Assembly 30th November– Leaving Certificates

Just a reminder to all parents that if your child is in year PP-5 and is leaving our school at the end of the year they will be presented with a Leaving Certificate at the Assembly on the 30th November. If you haven’t yet told us that your child is leaving could you please advise the office as soon as possible so that they won’t miss out on their certificate.

Surveyor Wanted!

If you are a Surveyor and have a few spare hours to donate to the school could you please contact the office. We have a Landscape Architect parent who is willing to put a grounds plan together for us but requires ground levels and elevations to do this properly.

Coat hangers

Mr Emery is in need of at least 60 coat hangers for our new interschool shirts. If you have any spare could you please bring them into the office.

Congratulations

A very big congratulations to Paul Emery and his wife Lorna, who had a healthy baby boy on Monday the 12th November!

Warm Regards,

Jenni Chittick

Principal

Booklists for 2019 We have a new booklist supplier for 2019 with improved savings for parents. Ziggies is our new supplier and the 2019 Booklists will be sent home with students next week, booklists will also be available online should they be misplaced.

If you prefer to fill in the paper form please ensure that your completed form is received in the office by 30 November for collection and processing by Ziggies staff. If you wish to order online you have until 16 December at https://booklists.ziggies.net.au. The cut off date for free home delivery or bookshop collection is 16 December 2018. Orders placed after 16 December will incur a home delivery charge.

The P&C advised that parents wanted to see what came home prior to placing their new orders, in order to facilitate this we have pushed back the last day of ordering which in turn pushed back the school bookshop day. The Bookshop Collection day is 29 January 2019 from 2.30pm to 4pm.

Please note that Kindy is the only year that the Bulk Excursion amount can be paid via the booklist. For PP to Year 6 students this amount can only be paid via the office. Each year any unused Bulk Excursion value is held in credit, as each student may have a different amount in credit we are unable to include this on the booklists.

All ABoard! The latest update from the School Board

This is, as ever, an exciting (and quite possibly overwhelming) time of year for everyone. The board is no exception with a ramping up this term to three meetings to cover the budget, NAPLAN results and our AGM. The latter is next week and, in my final days as board chair, I extend an invitation to everyone in the school community to attend - 7.30am Wednesday 5 December in Miss Kingston’s room. On the quietly mentioned note of final days, I’d like to say how much I have revelled in a role that has been a privilege. Three years as chair has afforded me the opportunity to be witness to the remarkable skills and talents of our school executive team led by Jenni and increase my admiration for all that they do for this school and our children. With equal revelling and admiration for what I know he will bring to the role, I am delighted to introduce your new board chair, Tim Grey-Smith.

Hello from your new board chair

Hi all, my name is Tim Grey-Smith and I’ll be your board chair for 2019, taking over from the very capable Nancy Clarke who will be retiring from the position (but thankfully staying on the board). For those who aren’t familiar with the board, it provides strategic support to the Principal and helps to shape the vision for the school. This is achieved through regular board meetings as well as helping with the development of the school’s Business Plan, policy review, supporting the Principal as required and engaging with other school stakeholders such as the P&C. It’s a privilege to be able to take on this role.

As chair, my main focus areas will be settling in to our new Business Plan, recruiting a community member to the board, and working on sustainability/carbon reduction strategies. As I work full-time in the city I won’t often be seen at drop-off or pick-up but you’ll see me at all major school events and assemblies, and feel free to wander over for a chat if there’s anything you’d like to raise. You can also reach me at [email protected] at any time.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Nancy for her incredible contribution to the role over the last three years. It has been a trying period for the school community with frequent Principal changes and she has carried out the role in a calm, organised, collaborative and determined fashion.

Looking forward to the year ahead,

Tim Grey-Smith, (not quite yet) Board Chair

Roman Forum Day at JCCA

Last week the Year 3 and 4 students were invited to visit the JCCA Year 7 STEM Roman Forum Day. The Year 7 students had worked in groups to research Ancient Roman Times and then prepared 19 activity stations to teach various aspects of Roman History to the East Fremantle students.

The East Fremantle Students worked in groups to rotate around the activities with the Year 7s leading them through engaging tasks. Topics such as Roman Numerals, Feasting, Mosaics, Games, Clothing, Gladiators to name a few, kept the students thoroughly entertained.

It was great to see some of our ex-students taking part in this event. Please read the recounts below to see how much our students enjoyed their time at JCCA.

Gladiators showing their skills Learning Roman Games Adding Mosaics to the Colosseum

On Friday, 23rd November 2018, the Year 3 and 4 students went to JCCA to participate in an excursion that had taken the Year 7s two terms to prepare. The excursion was all about Ancient Rome and its civilization.

There were nineteen stations and I was very impressed with all of them. I had a wonderful time at JCCA, and I’m sure everyone else did too. The Year 7s did such a good job. I think all the effort came to good result.

By Evie Grey-Smith.

On Friday, 23rd November, last week the Year 3s and 4s went on an extraordinary excursion to JCCA (John Curtin College of the Arts).

I learnt so many things while still having fun! We all dressed up in togas and brought along shields, helmets and swords. I thought the Year 7s did a great job. There were so many different stations.

By Hugh Wilkinson.

With 72% of 156 responses indicating that they would buy at least one faction t-shirt, the

process of sourcing faction t-shirts has now begun. The t-shirts will be polycotton and

printed with the sports logo.

On Fridays students will be allowed to wear these printed factions t-shirts (though not

any other faction-coloured t-shirt).

Note that this is optional - you are not required to buy a faction t-shirt and students can

still wear any appropriately coloured t-shirt to the swimming and athletics carnivals.

Faction T-Shirts Are Coming!

Transitioning from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for kids. Learning how to travel independently on pub-lic transport is one of many new experiences students will face.

If you have a child heading to high school next year, use the Get on Board website to help get them started using Transperth. Visit www.getonboard.transperth.wa.gov.au to find out more!

East Fremantle Primary School P&C 2018 - Round Up

“It takes a community.”

Our P&C is a community that helps support our students, teachers, parents and the wider community to thrive - and what a privilege this has been to do this in 2018.

We would like to start by thanking each and every parent, teacher and community member who has con-tributed in some way, small or large, towards the betterment of our school.

Just a few of our key successes this year;

We welcomed our new parents to the school with our welcome morning tea, we bought the waterslides back, we heroed our Dad’s with our annual Dad’s and Kids camp, we baked and sizzled up a storm with our bake sales and sausage sizzles, we let our hair down at our legendary quiz night, we harnessed the creativity of our favourite faces on our memorial tea towel and taught our kids mindfulness with our free

yoga program – and this all in our 120th year!

And, it is important to recognise WHY we do all of this. Our P&C funded the following in 2018;

- Interschool sports shirts $1238.50 - Kitchen garden staff $30,000 - Free Family Yoga $400 - New disc swing $9000 - Sporting awards and event $1100 - Graduation year 6 and student awards $4000 - Library books and resources $3500 - P&C awards at assemblies $500 - Discretionary fund for Principal to allocate to families experiencing financial hardship $1000 - Spare hats for sport, spare knickers for little accidents

Again, this is all possible because of our supportive community, BIG thanks to those that have managed and contributed to the P&C run initiatives;

- Uniform shop - lunch orders from John Curtin - School banking - Scholastic book orders - Coding club - Faction T-shirts (coming next year! Thanks for your votes!) - Parent Database - A NEW website (!) - streamlined documentation and procedures - made a new lost property procedure Finally, a big pat on the back to our class reps AND each and every parent (you!) that has made it through another year supporting your school by assisting in class, kitchen garden, the odd excursion and helped in class with multilit, science, engineering, music, reading and much, much more. We believe it takes a community to raise a child, and we are proud and happy to have been part of this amazing community in 2018.

The City of Fremantle has organised a free Futsal come and Try session at South Beach next Tuesday and I was hoping that the school or the P&C may be able to promote the session through the school newsletter or other communication channels.

Details of the event and registration can be found here - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/south-beach-futsal-fun-registration-51704791423?aff=erelexpmlt or https://www.facebook.com/events/246156172921616/

Otherwise a brief description of the event can be found below

What is Futsal?

It is a fast paced, dynamic, and enjoyable 5-a-side version of football (soccer) that caters for both male and female participants and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Futsal is usually played indoors but things are a little different here in Fremantle.

Come down and check out what Futsal is all about with the two free coaching sessions being hosted by the Fremantle Futsal Club. Open to everyone aged 5-15 years.

Many thanks
