ADR
• Ain’t nothing “automatic” about it! Used in both
fiction and non-fiction.
• Master & Commander, T2, etc. The majority of these
films are “looped.”
• Challenge: matching sound quality and performance.
• One strategy: record “wild” takes immediately after
scene was shot.
• In the studio ADR--break dialog into overlapping
chunks

ADR Tools
• FCP “Voice Over Tool” allows you to recordmultiple takes while watching a clip and listening todialog on headphones.
• Puts the recorded audio on an empty track in FCP
• Once all clips are recorded, export OMF to ProTools and use VocAlign plug in.
• VocAlign makes micro cuts, and time compressionsand expansion to lock new audio to original. Prettyamazing. Watch for gaps.

• One way to Actor-Proof a film (for those actors
who can’t walk and talk)
• Narrators need to be directed even more thanactors.
• Write your own VO and say it yourself--use the
VO tool in FCP.
• Mix up dialog and narration to avoid monotony.

• With this is in mind, many folks say: “Show, don’t tell.”But doesn’t just “showing” promote the idea that
“reality” is not constructed by the filmmaker?
• “Salesmen” is classic verite documentary. Is it any less“constructed” than a film with voice over?
