Descriptions of TutorialsFNC offers four tutorials:
• ATM
• DWDM
• Ethernet
• SONET
These basic technology tutorials are designed for all audiences in the telecommunications field. If you’re a beginning student, the tutorials raise your level of understanding quickly. If you’re already aware of the protocols, the tutorials enhance and reinforce your existing knowledge base.
ATMThis course describes Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), a cell transport technology, and how it can be used for your networking needs. ATM integrates voice, data, and video traffic on a single, multi-transport network. The tutorial provides a basic overview of ATM, what it is, how it works, and where it can be used. The tutorial also addresses ATM’s unique advantages when used with other transport systems.
DWDMDense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) increases the capacity of existing fiber-optic communications networks, and is far more cost-effective than adding more fiber to existing networks. In DWDM systems, multiple signals can be transmitted at various wavelengths on a single fiber, thereby eliminating the expense of laying additional fibers.
EthernetThis tutorial examines basic Ethernet functions. The tutorial explains the OSI model, the physical and data link layers at which Ethernet operates, as well as its support for higher-level protocols.
SONETThis tutorial is designed to introduce the SONET standard and the basic concepts of optical networking. It examines the evolution of the protocol, implementations, and applications. The tutorial summarizes optical networking, including optical switching and cross-connects. Anyone needing an introduction to emerging technologies in today’s telecommunications field should begin with this course.
Tutorials as PrerequisitesThe FNC tutorials are prerequisites for all courses taught at FNC. They are available for free download at:

Accommodations and Travel ArrangementsStudents are responsible for their own hotel accommodations, travel arrangements, and local transportation. FNC recommends that arrangements, including reservations, be made well in advance of the course start date. Please contact the Training Coordinator for additional information. FNC recommends purchasing refundable airline tickets.
Richardson, TexasMany hotels, motels, and restaurants are located in the Richardson and Plano area. FNC is located just minutes from Dallas where facilities are extensive; however, FNC recommends that students lodge in Richardson or Plano due to the heavy commuter traffic in the Dallas area. During peak morning and evening rush hour, travel times between FNC and the airport can take two hours. During non-rush hours, driving time from the DFW airport to FNC is about 35 to 45 minutes. If you have any questions concerning hotels or the local area, please contact our Training Coordinator at 972-479-4961. Maps, directions and hotel listings are located at the end of this section. Hotel listings are for our customers’ reference only and do not constitute an endorsement of any establishment by FNC.
Telephone Messages For StudentsAll messages will be received through the Training Coordinator at 972-479-4961, who will inform the student during break times. In case of an emergency, the class will be interrupted.
