Congratulations to . . . Congratulations to Tammy Norcross who was com-missioned as a Parish Life Administrator/Pastoral Associate upon completion of this advanced course in the diocesan Ministry formation Program. Bishop Amos commissioned Tammy and others who have completed various disciplines in the diocesan pro-gram during a Mass on Saturday, October 1.

Stained Glass Windows in Gathering Space

Please notice in the gathering space that the first two stained glass windows have been installed in the southeast corner. When we have 60% of the final cost of the whole project we will place the order for the remaining windows. Designating the stained glass window project as a recipient of gifts on the occasion of a funeral would provide a nice tribute to your loved one and help advance the stained glass window project. Thanks to those who have already made a contribution to the stained glass windows project.

Thank You . . . Kudos to Dean Baker, Cindy Buchmeier, and Kathrine Dietrich who degreased the stove and stove hood in the kitchen, a task that has not been done in many years. It was a nasty job, and thanks to these good stewards for completing this needed task.

Welcome Welcome to the community of Faith to Roxann Garrett who was received into the church last week-end. Welcome, Roxanne. We treas-ure your presence in our faith com-munity.

Prayer for Vocations In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the masses this weekend. Members of the parish are always invited to remain in the church following mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after mass for parishioners to focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, our needs are great and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.

Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their

hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,

deacons, religious and lay ministers.

May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.

We ask this through Christ our Lord...Amen.

Cookbook Winners! Congratulations to Deanna Schmidt and Kay Boulicault, winners of the Sacred Heart cookbooks donated to promote National Family Day on September 26. This day focuses on families eating to-gether as research has shown that chil-dren from families that eat together rou-

tinely are less likely to abuse alcohol, drugs or tobacco.

Catholic Digest — Free A free sample of the Catholic Digest, a magazine with per-sonal, uplifting stories of faith is available on the table in the gathering space.

CROP Walk The annual CROP Walk is scheduled for this Sunday, October 2. Registration at 1:30 PM and the Walk begins at 2:00 PM. Please con-sider becoming a walker and collect-ing donations for this important effort to prevent and remediate hunger. Sign up sheets are in the Gathering Space. Anyone who can donate 2 dozen cookies for re-freshments afterwards, please contact Rita Ayers at 792-0788. They will need to be delivered to the Salvation Army by noon on Saturday. Twenty-five percent of donations will stay in Jas-per County, to be divided between the Salvation Army and county food pantries. The rest will support hunger-fighting and clean water projects around the world. Some-thing you may not know is that you can designate that your contribution goes to Catholic Relief Services. Please do this. One out of every 7 people in the world lives in hunger. Each day almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes- that‘s one every 5 seconds. Please show your gratitude if you are not one of the hungry by helping to make this year‘s CROP Walk a success. Contact Rita Ayers at 792-0788 or see us at the table after Mass.

2011 Annual Diocesan Appeal As a Eucharistic Community, we live out Jesus’ call

to go and Make Disciples of all nations and to love God and Neighbor

Over 125 parishioners have made a pledge to this year‘s Annual Diocesan Appeal!

All money collected over our parish goal is kept right here in our parish. This year, money exceeding our goal will be used to cover the cost of extraordinary repairs.

Please join us by pledging your support!

Why should I give? Giving is central to our Christian life. When we give, our lives are enriched in many ways. The ministries of the Diocese of Davenport will remain vibrant because of your generosity.

How much should I give? We ask that you give in response to how you have been gifted by God. God has been very generous in so many ways.

How should I give? We ask that you pray about your gift and then make your pledge commitment. This can be done via credit/debit card, electronic fund transfer or check.

A pledge is a convenient way of giving. It breaks your pledge into installments and a reminder will be sent to you for each installment. Installment reminders for your pledge serve as reminders that you are personally involved in the vital work of the Diocese. A pledge enables you to give a larger gift with a down payment and four installments.

Completing the Envelope Everyone is asked to complete the envelope by writing their name and address, your pledge amount and method of payment.

If you are paying any amount right now, put that in the envelope and mark the amount enclosed.

If you are paying by check, be sure to make them out to Sacred Heart Church, NOT THE DIO-CESE!! The diocese has asked that we pay 1/12th of our goal, monthly.

Seal the envelope and put it in the collection basket during mass or give it to Ann Ratliff in the parish office.

*Autoshare Giving Remember Autoshare Giving is available for all your contributions to the church, even the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Autoshare Giving is an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) from your savings or checking account. You simply decide the amount you want to give and the dates you want transfers made, and your gift will automati-cally be deducted according to your wishes. All information is kept confidential! Complete the box on the lower left corner of the Annual Diocesan Appeal pledge envelope and we‘ll make giving easy for you!

Congregate Meals (Meals On Wheels)

Weekend Deliveries for October Sacred Heart is responsible for week-end deliveries during the month of Octo-ber. It takes about an hour on Saturday and again on Sunday. Two people working to-gether pick meals up at Skiff Hospital‘s cafeteria (enter at the south entrance) and follow a delivery route that will be given to you, dropping off meals for the homebound. If you don‘t have someone to pair up with, we can pair you up. This is a rewarding and easy way to live the beatitudes! Contact Rita Ayers at 792-0788.

October is Respect Life Month

Birthright Baby Shower You are invited to participate in our Birthright Baby Shower throughout the month of October. Birthright provides caring, non-judgmental support to girls and women who are distressed by an unplanned pregnancy. Using its own resources and those of the community, Birthright offers positive and loving alterna-tives. Birthright presents many services and re-fers for many more. They provide friendship and emotional support, free pregnancy testing and maternity and baby clothes. They also give information and referrals to help clients meet legal, medical, financial, and housing needs. Birthright treats each woman as an individual who deserves kindness and respect, as well as personal attention to her unique situation. All Birthright services are free, absolutely confiden-tial, and available to any woman regardless of age, race, creed, economic or marital status. This is a special kind of shower. No need to take a couple of hours out of your day or worry about wrapping paper! Simply place your gift in the bassinet in the Gathering Space during the month of October.

Prayer Vigil Open to Public Also, we and the Knights of Columbus are planning a prayer vigil on Sunday, October 23 at 5:00 pm. Please plan to attend and bring all your friends and family. The theme is Life is a Gift. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity!

Sacred Heart Social Action Commission

Some people love change; others dread it. But one thing is true: to live is to change! We are in the last steps of working towards the use of a new Mis-sal at Mass. While the Mass will look the same, it will sound different. These changes are giving us a new

change to look more closely at the Mass—what we do and why we do it. Please take a look at this week‘s insert; there may be some ideas there to help you become more at ease with the coming changes.

Kids Against Hunger The next Kids Against Hunger bag-ging event will be Saturday, Novem-ber 5, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1409 S. 8th Ave E. Sacred

Heart will be bagging from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. We hope you will consider participating. Cost of foods bagged is $30. Partial scholarships are available. To register, or for additional information, call Kathy Doyle, 792-0160, or Shirley Dont, 792-7969

What exactly is changing? The structure of the Mass (the order of the ele-ments, the actions of the priest celebrant, and so forth) re-mains unchanged in the new edition of the Roman Missal. However, the translation of the prayer texts will change to more closely reflect the original Latin texts. In some cases, new options for prayers may be available, and some old op-tions may no longer be present.

Will the changes be noticeable? In the third edition of the Roman Missal, almost every prayer in the Mass—those spoken by the priest and those spoken by the people—has been retranslated from the Latin to English. Some prayers now recited by memory will need to be relearned, and the familiar language of many prayers recited by the priest will change. In preparing the new translation, the translators were asked to make the English texts conform more closely to the Latin originals and to retain traditional theological vocabulary that communicates important concepts of the faith. The language that the faithful will hear and pray is more formal and somewhat more complex than the language of ordinary conversation. It conveys rich theological con-cepts and retains biblical language and images.

How can I prepare for the change? There are many ways in which you can prepare for the changes in the Mass:

Make a conscious effort to participate more fully in the Mass each Sunday and holy day.

Take advantage of any special catechetical sessions of-fered by your parish or diocese.

Visit the Roman Missal Web site (www.usccb.org/romanmissal) to study the new texts and to learn more about the changes.

Read the new texts of the people's parts at Mass. Begin

to study them so that you will be able to pray them well when the new Roman Missal is implemented.

Pray for a renewal of love for the Liturgy in your parish and in the Church.

What difference will these changes make in my parish? Some of the differences will be obvious immedi-ately. We will have to learn new musical settings for the vari-ous parts of the Mass. We will learn new words for common prayers, such as the Creed. Those of us who began saying the Mass prayers by heart long ago will need to rely on

or many people, change does not come easy. Change requires us to stop doing things a certain way in order

to do something else. Many people find comfort in familiar routines and known ways of acting. Change interrupts those familiar routines. But change is also an opportunity to stop and reflect on what we are doing and to come to a better understanding of God, who does not change.

Why does the Church change the Liturgy? In its Liturgy, the Church always attempts to fol-low the "norm of the holy Fathers." This effort "requires not only the preservation of what our immediate forebears have handed on to us, but also an understanding and a more profound pondering of the Church's entire past. . . . this broader view allows us to see how the Holy Spirit en-dows the People of God with a marvelous fidelity in pre-serving the unalterable deposit of faith, even though there is a very great variety of prayers and rites" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 9). The Liturgy must, therefore, always celebrate and make present the Paschal Sacrifice of Christ—his saving Passion, death. Resurrection, and Ascension. However, over time, it may become necessary to make certain changes, such as adding prayers for recently canonized saints and adding texts that reflect the needs that the Peo-ple of God wish to bring to God in prayer. The third edi-tion of the Roman Missal makes such additions and provides a fresh translation of the Latin texts of the existing content of the Missal.

Who decides that the Liturgy should change? Pope John Paul II approved the promulgation of the third edition of the Missale Romanum, the Latin text, on April 20, 2000. The final Latin edition of the revised text was published in March 2002. The Congregation for Di-vine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was responsible for preparing the text. The Congregation is the Vatican office that the pope has charged with overseeing all matters related to the Liturgy and the sacraments. Any changes in the words of the sacramental formulas—the essential words in the celebration of each of the sacra-ments (either in Latin or in vernacular translations)—must be approved by the Holy Father personally. In addition, church law also gives to conferences of bishops (such as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) as well as individual bishops certain responsibilities with regard to the Liturgy.

F

printed texts again, at least for a while. In the early months of the transition, we may find it more challenging to pray with one voice as people adjust to the new texts and gradually commit them to their hearts. But these surface differences will give way to deeper and more significant changes. If we use the time of preparation well, we will make the changes with a deeper understanding of the Liturgy and a renewed reverence for and appreciation of the Mass. We will hear the prayers with new ears and with new hearts. Our Liturgy will be filled with new life and new spirit as we celebrate the Pas-chal Mystery of Christ made present for us.

Where can I turn for help in understanding these changes? The first stop for catechesis and formation re-garding these changes is your parish and diocese. All the faithful are encouraged to take advantage of parish efforts. You can attend catechetical sessions, read articles in the parish bulletin or newsletter or the diocesan newspaper, listen closely to homilies that help explain the changes, and come early to Mass to practice new musical settings for the prayers. In addition, many dioceses, schools, universities, and retreat centers will offer programs to help people un-derstand and appreciate the new translation. You can take advantage of these programs where possible. The official Web site for the third edition of the Roman Missal is, found at www.usccb.org/romanmissal. A va-riety of resources will be posted that may help you. Catholic publishers and national organizations will publish many resources, in print and online, to help you negotiate this time of change. Check out your parish book rack or your local Catholic bookstore to see what is avail-able.

What if I don't like the new translation? For most people, the unfamiliar is always uncom-fortable, at least at first. The more familiar the old is, the more challenging it may be to accept and embrace the new. It is completely normal to feel uncomfortable as you begin studying and reading the new texts. Taking steps to become more familiar with the texts can help a great deal. At the same time, be open to the possibility that you will find things to appreciate in the rich language of the new texts. The more you read them and study them and pray them, the more familiar and comfortable they will become

and the more you will appreciate the theological depth they convey. Taking the time to learn more about your faith, including the Mass and Scripture, can help you appreciate the new texts more fully. Using the catechetical opportuni-ties made available by your parish and diocese can help you overcome concerns about the changes. Finally, you can take your concerns to God in prayer. Pray for a deeper understanding of the meaning of these texts and for an open heart to grow in communion with the Church.

What can I do to make the process of change a good one for my parish? Everyone has a role to play in preparing to use the new translations:

Study the new texts with an open heart and an open mind so that you will be ready to use them in the Lit-urgy

Take advantage of opportunities to learn more about the new texts by attending catechetical programs and reading articles about the new texts.

Offer to assist your pastor or parish director of reli-gious education in preparing parish catechetical events.

If you are a parent, teach your children the new prayers and help them to understand the changes. Encourage them to participate in the Mass fully and to learn more about their faith.

Be very intentional about celebrating the Liturgy each Sunday and holy day. Arrive on time (or a bit early). Pray and sing with attentiveness. Stay focused on the action of the Liturgy rather than letting your mind wan-der. Hold the Sacrament of the Eucharist in great rev-erence. Finally, give thanks to God in your heart for so great a gift.

Times of change are always a challenge. But from this chal-lenge can come a deeper appreciation of who we are as the Body of Christ, gathering to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of the Lord. The DREAM ACT

What Is It?

Bishop Amos has dedicated the month of October to support the children of undocumented immigrants and the DREAM Act Program. The Bishop requested that parishes pray the rosary and write our congressmen in sup-port of the program. Sacred Heart will support the program by saying the rosary before weekend mass beginning the second week in October. Sacred Heart Bulletins in October will include information from the Bishop and more information about the Dream Act. The last weekend of October parish members will have an opportunity to sign cards to send to congress in support of immigration reform and specifically the DREAM Act.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our nation continues to grapple with the all-too-often polarizing issue of un-authorized immigration. Migrant youth were brought into the United States by their undocumented parents when they were only children and, at no fault of their own, are currently unauthorized. The children grow up immersed in American culture, attending school and playing in the band and on athletic teams with their American classmates. However, unlike their classmates upon graduation from high school, their future is bleak; their dream to dedicate their substantial gifts and talents to the only country they know cannot be ful-filled because of their legal status. They cannot legally obtain a job, attend many universities and even have barriers to joining the military. They are caught in a trap not of their own making.

I am pleased to join with the U.S. Catholic bishops‘ support for S.952, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act as introduced in the U.S. Senate on May 11, 2011. S.952 is very narrowly tailored to provide a hard-earned path to lawful status for those who meet its strict eligibility requirements, including being 15 years old or younger at the time of entry into the U.S.; living in the U.S. for five years; demonstrating evidence of good moral character; and graduating from high school or obtain-ing a GED. In addition to these requirements, applicants must then complete in good standing at least two years of college or military service in the U.S.

The DREAM Act provides an extension of grace to this select group of people, placing them on the long road to becoming productive citizens contributing to our economy. The Act has the endorsement of both academics and the Department of Defense. As John Paul II said in his 1995 visit to the United States, ―Today as before, the United States is called to be a hospitable, welcoming culture . . . the very essence of the ‗American Experience.‘

I urge you to contact your legislators and the President to seek passage of the DREAM Act as an expression of our Catholic concern for the dignity of all people. Sincerely in Christ,

Most Rev. Martin Amos Bishop of Davenport

generosity! Woo Hoo!!!!! I noticed that another Newton School isn't saving the Campbell's labels anymore. Please don't stop saving them, please bring them here for the stu-dents at All Saints Catholic School. This is a great family project. Please continue to save the UPC from your Campbell‘s products. Items to save are; Campbell‘s Soup at Hand, Chunky Soups, Select Harvest Soups, Spaghettio‘s, V-8 (Regular, Splash, Fusion), Pepperidge Farm Products, Gold Fish, Prego Spaghetti Sauce, and Swanson Broth. There is a detailed list on the bulletin board in McCann Center. If you are unsure on what the UPC code is, just take off the whole label and we can trim off the part that is needed. 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 2, 2011 (The Corner Stone)

Bible Verse:

Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43 (Vineyard Owner Leased)

Question of the Week:

Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will ________________ my son.' But when the tenants saw

the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' They

seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those

tenants when he comes?" They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and

lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." Jesus said to them,

"Did you never read in the Scriptures:

The stone that the builders ________________ has become the _________________________; by the Lord has this

been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the _______________________ of God will

be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its _________________."

Adults: How does this Gospel expand my understanding of respect for life?

Children: How can I take better care of God‘s creatures? NAME____________________________________________________________________________
