Designed by David Bushnell, Turtle, the first combat submarine, attacks HMS Eagle in New York Harbor. Bushnell’s design is the seed of what grows into the U.S. Navy submarine force more than 100 years later.

Commodore Thomas McDonough leads the American squadron to victory at the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812, ending the war’s final British invasion.

From his flagship, USS Olympia, Commodore George Dewey leads naval forces in the destruction of the Spanish Fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, without the loss of a single American life.

In an amphibious action led by Seventh Fleet Commander Adm. Arthur Struble, troops are deployed ashore in the Korean War’s Inchon landing, fracturing the North Korean war machine.

In response to the Soviet deployment of missiles to Cuba, Second Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Alfred Ward leads the U.S. established- quarantine of the island nation.

In Z-Gram 66, CNO Adm. Elmo Zumwalt directs immediate action to combat “significant discrimination in the Navy.” He ends the Z-gram saying, “There is no black Navy, no white Navy—just one Navy—the United States Navy.”

Forward-deployed naval forces provide protection for early introduction of land-based ground and air assets as Operation Desert Storm begins.

Four days after Fireman Mike Tilley coaxes a generator to life, thus saving USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) after she was mined by Iran, Sailors and Marines strike Iranian ships and oil platforms in Operation Praying Mantis.

U.S. Navy SEALs on the fantail of USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) shoot and kill three pirates holding captain Richard Phillips, master of Merchant Vessel Maersk-Alabama.

Navy SEALs kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in an intelligence-driven U.S. operation in Pakistan.
