    Caring for the Oregon

    Cleaning the caseUse a cloth dampened with a milddetergent solution, and then wipe itdry. Avoid cleaners that may damagethe plastic components.

    Cleaning the screenUse a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Usewater, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglasslens cleaner. Apply the liquid to thecloth and then gently wipe the screen

    with the cloth.

    Cleaning the camera lensClean the lens only when necessary.

    Use a soft lens cloth. Apply lenscleaning uid to the cloth and gentlywipe the screen with the cloth.

    Getting Started

    Battery InformationOregon units operate on two AA batteries. Use alkaline, NiMH, orlithium batteries. Use precharged NiMH or lithium batteries for bestresults. Standard alkaline batteriesare not recommended for Oregon 550

    units when using the camera feature.To install the batteries:

    1. Lift the latch and remove thebattery cover.

    LatchBattery cover 

    2. Insert the batteries, observingpolarity.

    3. Replace the battery cover andpush the latch down.

    To select the battery type:1. Touch Setup > System > Battery

    Type.2. Touch Alkaline, Lithium,

    Rechargeable NiMH, orPre-Charged NiMH.

    Long-Term Storage

    Remove batteries when you do not plan to use the Oregon for severalmonths. Stored data is not lost when batteries are removed.

    Acquiring GPS SatelliteSignalsBefore the Oregon can nd yourcurrent location and navigate a route,you must acquire GPS signals.

    1. Go outdoors to an open area,away from tall buildings and trees.

    2. Turn on the Oregon. Acquiringsatellite signals can take a fewminutes.

    The bars on the Main menuindicate satellite strength. When

    the bars are green, the Oregon hasacquired satellite signals.

    Locking the ScreenLock the screen to prevent

    inadvertent screen touches.

    Navigating to aDestinationYou can use Where To? or choosea point on the map to navigate to adestination with the Oregon.

    NOTE: Depending on your

    device, you may not see all of theoptions listed below. See page( page iii) for a list of featuresavailable on your device.

    To navigate to a destination

    using Where To?:1. Touch Where To?.

    2. Touch a category.

    3. Touch one of the following items:

    Recent Finds—items youhave recently found.

    Waypoints—a list ofwaypoints (page 4).

    Photos—a list of geotaggedpictures (the pictures containlocation data) (page 19).

    Tracks—a list of tracks(page 15).

    Geocaches—a list ofdownloaded geocaches(page 23).

    Routes—a list of routes(page 14).

    All POI (Points of Interest)—ifsupported by the preloadedor optional mapping, variousPoints of Interest may belisted.

    Cities—a list of the 50 closest

    cities to your current location.4. Touch Go. A colored line indicates

    your course.

    5. Touch > Compass.

    6. Use the compass to navigate to

    your destination.

    To save a waypoint on the Mappage:

    1. On the Map page, touch the pointyou want to save.

    2. Touch the information button atthe top of the screen.

    3. Touch to save the waypoint.

    Using the CompassThe Compass page guides you toyour destination by displaying acompass and a bearing pointer.

    It also provides navigation data such

    as current speed, distance to the next point on the route, and estimated

    arrival time.

    The electronic compass (Oregon 300,400t, 400c, 400i, 550, and 550t) issimilar to a magnetic compass whenyou are stationary or walking. If you

    maintain a higher speed, such astraveling in automobile, the compassuses GPS signals to determine yourdirection. To turn the electroniccompass off, see page 31. Hold the

    compass level when navigating toensure maximum accuracy.

      NOTE: Holding the compasslevel is not necessary if you areusing an Oregon 550 or 550t.

    Calibrating the CompassCalibrate the electronic compass

    (Oregon 300, 400t, 400c, 400i, 550,and 550t) outdoors. For all Oregonsexcept the 550 or 550t, hold thedevice level while calibrating. Donot stand near objects that inuencemagnetic elds, such as cars, buildings, or overhead power lines.

    Calibrate the compass after movinglong distances, experiencingtemperature changes greater than

    20°F (11°C), or changing the batteries.

    To calibrate the electroniccompass:

    1. Touch Setup > Heading > PressTo Begin Compass Calibration.ORFrom the Compass page, touchand hold the middle of thecompass.

    2. Touch Start and follow the on-screen directions.

    “Too Fast,” or “Too Slow” mayappear, notifying you to adjust yourturning speed. If “Calibration Failed”

    appears, touch OK , and repeat the process.

    Bearing and CoursePointersThe Oregon can use either a bearingor course pointer on the compass.The bearing pointer indicates thedirection to your destination, andthe course pointer indicates your

    relationship to a course line leadingto the destination. To select a bearingor course pointer, see page 31.

    The bearing pointer points toyour destination, regardless of the

    direction you are moving. If the bearing pointer points toward thetop of the compass, you are travelingdirectly toward your destination. Ifit points any other direction, turntoward that direction until the arrowis pointing toward the top of thecompass.

    according to the scale shown at theedge of the compass ring. The scale

    refers to the distance between dotson the course deviation indicator.The course line to your destination is based on your original starting point.

    Move back to the “course line todestination” to compensate for

    deviation and to get back on course.This is most useful if you arenavigating on water or where thereare no major obstacles in your path.It also helps you avoid hazards toeither side of the course, such asshoals or submerged rocks.

    To change the Compass pagedata elds:1. On the Compass page, touch a

    data eld.

    Waypoints, Routes,and Tracks

    Modifying WaypointsYou can edit waypoints to change the

    name, symbol, comment, location,elevation, and depth of the waypoint.On the Oregon 550 or 550t, you canchange the picture. You can also usethe Waypoint Manager to relocate awaypoint to your current location,and to delete waypoints.

    To edit a waypoint:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

    2. Touch the waypoint.

    3. Touch the attribute.4. Touch letters, numbers, or

    symbols to make the changes.

    5. Touch (except whenchanging a symbol). Change

    other attributes, if necessary.

    6. Touch to discard thechanges.

    To reposition a waypoint to yourcurrent location:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

    2. Touch the waypoint you want toreposition.

    3. Touch Reposition Here.

    To delete a waypoint:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

    2. Touch the waypoint you want todelete.

    3. Touch Delete Waypoint.

    To delete all waypoints touch Setup > Reset > Delete All Waypoints >Yes.

      NOTE: On the Oregon 550or 550t, if you have selected a picture for a waypoint and thenyou delete the waypoint, the picture will not be deleted.

    Creating RoutesYou can create and store up to 50

    routes.

    To create and navigate a newroute:1. Touch Route Planner  >  >  to

    select a starting point.

    2. Touch a category.

    3. Touch the rst item on the route.

    4. Touch Use > .

    5. Repeat until the route iscomplete.

    6. Touch to save the route.

    7. Touch > Where To? >Routes to navigate the route.

    Viewing Stored Routes

    To view a route on the map:1. Touch Route Planner .

    2. Touch the route you want to view> View Map.

    Editing and Deleting

    RoutesYou can edit any of your stored

    routes.

    To edit a route:1. Touch Route Planner .

    2. Touch the route you want to edit >Edit Route.

    3. Touch the point you want to editand select from the followingoptions:

    Change—changes the pointto a different location.

    Review—shows the point onthe map.

    Move Down (or Up)—changes the order of the point

    on the route.Insert—adds an additionalpoint on the route. Theadditional point is insertedbefore the point you areediting.

    To reverse the order of points ona route:1. Touch Route Planner .

    2. Touch the route you want toreverse > Reverse Route.

    To delete a route:1. Touch Route Planner .

    2. Touch the route you want to

    delete > Delete Route.

    Viewing the ActiveRoute1. Touch Active Route. The points

    on your current route are shown.

    2. Touch a point for additionaldetails.

    Using the 3D ViewThe Oregon 400t and 550t have a 3Dview. Other Oregon models requireDEM (digital elevation model) datathat can be found in some Garmintopographic cartography. Go tohttp://buy.garmin.com for compatiblemap products.

    1. Touch 3D View.

    2. Touch to increase the angleof elevation, and touch to

    decrease the angle of elevation.3. Touch to pan the 3D map

    forward, and touch to pan the3D map backward.

    4. Touch to rotate the view tothe left, and touch to rotate

    the view to the right.

    Elevation PlotThe Oregon 300, 400t, 400c, 400i,550 and 550t can record elevation

    changes over distance or time, or pressure (barometric or ambient)changes over time. To set whichchanges are recorded, see page 32.

    1. Place the units within 10 feet (3meters) of each other.

    2. On the Main menu of both units,touch Share Wirelessly.

    3. On the receiving unit, touchReceive. The receiving unit

    indicates when it is ready toreceive data.

    4. On the sending unit, touch Send.

    5. On the sending unit, touch thecategory of data to send.

    6. On the sending unit, touch anitem to send > Send.

    7. Both units indicate that thetransfer is complete.

    Using the Camera

    You can take pictures with theOregon 550 and 550t. These picturessave a location that you can navigateto.

      NOTE: Pictures will be saved and

    displayed with either landscapeor portrait orientation. Theorientation is indicated by thecamera button position (vertical orhorizontal).

    To take a picture:1. Touch Camera.

    2. Turn the device horizontallyor vertically to change theorientation of the picture.

    2. If necessary, press to enableor to disable low-light mode.

    3. If necessary, press + or  - to adjustthe zoom on the camera.

    4. To manually focus the camera,touch and hold until the whitefocus frame turns green.

    5. Release the to take thepicture.

    6. Touch to exit the camera.

      NOTE: To automatically focusthe camera, quickly press and

    release to automatically focusthe camera and take a picture.

    To sort the pictures in the PhotoViewer page:1. Touch Photo Viewer.

    2. Touch .3. Select from the following options:

    Uploading and DownloadingPicturesLog in to www.mygarmin.com andlog into your myGarmin account.Connect your Oregon 550 or 550t toyour computer using the USB cable.Follow the on-screen directions toupload or download pictures.

    Viewing ImagesThe Oregon can display picturesstored on the Oregon or on amicroSD™ card.

    1. Copy .jpg images from yourcomputer to the Oregon. You can

    load them directly to the Garmindrive or create a new folder onthe Garmin drive (page 39).ORInsert a microSD card with .jpgimages in the microSD card tray

    (page 37).2. On the Main menu, touch Photo

    Viewer .

    3. Touch or to scrollthrough the pictures.

    Calculating the Size ofan Area1. Touch Area Calculation > Start.

    2. Walk around the perimeter of thearea you want to calculate.

    3. Touch Calculate when nished.

    Other ToolsDepending on your Oregon (see

     page iii), you can access additionaltools. Select from the followingoptions on the Main menu:

    Calendar  - use a calendar.

    Calculator  - use a calculator.

    Sun and Moon—view sunriseand sunset times along withthe moon phase.

    Alarm Clock—set yourOregon to sound an alarm.

    You can also set the unit toturn on at a specic time.

    Hunt and Fish—view thepredicted best dates andtimes for hunting and shingat your current location.

    Stopwatch—use a timer,mark a lap, and time laps.

    Customizing theOregon

    Changing the ProleProles are a collection of settingsthat allow you to optimize yourOregon from one type of use toanother, such as moving fromrecreational use to automotive use.

    When you are in a prole and changesettings such as data elds, units ofmeasurement, or position settings,they are saved automatically as partof your current prole.

    Setting Up Proles

    To change a prole1. On the Main menu, touch ProfleChange. Your current prole isindicated on the screen.

    2. Touch the prole you want to use.

    To change the name of a prole:1. Touch Setup > Profles.

    2. Touch a prole > Edit Name.3. Touch letters, numbers, or

    symbols to make the changes.

    To change the order of the

    Using System Setup

    Language —select the text languageon the Oregon. Changing the textlanguage does not change the

    language of user-entered data or mapdata, such as street names.

    Battery Type —select the type of battery you are using.

    Garmin Spanner —allows youto use the Oregon USB port withmost NMEA 0183-compliantmapping programs by creating avirtual serial port.

    Display —select the type ofdirectional heading shown on thecompass:

    Directional Letters —setsthe Compass page reading todirectional letters (N, S, E, W).

    Numeric Degrees —sets the

    Compass page reading to degrees(0°–359°).

    Mils —sets the Compass pagereading to mils (0 mils–1000mils).

    North Reference —select the northreference of the compass:

    True —sets true north as theheading reference.

    Magnetic —automatically setsthe magnetic declination for yourlocation.

    Auto Calibration —allow thealtimeter to self-calibrate each timeyou turn the Oregon on.

    Barometer Mode —select VariableElevation (used when moving)or Fixed Elevation (used whenstationary, allowing the altimeter tofunction as a standard barometer).

    Pressure Trending —select whenthe pressure data is recorded. TouchSave Always to record pressure dataevery 15 minutes, even when theOregon is turned off. Touch Save

    When Power On to record data onlywhen the Oregon is turned on. This

    can be useful when you are watchingfor pressure fronts.

    Plot Type —select the elevation plottype:

    Elevation/Time —records

    elevation changes over a periodof time.

    Elevation/Distance —recordselevation changes over adistance.

    Barometric Pressure —records barometric pressure over a periodof time.

    Ambient Pressure —recordsambient pressure changes over a

     period of time.

    To manually calibrate thealtimeter:1. Go to a location where you know

    the elevation or the barometricpressure.

    2. Touch Setup > Altimeter  > PressTo Begin Altimeter Calibration.

    3. Touch Yes if you know the

    elevation, touch No > Yes if youknow the barometric pressure.

    4. Enter the elevation or barometricpressure, and then touch .

    Pairing the OregonThe Oregon can be used with an

    optional Garmin heart rate monitorto display your heart rate. It can also be used with an optional Garmincadence bike sensor to display your pedaling cadence. When connectedto the appropriate Garmin device, theheart rate and bike cadence valuesare listed as data-eld options on theMap page, the Compass page, andthe trip computer.

    Pairing is connecting your Oregonwith wireless sensors, such as aheart rate monitor or a cadence bike sensor. After you pair the rsttime, your Oregon automaticallyrecognizes the wireless sensor

    whenever they are turned on andwithin range of each other.

    4. Touch Search for new.

    5. A “Connected” message appears.

    Attaching the Carabiner A carabiner with a clip comes with

    the Oregon 300 and 400 series unitsand is optional with 200 series units.

    1. Position the carabiner clip in theslots on the mounting spine of theOregon.
