STANDERTON - Two passengers of a truck are fighting for their lives in hospital while the driver was not lucky enough to es-cape with his life - he died instantly.

The accident happened on the R23-Volks-rust road at 07:45 on Thursday, 16 June, in heavy fog. According to the police, two trucks were travelling towards Standerton, following each other.

A coal truck which was travelling in front, stopped at the stop-and-go control point, but the other tuck, that followed, failed to stop and crashed into the back of the stationary truck.

The magnitude of the impact caused the driver to die instantly behind the wheel, while the two passengers sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the coal truck was not hurt. Police, AfriForum, paramedics and Lekwa Emergency Services arrived on the scène where the truck driver was certified dead.

The two passengers were rushed to hos-pital for treatment, while the deceased was taken to the government mortuary at Stan-derton Hospital.

Captain Johannes Nhlabathi reports that while all the attention was on the injured and the deceased, another drama unfolded next to the scene.

He explained that a member of the SAPS Forensic Crime Scene Investigation Unit had parked his car on the side of the road next to the scene against an embankment and was also working on the scene.

STANDERTON - The SAPS have reco-vered a Toyota Fortuner in Sakhile after it was stolen during a robbery in Kosmos Park on Wednesday night, 15 June. According to the SAPS, a 74-year-old man was sleeping in his house in Rhino Street when he sud-denly woke to the sight of three knife wiel-ding thugs who ordered him to hand over keys to a safe. He told them that they can look around, but that there was no safe in the house.

The intruders allegedly tied both the victim’s hands and feet with a rope and searched his house. They stole a watch, a cell phone and a TV. They then demanded his car key so that they could continue their search for money in the car. After handing over the key he reportedly remained in the bedroom for a long time, but eventually managed to free himself.

When he looked around the house, he saw that his television and his car was gone and then called the police. Even though the man was not hurt, he was terrified. Captain Johannes Nhlabathi reports that when they arrived at the house on Thursday morning, they discovered that the thugs had gained entry through a window after breaking the burglar proof bars. The SAPS later received a call about an abandoned Toyota Fortuner in the street in Sakhile next to the house of a police officer stationed at Standerton Po-lice Station. The officer was at work when his family phoned him about the car. The Toyota Fortuner was positively identified as the one stolen from the house in Kosmos Park. Captain Nhlabathi confirmed that the car was recovered and taken to Standerton Police Station while a case of house robbery is under investigation. DM

TRICHARDT - The SAPS in Trich-ardt received a call on 19 June about a woman crying in some shrubbery next to a road. Upon their arrival they found two men who led them to the source of the crying.

The victim, a 44-year-old woman, sus-tained a serious head wound and was un-able to talk. Ambulances were called to the scene, but on their arrival the woman had already died.

The police have opened a murder case and are still investigating.

A stern war ning was issued to residents not to walk alone, especially after visit-ing taverns. Anyone who has informa-tion regarding this murder must please contact Detective Sergeant Fakude on 017 638 0241. JD

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” (Galatians 4:6)

We celebrated Father’s Day this weekend and for many it was a day of dedication to their earthly father for his love and powerful presence in their lives. For others it was just another day, because celebrating Father’s Day without an earthly father is just, depressing. Even though some of us have and others do not have an earthly father we all, have a Heavenly Father, who was, is and forever will be ours. Have you ever realized that God was never known as “Father” until Jesus came to earth and revealed Him as such? In His prayer to His Father, Jesus said, “And I have declared to them Your Name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” (John 17:26) What name was Jesus referring to? It was the name “Father”. If there was anything close to Jesus’ heart, it was to introduce God as “Father” to us. In the Bible, Jesus said, “Therefore, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (Matthew 6:31–32) Once,

He said, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11)

Jesus wants you to always have this image of God in your mind—that He is your Abba, Father. Why? Because He wants you to know that there is nothing more important or too insignificant for the Father when it comes to His children. Imagine a father playing with his five-year-old son, when he notices a splinter embedded in his little boy’s thumb. The concerned father asks, “When did you get this?” “A few days ago,” the boy answers. “Why didn’t you tell Daddy about it?” “I thought you were too busy and that I shouldn’t bother you.” If you were that father, wouldn’t it break your heart to hear your child say this to you? A splinter in one’s thumb may be a small thing, but there is nothing too small when it concerns your child because if it affects him, it affects you too. Now, no matter how old you are today, you are still God’s child, so don’t think that your problem is too small for God. If it is important to you, it is important to your Father too. Beloved, always remember that He is your Abba, Father!

God is your Abba Father The recent Annual General Meeting of the Kosmos Retirement Village leaves one speechless and deeply concerned. What was supposed to be a safe haven where old-er people can spend their retirement years in peace of mind and dignity has become a place of uncertainty and turmoil. Transpar-ency and openness fading away; hiding be-hind incompetence, excuses and sweeping issues under the rug.

The organisation is supposed to be in the public domain and pro-older persons. How-ever, to see and hear the outcry of residents ignored, is disturbing. One needs to under-stand many residents have invested their last savings in the organisation. What is even more disturbing is the fact that they have no real say in the stewardship of the organisa-tion. Despite a law, protecting their inter-ests, their voice and requests are cunningly negated through clever arguments and con-troversy.

The following questions need to be an-swered:• Why have so many elected direc-tors in the past vacated their positions be-fore the end of terms of office?• Why is Act 13 of 2006 only partly implemented with regard to the residents committee and its role and responsibilities?

• Why are so many rooms standing empty?• Why was an incomplete financial report presented at the last AGM?• Why are there no proper tender processes in place for services rendered to the organisation?• Why are there preferred providers and so many local businesses ignored? The list of questions is infinite.

The Companies Act is so clear on the re-quirements, abilities, competences and li-abilities of directors. However, it is selec-tively applied.

What was supposed to be a report back to the residents and community of Stander-ton, ended up in doubt and uncertainty. One wonders how many people who attended the meeting of 14 June will attend the next meeting. Furthermore, how many people will be willing to serve on the board in fu-ture after such a demoralizing event that took place on 14 June? It is saddening to see a meeting ending with no concrete reso-lutions taken and no election of desperately needed willing, dedicated, competent and committed board members.

One wonders again, who is being protect-ed and what is being hidden? (Concerned resident to be)

STANDERTON - A new initiative, named Lekwa Clean-up Crew, was recently launched by residents of Standerton. They aim to clean up the town centre, the entrances to our town and once that is achieved, they would like to move on to public places like parks and cemeteries. They also aim to create jobs and opportunities for the needy and to make all the residents proud of our beautiful, clean town.

Lekwa Clean-up Crew will not take over

from our municipality, but rather co-operate with them. The municipality will have to provide the black bags and protective gloves and residents, businesses and the Municipality of Standerton will become stakeholders of this project by committing themselves, either financially or physically, and in so-doing everybody’s participation will make this project sustainable.

This will be a non-profit organisation, but a bank account has been opened into which

all monies can be paid and this account will be managed by a well-respected accountancy firm in town. Information about the bank account and monthly reports will be available to all stakeholders at all times.

Local persons will be hired and vetted by KSS (Kasselman Security Services) and Lekwa Clean-up Crew will be cleaning our town from Mondays through Fridays during normal working hours. JD

Lekwa now has a clean-up crew

One of the first clean-up projects by Lekwa Clean-Up Crew was to clean a vacant stand adjacent to a block of flats in Caledon Street.

Doen asseblief, waar moontlik, so voort in die toekoms!

SHS is bakgat!

STANDERTON - Members of the Democratic Alliance in Lekwa Local Municipality took to the streets to ex-press their anger and frustration about poor service delivery with a special em-phasis on housing, water and sanitation and unfair practice in the allocation of RDP houses.

A memorandum was handed over to the Municipal Manager and The Execu-tive Mayor. The main focus is on the fol-lowing wards: 3, 4, 5, 6, and 11. Points of reference on the memorandum are as follows:1. The DA is aware that residents of

the above mentioned wards were placed on a waiting list for RDP houses in the last 15 years, but as and when residents are allocated houses, priority is given to friends and close relatives of those in au-thority. The ill practice denies de-serving people the right to live in dignity and the right to adequate access to water and sanitation, in-cluding access to electricity.

2. The DA is aware that in ward 6, hostel dwellers were removed from their hostel accommodation to tiny two-roomed shacks as a tempo-rary shelter while the municipal-ity is building modern flats. Hostel dwellers were promised that they will be given first priority to be al-located available RDP houses. It is now is more than 10 years later, and people are still displaced and there is no indication of when and how they will be reimbursed.

3. The DA is concerned about people that were moved from ward 6 to ward 4. Those people are living in extreme poverty. Two to three fam-ilies are sharing one stand and their toilets are built on the street. It is over a year now that residents of ward 4 experience burst pipes and water leakages in Marais Street. All houses along that street are threatened by cracking walls.

4. They demand that people in Rooi-koppen, Chivovo, and TLC be ac-commodated in newly built RDP houses in Extension 8. Alloca-tion of houses must be done on a first-come-first-serve principle and priority must be given to squatter camp dwellers.

5. They demand that the municipality must fill all the vacant posts budg-eted for in order to fast-track ser-vice delivery and reduce the high unemployment rate, especially among the youth.

6. They demand the immediate termi-nation of incompetent contractor’s agreements and bring in qualified people that will deliver in time on various projects.

7. They demand that the municipal-ity ensures that they have sign lan-guage interpreters in all gatherings and council meetings.

8. The DA in Lekwa Municipal-ity would like to have a response within seven working days from 14 June. If they fail to meet the deadline, the DA has threatened with further action. DM

A-spanne beklink provinsiale stryd

DK
