the mistake. Likewise Lee Wort was looking sharp up front but had a couple of efforts go wide, then his efforts were nearly rewarded but his goal bound shot hit the post. WORT eventually broke the deadlock on 39 minutes when he rifled his shot across Tom Parker-Trott the ball went in just inside the post however it hit the base stanchion and shot out, confusion reigned as the referee gave the goal but then consulted the assistant before awarding the opening goal. This kicked the game into life with AFC Stoneham squandering another chance when Tom Hogan should have equalised. Green thought he had doubled Sholing’s lead but again the upright saved Parker-Trott. HT 0-1 Players from both sides were a bit reluctant to come out for the 2nd half as the rain had become relentless. Dave Diaper made an immediate substitution replacing James Lauder with Jack Nicholas. Sholing continued to press for their second goal but the AFC Stoneham keeper was dealing well the movement of the ball caused

by the wind. Owen Royl was winning the midfield battles and Stuart Green was enjoying the space he was creating running at the AFC Stoneham defence but couldn’t force the important second goal. Jack Nicholas became referee Foster’s first booking this was quickly followed by AFC Stoneham’s captain Alex Welch and Matt Palmer. Mike Marsh and James Phillips made three changes bringing on Edu Jimenez, Charlie Rattley and James Parker-Trott for Matt Bainbridge, Manning and Hogan. Brad Targett got clear but hit his shot wide. Edu Jimenez injected some pace in to AFC Stoneham and the substitute robbed Cuthbertson but fired his shot across the face of Gosney’s goal. Owen Roundell gave away a free kick 35 yds out and collected a caution for his challenge but the resulting free kick sailed into the car park. Jimenez was causing the Sholing defence many problems and it was with eleven minutes remaining that JIMENEZ finally got AFC Stoneham’s equaliser when his shot moved in the air deceiving Gosney. Both sides continued to look for the winner but eventually the referee took the game to penalties. FT 1-1 So to the penalties Scott Hills put the ball past Gosney, then Green levelled it up. AFC Stoneham goal hero Jimenez stepped up and saw his spot kick saved by Gosney, then Gosney put Sholing in front with his 100% record of spot kicks this season. James Parker-Trott scored then Jake Hoole put Sholing back in front. Cal Laycock was the next AFC Stoneham scorer, Cuthbertson scored Sholing’s fourth. Rattley scored AFC Stoneham’s final penalty and it was left to Roundell to put Sholing into the quarter finals which he did despite the barracking of the home supporters slotting the ball past Tom Parker-Trott. Sholing now face AFC Bournemouth under-23s at home next Wednesday.

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

HAVING seen nearly a full programme of matches completed on Saturday it was probably too much to ask that we would enjoy the same in midweek and so it proved. Six matches scheduled for Tuesday – five postponed. Those lost were Verwood v Weymouth (Dorset Senior Cup), Andover New Street v Moneyfields and Bashley v Eastleigh (both Hampshire Senior Cup), Christchurch v Brockenhurst (Russell-Cotes Cup) and US Portsmouth v Horndean (Hampshire Senior Cup). The one game to survive was the Hampshire Senior Cup Third Round Tie between AFC Stoneham and Sholing, the first competitive fixture to be played on Stoneham’s new Ground and nearly marked with a historic win for the home side. It also attracted an attendance of 226 on a foul evening weather wise. Lee Wort put the visitors ahead before the break but an Edu Jiminez equaliser in the second half took the tie to penalties in which Sholing came out on top by the margin of five four. The win earns the Boatmen a home tie with AFC Bournemouth in the next round, A good night for Sholing, a proud night for Stoneham but a poor night for the Fixture Secretary and the various Cup Competitions. Despite some improvement as regards the weather there was still enough water around to wipe out Wednesday’s Southampton Senior Cup tie between Fawley AFC and Lymington Town and Thursday’s fixtures at US Portsmouth and Sholing in the Portsmouth and Southampton Senior Cups respectively. The final score for the three days was Football 1 Storm Brendan 8

THE “OTHER” SPURS

A look at another of the Clubs that left us to ply their trade elsewhere. FLEET SPURS were founded as relatively recently as 1948 and progressed via the Aldershot & District League and the Surrey Premier League to join the Hampshire League Division Three as Champions of the Aldershot League in 1991. In their first season they finished third behind Portsmouth Civil Service with the League also including such as AFC Aldermaston, Netley Victoria Athletic, Ecchinswell, Covies and Lansdowne. [Covies and Lansdowne were unknown to the writer. In most cases those reading this will have superior knowledge but on checking with Gary Day, whose knowledge of Hampshire Football is probably unrivalled, Covies changed their name to Farnborough North End in 1998 and of course competed in our League under that title. Lansdowne were based in Bournemouth and had only two seasons in the Hampshire League but played at two different grounds; Winton Recreation Ground and Slades Farm for those who know the area]. In 2004/05 they became members of the Wessex League joining what was then Division Three after the merger with the Hampshire League. Their opponents in that initial season included current members AFC Portchester, Hamble Club, Laverstock & Ford, Tadley Calleva and Verwood Town as well Micheldever, Ordnance Survey, Ludgershall Sports and Yateley Green. Colden Common were Champions come the end of the season, Fleet Spurs occupied seventeenth place and Yateley Green were bottom with a goal difference of minus 183. Both RS Basingstoke and DC (David Coleman) withdrew during the course of the season. Fleet Spurs remained in our League, mainly under the knowledgeable and affable Chairmanship of Bryan Shepherd, until the end of the 2016/17 but never played in the Premier Division. Their most successful season was in 2009/10 when they finished in third place in Division One and in their final season, they finished twelfth out of eighteen in the same Division. The Club’s aggregate record for the thirteen seasons with us reads as follows:-

PL W D L F A Pts 450 143 70 237 803 1049 499

The Club entered the FA Cup in seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13, going out to Shrewton United and Totton & Eling in the Extra Preliminary Round, and have entered the FA Vase every season since 2010/11 without ever passing the Second Qualifying Round. In 2013 the Club attracted the notice of the National Press when Tottenham Hotspur threatened legal action against them if they did not remove the Cockerel from their badge. Not only a sledgehammer to crack a nut but indicative of the manner in which Professional Football regards and treats the Grass Roots game. Their leaving of the Sydenhams League was not carried out as one would have wished. They approached the FA with a view to crossing to the Combined Counties League but were told their application was too late in accordance with FA Rules. A month later they were moved as per their wish! In their first two seasons in the Combined Counties Division One they finished 16th out of 19 and 17th out of 18 but are enjoying better fortune this time round and as this is written are in mid-table. We wish them well.

TED WALTERS

The League was very saddened to hear of the passing of Ted Walters who was a life member of 30 years with the League, a member of the Hampshire Football Association Council and Disciplinary Board. A life member of Southampton District Referee association and a huge influence in the development of so many referees in the south League Development Officer Bob Purkiss was a long-time friend of Ted’s and a neighbour for some years and has put together the following: - Ted played local football for Eastleigh Old Boys before becoming a referee. As with all referees he started in Junior Football before moving on to the Hampshire League and then the Western League, and when he reached Football League level at the age of forty, he was the first to achieve same at that age. He became Appointments Secretary for the Hampshire League and the Wessex League and served at one time as Assessors Secretary for the latter. He was always a stickler for the correct dress and behaviour, Tie at Board meetings and White laces for referees’ boots. As an Assessor he was always brutally honest but fair. If, as a referee, you asked him how you were getting on his answer was always the same - “If you ask me a question be prepared to accept the answer”. But he became a friend and mentor to many, many referees and some, who reached very high status in the refereeing world, would always recall and be grateful for his help and advice. One of his lesser known roles in the Football World was as Superintendent of Stewards at Wembley for Internationals and Cup Finals. I was one of his stewards and one cup final (Everton) he asked me to go along in his place and say I was him. This I did and nobody batted an eyelid – though we were hardly similar in looks or build! He had influence! Ted was something of a legend in the Refereeing world and stories and tales are numerous. In our Newsletter last week Rudi Burton described being approached by this chap in a flat cap and glasses at the end of his second game in the middle with the words “Do you know what running the diagonal is because it does not look like it”. That was Rudi’s introduction to Ted, and they became firm friends over the years. Our President, Dennis Challis, was already high on the refereeing ladder in the Football Combination when he moved to the area and contacted Ted as regards officiating locally. Ted’s first question was “can you referee “and “I will give you a game this week”. The game was between Hedge End and West End and, unknown to Dennis, was a local derby of the highest order. In the course of the game there was a fracas on the touchline which caused play to be stopped. When order had been restored a “small man in a bobble hat” came on to the pitch and was informed by Dennis that he “could leave the pitch as well”. At the end of the game the man in the bobble hat approached Dennis again with the words “not bad, not bad”. On enquiring as to who he was Dennis discovered he had met Ted Walters! (Seemingly not bad, not bad was classed as high praise from Ted). recently Ted attended a Sydenhams match at the start of last season, saw Dennis and asked him where the referee was from. Dennis did not know which produced the remark “why not, you’ve got a handbook”. When told we no longer had handbooks the reply was “Whatever next” which spoke volumes. Teds whole life was football and after retiring from Fords, where he was a toolmaker, he repaid Doreen, his wife, for all the years of support she gave him, by moving down to France to live near me. He took up Line Dancing and Bee keeping and was very critical of local French football played on a Sunday afternoon.

After Doreen passed away two years ago, he reluctantly came back to Southampton and would come out with me to League matches, still as critical as ever over standards and values (or lack of as he would articulate). Ted was a character who did an awful lot of work for Football in the County over

many years and was responsible for the advancement of many referees. Football is poorer without him. Our condolences go to his family and friends, and his memories will stay with many of us for ever. Bob Purkiss MBE

RAISING AWARENESS AND REPORTING DISCRIMINATION

Last Friday the FA launched a new anti-discrimination campaign, aimed at raising awareness of how and why you should report any instance of discrimination. While incidents of discrimination in grassroots football are rising, we understand people may not be confident in the process of how to report them. With Tell us, we’ll tackle it, we are updating and simplifying the reporting process to make it quicker and easier to report issues of discrimination in grassroots football. The campaign will re-confirm The FA’s zero tolerance stance to discrimination in the grassroots game. The new reporting process will be available at the same time as the campaign, which encourages people to report incidents at www.TheFA.com/TellUs.

CLUB NEWS PART TWO

Sad news has come to our attention from Hamworthy United who are sorry to have to inform fans and supporters of changes that they’re having to undertake due to difficult circumstances away from the club itself. The health situations of Chairman Steve Harvey and Club Secretary Kevin Keets have been well documented, and over this season they have been at the forefronts of minds at the Specsavers County Ground. However, it has reached a point where both Steve and Kevin are looking to take a step back from their roles to focus on their health and recoveries. The club will always be in debt to the levels of commitment and drive that both Steve and Kevin have bought to the Club, and on behalf of the League we wish them both well. In response to these decisions the club have moved swiftly to appoint Steve Mitchener as the new club Chairman, with club President Bruce Scammell returning to more hands-on activities. There will be more updates and news on club positions over the coming weeks. Steve Mitchener commented: “Steve Harvey has driven this club forward over the last few seasons, both on and off the pitch, and I can’t emphasise enough how much we will feel his absence." "Serious illness has also robbed us of the services of Kevin Keets, who has been an amazing secretary in his short time with us. Kevin almost pioneered the electronic age of being a football secretary. We will miss his enthusiasm and efficiency, but most of all his company. I send my best wishes and thanks to both Steve and Kevin. There can’t be too many successful organisations that lose the services of a Chairman and Secretary at the same time but, sadly, that is the case for us."

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes LYMINGTON TOWN 5-2 TADLEY CALLEVA THIS was the proverbial game of two halves with all the scoring coming in a breathless second half. In the first period the game was not without chances but neither goalkeeper had a direct save to make. Lymington are in a rich vein of form with only one defeat in their last 9 League games and they had the first chance when Mickey Finch shot wide. But Tadley went straight down the other end and Brad Neal should have scored from a corner with a free header. The nearest either side came to scoring in the first half came on 10 minutes when Finch picked up a long cross from Harvey Elsom and his shot come lob glanced off the top of the cross bar before going over. As the game developed both sides had chances but shots were wayward and neither keeper was troubled. HT 0-0

Tadley opened the second half well and on 48 minutes they took the lead through Nick BIGNALL. The striker got on the end of a through pass but his first touch looked heavy. However he arrived at the ball at the same time as Lymington keeper Rian Drake (a late change after a warm up injury to Ross Casey), and the ball rebounded into the net following the tackle between the two players. Shortly after Tadley nearly doubled their lead when Brad Gale shot just wide. The goal sparked the home side into life and they equalised just after the hour mark. Callum Davies picked out Lymington substitute Sam House and as he moved

onto the through ball, he was taken down by Tadley keeper Jack Martin. HOUSE stepped up to take the penalty which Martin saved but the ball rebounded to the striker who converted at the second attempt. Five minutes later Lymington were ahead from a free kick awarded just outside the penalty area. Finch's low strike was parried by keeper Martin but again he was unlucky with the rebound as it went straight to Ali ZINTANY who scored from close range. On 66 minutes Lymington made it three as Dom FALCO was allowed to turn in the penalty area. His shot was mishit but it completely wrong footed Martin and trickled into the corner of the net. Goals were now raining in and in the space of sixty seconds both sides scored in the 79th minute. First NEAL followed up on a Bignall shot to put Tadley back into the game at 3-2 but that did not last long as Lymington went straight up the other end and HOUSE scored his second with a header from a corner. Finally on 84 minutes HOUSE completed his hat trick scoring from close range at the second attempt. FT 5-2

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 29

Mike Robins writes RINGWOOD TOWN 3-3 HYTHE & DIBDEN DING-DONG battle at the Macra Community Stadium with a hard fought draw the probably deserved outcome. But early indicators pointed towards an away win. Despite Ringwood’s Joe Manley having two great chances inside the first five minutes, one of which I am not sure how he contrived to put over the bar- it was the visitors who took a seventh minute lead when Cain PRENTICE found himself unmarked inside the goal area at the Allotments End and stooped to head the ball home from an Owen Fee free kick. At the other end, Manley had another chance to restore parity before Hythe extended their lead. Prentice again involved- this time as provider when his delivery was swept home by Beng’yela NGWA from close range. In quite an even first half, the hosts got a goal back with a couple of first half minutes left when Ben HARRIS worked an opening and fired home despite the best efforts by Josh Cotton. HT 1-2 Early pressure from Ringwood almost brought an equaliser when Ryan Hamm headed a corner just wide of the upright, but the goal did come ten minutes in when HARRIS beat Cotton with a fine strike from the edge of the penalty area. However just before the hour mark, the visitors got their noses in front again when Sam FLOYD was allowed too much space and made a 30 yard run unchallenged run into the penalty area before picking his spot from close to the penalty spot to put them 3-2 ahead. Tempers were a little frayed with some pretty poor behaviour from both camps that did little to enhance the spectator experience. Spells of pressure at both ends failed to produce another goal until the 77th minute when HARRIS completed his hat trick with perhaps the pick of the bunch- with a strike from distance that gave Cotton no chance. The hosts had the bit between their teeth and nearly grabbed all the points in the dying moments when a chance flashed wide of the mark. FT 3-3

reduced programme but perhaps not as bad as feared given the weather in the week and the League’s thanks to those Clubs who were able to make their pitches playable. It was top versus bottom in the Premier Division and Amesbury came out with some credit to add to

their two recent wins by holding the leaders for seventy minutes before going down by three goals to nil. Ollie Dennett scored twice for Alresford, making it five in two games, as they stayed three points clear of their closest challengers AFC Stoneham. The Eastleigh based Club marked the first League game in their new surroundings with win over Baffins Milton Rovers with Scott Hills and Will Wiseman the marksmen in their two nil victory, their eighth win in a row. Hamble Club are third after a four two win over Cowes Sports and if Hamble score inevitably Nathan Lynch’s name will be mentioned and he did not disappoint with two goals to his name. Jamie Wykes scored both goals for the visitors but it is their conceding too many that is the problem. Horndean continued their recent fine run by scoring four without reply at Shaftesbury – two goals for Mark Smith – and are now in fourth place while Lymington stay in the top six after a five two home win over Tadley. All the goals came in the second half with the visitors opening the scoring before a Sam House hat trick helped the home side to take all three points. Bashley, as prophesied in the Preview (just occasionally we get something right), attracted the largest attendance of the day – one hundred and sixty two – and the majority will have enjoyed the four one win over Portland with Lewis Ross scoring twice. The Dorset side have hit a bad patch, not helped by injuries and have slipped in to the lower half of the table. Finally, Hamworthy United, with events off the field no doubt having a sad effect, lost three one at home to Fleet Town who no doubt enjoyed their long journey home. In Division One the top match between leaders US Portsmouth and Andover New Street fell foul of the weather and the other Clubs in the promotion race took the chance to improve their position. Goals from Ben Smith and Robbie Owen gave Downton victory over Verwood at Wick Lane and a lone goal, a Phil Moore penalty, gave Alton the points against Andover Town in a game where, on the day, both sides lacked any real threat in front of goal. Hythe & Dibden shared the points in a six goal thriller at Ringwood – a hat trick for the home side’s Ben Harris – and there was a similar scoreline on the Island after a superb comeback by Romsey Town. Two goals from Connor Kelly helped Newport in to a three goal lead before Liam Magee scored twice in the final ten minutes to give his side a well-earned point. In the only other game completed in the Division Follands narrowly failed to build on last week’s win with a very late goal giving Laverstock & Ford a three two victory and the points. Russell Jones scored twice for the visitors with Krystie Sullivan and Jake King on the mark for the Planemakers. At the end of the shortened, but still interesting day, Alresford still lead AFC Stoneham by three points, though the latter have games in hand, and four points cover the top five Clubs in Division One. US Portsmouth lead Downton on goal difference with Alton, Hythe & Dibden and Andover New Street in close pursuit. And there are suggestions that the weather is going to be much improved over the coming week.
