28 June 2013 Provider Information for BAD Specialised Services Directory. DRAFT 9, 2013-06-28 Aims This directory has been compiled for the following reasons: 1. To facilitate the development of national networks and improve patient pathways. 2. To inform referrers 3. National experts are consultant dermatologists, receiving tertiary NHS referrals, who are widely consulted nationally by peers and patient support groups, and contribute to education and research on this topic. All entries should include name and centre, with an indication of whether they see A dults, C hildren or both (A+C). Children : children requiring specialised dermatology services should be referred initially to providers of Specialised Paediatric Dermatology who will liaise with the appropriate disease-specific national expert (in some cases this will be the same individual). Specialised centres seeing children with rare/complex dermatological conditions must comply with the Service Specification for Specialised Paediatric Services which is embedded in the dermatology service specification referenced above. Other centres receive extra-regional referrals but fall-short of “national centre” for reasons stated. Local champions. are consultant dermatologists , usually members of an appropriate special interest group, who receive tertiary referrals within their region. All entries should include name and centre, with an indication of whether they see A dults, C hildren or both (A+C). Celia Moss has liaised with subspecialty leads, co-ordinated the collection of information, and apologises for any errors and omissions. Next steps: 1. Providers will be asked to clarify whether their service is commissioned by NHS England, (ie whether it meets the requirements of the service specification) and this will be indicated in the directory. 2. More detailed information about providers will be included. David de Berker is developing a proforma for providers, trialling it with members of the Hair and Nails group. 3. 28 June 2013 Provider Information for BAD Specialised Services Directory. DRAFT 9, 2013-06-28
Aims
This directory has been compiled for the following reasons:
1. To facilitate the development of national networks and improve patient pathways.
2. To inform referrers
3. Eventually, to identify specialised dermatology services commissioned by NHS England (formerly NHSCB).
NB This directory has not been validated objectively. Entry on this directory does not currently indicate specialised
commissioning.
Subspecialties included: those included in the NHS England service specification for specialized dermatology, direct link
http://www.england.nhs.uk/npc-crg/group-a/a12/ .
National experts are consultant dermatologists, receiving tertiary NHS referrals, who are widely consulted nationally by
peers and patient support groups, and contribute to education and research on this topic. All entries should include
name and centre, with an indication of whether they see Adults, Children or both (A+C).
National centres provide a full-time service, with a specific national expert and appropriate MDT, as described in the
service specification. All dermatologists contributing to this service at this centre should be listed. All entries should
include name and centre, with an indication of whether they see Adults, Children or both (A+C).
Children: children requiring specialised dermatology services should be referred initially to providers of Specialised
Paediatric Dermatology who will liaise with the appropriate disease-specific national expert (in some cases this will be
the same individual). Specialised centres seeing children with rare/complex dermatological conditions must comply with
the Service Specification for Specialised Paediatric Services which is embedded in the dermatology service specification
referenced above.
Other centres receive extra-regional referrals but fall-short of “national centre” for reasons stated.
Local champions. are consultant dermatologists , usually members of an appropriate special interest group, who receive
tertiary referrals within their region. All entries should include name and centre, with an indication of whether they see
Adults, Children or both (A+C).
Devolved nations: NHS England can commission services, but cannot fund patients, from devolved nations.
Consultation: a previous draft was circulated to the BAD membership on 3rd April 2013. Celia Moss has liaised with
subspecialty leads, co-ordinated the collection of information, and apologises for any errors and omissions.
Next steps:
1. Providers will be asked to clarify whether their service is commissioned by NHS England, (ie whether it meets the
requirements of the service specification) and this will be indicated in the directory.
2. More detailed information about providers will be included. David de Berker is developing a proforma for providers,
trialling it with members of the Hair and Nails group.
3. David is liaising with the BAD to include this directory on the web-site.
Feedback on this draft should be to the subspecialty leads (emails on next page) and to [email protected]

Additional consultation with peers All UK consultants have had the opportunity to put their names forward. Also a number of consultants who were
considered to be possible participants in this were approached directly and have declined or not replied at this stage. Comments
Severe vasculitis is a multi-system disorder so a network should involve specialists from rheumatology, neurology, renal medicine, gastroenterology and other specialties. In practice these cases are managed in combined clinics with dermatologists and other specialists. Paediatric cutaneous vasculitis is often managed in combined clinics with paediatric dermatologists and paediatricians with an interest in rheumatology (and other paediatricians) This may fall within the remit of the specialist paediatric dermatology service.

The suggested centres are where there are consultants who are involved with vulval disease at a higher level eg. involvement in national societies, research, teaching as outlined in our original proposal. Additional consultation with peers The Dermatopathology community has been widely consulted and invited to submit via the National Specialist Dermatopathology EQA Scheme The following responded to the BAD survey, but not the initial survey of dermatopathologists participating in the NSD EQA scheme. We are uncertain if they would meet the minimum requirements of a Specialist Service, specifically being participants of the NSD EQA scheme, and having more than one colleague per centre to allow for covering the service.
