To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world

To Spur You On! Hebrews 10:24 New International Version (NIV)

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,

So the writer of Hebrews writes to encourage and strengthen his fellow be-lievers. As we enter, I write to encourage you and to spur you on. We will have a great opportunity this coming year to serve God in better and better ways.

Our vision statement states that part of our outreach to the community is through vibrant worship. Well in this next year we will be gathering a group to examine our worship and figure out how we can be more vibrant in our wor-ship. Now this is not to say we don’t do a good job on Sunday’s. But the ques-tion is, can we do it better and attract families to come and stay as part of our fellowship. This group will examine the entire worship service the entire Sun-day morning. It will be asked questions like, what type of service will attract younger families, millennials, empty nesters? It will be asked to examine other services to see what they are doing and can we adapt it to our use here at Seminary? It will examine the possibility of a new service, is it feasible, and what will that look like? Once again I reiterate this is not to say what we do is bad or wrong, we all love our service. But what can we do to attract and keep new families?

We will also in this next year be looking to implement our single board sys-tem. There are many questions still being asked, and we will be working on these and others as we move forward. It is believed that we will operate in a more efficient way as we implement this system.

I realize that there are many fears about the changes we are attempting to do. I will quote scripture here to encourage you.

1 Corinthians 16:13New Living Translation (NLT) Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

We are not doing these things to hurt this church or anyone in it, but we need to do some things that may be uncomfortable this next year. In fact, the goal is to get us to the place of being a healthy church serving God and minis-tering to our community. So hang in there this next year will be exciting. But serving God always is!!! So let this spur you on to love and good deeds. Happy New Year!

December Scrip Cards   $205.98! That's how much our church made in rebates from the Scrip Program in December!!! Yes, JUST from December orders! This money will be used to support our community Vacation Bible School program next summer! And no one person made this donation to VBS...this amount is simply the rebates our church received from the Scrip Card orders we purchased in December. Please con-tinue to purchase Scrip Cards for your everyday purchases, for gifts, and for special times. Did you know you can purchase Scrip Cards for American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest? If you are planning a trip why not support our VBS program without any additional cost to you? There are numerous hotels and car rental companies in the Scrip Program too! Call Vicky at 260-433-6800 if you need a gift card on short notice. You can find out what cards we have available on hand to meet your needs.

Crafty Corner Come join us every other Tuesday for Crafty Corner! Upcoming dates include January 3, 17, and 31. We meet in the Wesley Gathering Room from 10 am to 2 pm or later. Some people knit, some crochet, some hook rugs, some quilt, and some color in coloring books. If you want to learn any new craft skills this would be a perfect place to start. Some people work on their own projects, some create prayer shawls to donate, and some create baby quilts and other baby items to donate. Some in this group contributed to sewing numerous pillowcases for Christmas gifts for the kids in Kids Club. Those who attend take turns bringing different items to contribute to a group lunch. We talk, we laugh, we help one another and we support one another. Please join us!

Unsung Heroes Many thanks to those unsung heroes who help keep our church warm, checking on it frequently during extreme cold weather, and to those who help keep our sidewalks, steps and ramp shoveled and salted to keep us all safe. Even though we don't say thank you often enough, you are very much appreciated!!!

Newsletter Information Just a little information to keep in the back of your mind. Newsletter articles and the calendar up-dated is due on the 20th of each month. I realize you won’t have an article every month, however there is so much going on in and around the church, this is the best way to spread the information with everyone about all aspects of the church.

If you put it in the newsletter, everyone will get the same information. If you would happen to miss a Sunday or not able to attend church, but are still a member, you can keep up with what is happening. With everyone's input, the newsletter becomes an important communication tool for the church. ~Nancy Hartley

Euell Wilson Center Kids Don't miss the Worship Service on Sunday morning January 15th! We will be blessed to have the Euell Wilson Center kids and their families join us for worship and potluck. They have been coming in January every year now for quite a few years and bringing their own special spirit in music and dance. The Euell Wilson Center serves over 100 kids every school day sharing Christ's love with each child and their families. Help us celebrate Christ and the Martin Luther King weekend with their special music and help support the Lord's work through this center.

Financial Report With one Sunday left in the year we are about $5,000 short of our goal. However, our expenses for the year are about $1,000 under budget

Country Store Thank you to all the shoppers who came in during the month of December and Christmas in the Village to make our Christmas Sales a big success. We will be having an after Christmas sale where all Christmas items will be half price. Come in and see what other goodies we’ve added to the store.

~Carolyn Hartley-Johns and Jo DeFord

If you would like to be on the telephone or email prayer chain, please contact Nancy Hartley at [email protected]

United Methodist Women - Women of Faith A BIG thank you to all who contributed to and provided cookies for our cookie sale event during Christmas in the Village December 2nd and 3rd. There was $235.00 deposited and applied to the Mis-sions Fund.

It was unfortunate that Mother Nature forced us to cancel the Christmas Party on December 13th. We thought it would be safer not to take a chance on the ice and snow. The good news is, we will be having Christmas in July on July 11, 2017 at the home of Carolyn Hartley-Johns. What a fun event to look forward to during the hot summer!

There will be no meetings in January and February. Weather permitting the next meeting will be March 14th. The hostess and lesson leader will be announced at a later date.

Any business needing attention during the next few months, should be directed to our Vice Presi-dent Pam Sagers until May 2017 at 260-672-2291.

~Shirley Wolf, President

Kid’s Club Christmas The Kid’s Club Christmas was a very special time. The kids cele-brated Jesus’ birthday, then went shopping and were given special gifts. So many people helped in so many different ways! A very big thank you to Claudia Houck, Brooke Branyan and Janet Tellis for making special pillow cases for each individual child.

Many others helped in the making of them and donating materials! Thank you, thank you!! Kid’s Club would never be what it is without the help of all of you! There are so many that are using their special gifts and talents. It all fits together like a beautiful quilt! Each part is unique and lovely. Thank you again and Happy New Year. ~Kathy Tormey

Inter-Church Council Update As we transition into 2017 may each of your families be blessed with good health and prosperity. Through your contributions to the Food Pantry, we have made it possible for those in need to feel the love and generosity of others. Praying for blessings to the Roanoke Community.
