Shraddha ThithisShraddha Thithis indicated are as per calculations to suit customs of
everybody.General rule for madhwas is Perform Ekadashi / Dwadashi shraddha
on Dwadashi observance day. Shraddha Thithis on Athiriktha Ekadashi andShravana Dwadashi days have to be performed on the Parane (next) day.
Sometimes Ekadashi shraddha thithi occurs on a Viddha / Dashami day,Dwadashi shraddha thithi on Ekadashi observance day. In both the cases, performing Shraddha on the Dwadashi parane day is the general rule.
One school of thought is that Ekadashi shraddha can be performed onsuch Dashami day. Some mutts do not agree with this contention. Concernedpersons may ascertain the date from their mutts/purohit.

A harmless small change in our routine is beneficial !Wiping out the water from the body, immediately after a bath – that too
face and head first is a general routine.Kali walks out of wet bodies. He reenters that part of body which is
first dry. Adharma devatha is the abhimani devatha of the back in the body.Hence it is preferable to allow him there. Therefore, after every bathwipe dry the back first.

BhadrapadaNakshatra Weekdaycombination’s phalais indicated as (+)
Paksha Masa starts from September 20 and ends on October 4
Muhurtha Raja
Nakshatra Weekday combination’s phala is useful as a simple Muhurtha toolas indicated by the name Muhurtha Raja. It is popularly used for Travel & suchsimple occasions.
This phala is indicated as (+) Plus & (–) Minus in front of the Nakshatra of theday in this Panchangam. Wherever, both + and – are given, the first sign isupto end of Nakshatra and the second sign is for the rest of the day. (eg. Swathi8:24 – + indicates – upto 8:24 and + afterwards). Only one sign is for the entireday (eg. Hastha 9:11 + indicates + for the whole day).
This phala is referred as Amrutha, Siddhi, . . . by other publications.
Current Day
For counting Impurity (Ashoucha) period due to Birth and Death the extent ofCurrent day (on the Day of occurance) is required. First 5/8 parts of the Rathrimana(night time - sunset to sunrise) is counted as part of the Current day and the rest asNext day. For a notional Sunrise of 6 am and Sunset of 6 pm, upto 1:30 am isconsidered as Current Day. This also means, the current day is from previous 1:30am.
However for Rajaswala (Menses) nirnaya, first 2/3 of the night time is consideredas part of current day, in which case 2:00 am would be the cutoff point.
Grahanas (Eclipses) during the year2013 April 25 Chandra Grahana

Two Consecutive Upavasas September 2013, 15th Sarvathra Ekadashi and 16th, Shravana Dwadashi
during Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.
Ekaadashi BasisBhagavatha/Vaishnava Ekadashi observance is decided based on the rule
that Dashami should have ended before Arunodaya (96 minutes periodpreceding Sunrise). As the Sunrise occurs at different times of the same day atdifferent places, maximum of three ekadashis in a year (sometimes none) willhave to be observed on a Ekadashi on different days in different places basis.
This is due to geographical/natural reasons only and Mutts’ calculations*/practices are not the cause.
However, this Deshabedha is practiced in Uttaradi Mutt only. In other mutts, the later day of the two different days is observed as Ekadashi at all places. -Those who observe Ekadashi may ascertain the dates in their Mutt.
*Few Udupi mutts are using Drigganitha Panchangam for day to day use.Sometimes their Ekadashi could be on a different day.
Smartha Ekadashi is based on Ekadashi thithi at the time of sunrise.
Ashoonya Shayana VrataThis vrata is for non separation of couple.Vrata involves Shodashopachara pooja in the evening to Pratimas of
Lakshmi and Narayana placed on a new bed . Bhojana is after ChandraDarshana. Vrata is on Krishna Dwitheeyas of Ashada, Shravana, Bhadrapadaand Aswina masas (beginning in Ashada and ending in Aswina).
After completion of vrata, the new bed and pratimas have to be given awayas Daana to an eligible couple.

Yajnopaveeta (the sacred thread) - why it is to be worn?Yajnopaveeta is the sacred thread representing deeksha to perform vedic
rituals. Men belonging to the first three varnas (brahmana, kshatriya andvaishya) have vedadhikara. They can perform sandhyavandana, gayatri japa, agni karya and the like and can also perform vedadhyayana. The pre-requisitefor all these is the formal initiation called upanayana where the boy’s fathergives the Yajnopaveeta and Brahmopadesha to his son initiating him intovedic rites.
One must undergo yajnopaveeta samskara before the vivaha (wedding)samskara. Similarly, shraddha karma is not valid unless the kartru has firstundergone the yajnopaveeta samskara.
The yajnopaveeta is said to have been created by Sri ChaturmukhaBrahma himself for this very purpose
YajnopaveetaThe yajnopaveeta comprises of three threads, and each thread is in turn
made up of three fine threads (strands) (a total of 9 strands). The threethreads that form the yajnopaveeta represent the 3 gunas, 3 vedas, 3 varnasand the 3 lokas.
By order of the Lord the abhimani devatas of these (3 gunas, 3 vedas, 3varnas and the 3 lokas) reside in the three threads. The strands represent:
The yajnopaveeta should not go either below or above the navel. It has tobe changed every year on the upakarma day and also after any ashaucha(mailige), or if broken.
Bachelors should wear one yajnopaveeta, where as a minimum of two iscompulsory for gruhasthas. The second one represents the extra duty ahouseholder has to perform. Gruhasthas can wear even 3 or 4 yajnopavItas, one representing the uttareeya and the other for shreyas.
UpakarmaUpakarma, means “beginning”, and this day is traditionally considered
auspicious to start the study of the Vedas. It is on this day that one startsafresh the study of vedas, after doing samarpana of what he has studied inthe earlier year.
Rugveda upakarma as per chandramana is on the day with shravananakshatra during shravana masa which normally is the full-moon day(Pournami). As per souramana is on the day with shravana nakshatra duringsimha masa.
Yajurveda upakarma is on shravana masa’s full-moon day - Pournami(Hayagreeva Jayanthi)
Why upakarma is done particularly on shravana full-moon day?On this particular day the supreme Lord Shri Narayana took the
incarnation as Shri Hayagreeva devaru and restored the vedas which wasstolen by a demon. In this incarnation, His head is of a pure white horse, while the rest of the body is like a human, possessing four hands. He holdsshankha, japamaala and pustaka in three hands; and the fourth hand showsthe jnana mudra. Lord Hayagreeva then preached the vedas to shri Brahmadevaru on this auspicious day for the benefit of the entire mankind.
So, the day of His avatara is chosen as the day to start and submit theveda adhyayana; and wearing a new sacred thread is a part of this function.
Ishti: A homa called Ishti homa has to be performed in houses on allPournami and Amavasye days. However, due to the extent of Thithis (fromsunrise) sometimes these have to be done on Prathama days. The actual dayis marked in Panchangas.
Anvadhana: Preparation of Agni for Ishti homa is called Anvadhana. This is always the previous day to Ishti.
Mahalaya Paksha Shraddha: Bhadrapada masa’s Krishna paksha iscalled Paksha masa. During this period adhikaris (persons who have losttheir father) perform Shraddha popularly referred as “Paksha”.
During this paksha, all departed relatives, friends, employers, servantsand even pets are offered oblutions.
Performing paksha is a duty (karthavya) and a golden oppotunity tooffer our tributes to all known / connected persons.
During the paksha masa, Navami is reserved for Muttheides (Ladies whohave pre deseased their husbands). Chathurdashis is reserved for personswho have died during accidents (by hurting themselves). These two thithiscannot be used for performing paksha for others.
Dwadashi is called Yatheenam (Mahalaya) Dwadashi, meaning reservedfor persons in the family who have become sanyasis. However, this thithican be used by anybody else unlike navami and chathurdashi.
Mahalaya Gouna Kala: Soura masa Thula is also referred to asMahalaya Gouna Kala. During this period (normally between October 15thand November 15th), Paksha can be performed by those who have missedpaksha masa. There is no reserved thithis during this period.
Shraddha Thithi Missed: Circumstances beyond one’s control cancause Shraddha Thithi to be missed. In such circumstances, shraddha canbe performed on the immediate next Ashtami or Amavasye which evercomes first.
Dhanishta Navaka: A period of 9 days during Vaishakha masa isdesignated as Dhanishta Navaka. The days are starting from Dhanishtanakshatra and ending on Rohini nakshatra.
Performing shraddha on all the 9 days (in a row) will be prescribed forfamilies suffering from series of mishaps as a remedial measure.
Punyadinas: Place of Moola Brindavana, Year of Brindavana Praveshaand the Mutt are indicated within brackets. U. Uttaradi Mutt, V.Vyasaraja Mutt, R. Raghavendra Mutt
Vyathishankha Darsha: Amavasye spread between Sunrise to Sunsetis called Vyathishankha Darsha.
Manvadi, Kalpadi, Yugadi: Starting days of Manvantharas (14),Kalpas (8) and Yugas (6). These days are part of the Shannavathi (96)days marked for Shraddha/Tharpana. Therefore, these days are notsuch good days for shubha karyas.

During an eclipse humans have an Ashoucha (Impurity) equal to that of aMrutha-shoucha (caused by death of relatives). Therefore, everybody shouldbathe at the end of an eclipse with the clothes worn (sachela snana) during theeclipse. Not bathing will cause the ashoucha to last till the end of nexteclipse.
