Happy Holidays From Kate From the season of thanksgiving to the season of gift giving, the

holidays are upon us. Our diverse membership observes a variety of ethnic and religious celebrations during the month of

December, and we hope to share some of them with you. We’re

having several events here at the Center: there is a big party with dancing, a

traditional holiday luncheon, and casual gatherings the day before some of the big

holidays – please come and partake in all the festivities. Plus, we had the piano

tuned in time for some holiday favorites.

I’d like to extend my personal invitation to each and every one of you reading

this to come to our special Holiday Party during the evening of Saturday, December 20, here at the Senior Center. Please bring any family members who would like to

join you. There is a fee, but for this special occasion, each member can buy up to

four tickets at the member price, as we want to meet your families. Tickets will be

available at the door, but it would help our planning if you’d buy them in advance.

Come have some holiday cheer, learn a new dance, and sing some carols!

We’re so grateful to all of our members, volunteers, vendors, and guests who

made this year’s Craft Show such a huge success. If you participated and I didn’t

get the chance to thank you personally, stop in my office so I can do just that. One last thing as we head into the new year - there’s a suggestion box in the

hallway outside the conference room, and I’d love to hear your suggestions on ways

to make CRSC better for us all in 2015.

¨ HOLIDAYS CLOSURES: The Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, December 25th and 26th and on Thursday and Friday, January 1st and 2nd. We are OPEN on both Wednesday, December 24th and on Wednesday, December 31st, and we are having parties on both days. Please see pages 8-9 for more information.

¨ INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSURES: Please make sure you read the notice on page 14 of how to check if we are closed during inclement weather.

¨ If any of you snowbirds would like to have your newsletter mailed to you while you are away from Colorado, let us know your address, as the post office doesn’t forward them. We can also email it to you. You can call 303-688-9498 with the information.

Irene Henning, who greets visitors to the Center in the mornings, says that she “migrated” to Colorado from New York (yes, that’s a New York accent you hear), in 2004. It was difficult to leave her two sons, their wives, and three grandsons behind. She and Bill Kelly have made a home here in Castle Rock. Their blended family now includes thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. It’s interesting to note that she and Bill were related by earlier marriages, so all of the extended family are actually related to them both, but it’s much too complicated to explain here.

Irene joined the Senior Center upon moving here, and has been active ever since. She was Vice President, a volunteer receptionist, and a member of many committees. In 2013 she became a staff member, and is known for her crazy hats, which she wears to commemorate different holidays. People chuckle when they come in the door and see her headbands. Irene goes back to New York to spend the summer with her family; she also spends time with the grandchildren here, which she says keeps her young. In her spare time she enjoys going out to dinner with friends, traveling and reading. Topping her “bucket list” is to take the entire 26 members of both her and Bill’s families on a cruise.

You have chosen a great place to get involved and make great friends, and we

are so glad to welcome you to the Castle Rock Senior Center:

WOW!!!! This was the BEST Craft Show ever. Can you believe that we

have been doing this for 22 years? This is my 5th year of coordinating it, and I am still amazed at ALL the wonderful volunteers! You all went above and beyond once again with

everything that you did.

Thank you so much to each of you bakers, crafters, knitters, crocheters, seamstresses, quilters, painters, librarians, gardeners,

artists, writers, phone callers, drivers, balloon artists, ticket sellers, greeters, loaders, unloaders, packers, unpackers,

auction watchers, cashiers, and anyone that just smiled and said “it’s going to be a great show.”

Words just can’t express how thankful I am for all of you and for what a team effort this event truly is. Thank you to the Board of

Directors, the staff, and their families, too.

You are probably not quite ready to hear it yet, but here’s to next year!! I can’t wait to see what we can do for our 23rd year. Thank

you again from the bottom of my heart, I love you ALL!!

Wednesdays, December 3 & 17 at 9:00 AM

As I was researching to write this article, thinking I would write something about emotional health and getting through the holidays, one article had 3 advertisements that were much more interesting. They were – in this order:

1) Top 5 Senior Dating Sites; 2) Best Skin Tighteners; 3) 7 Hidden Dementia Signs

Our topic was dementia at the November Lunch and Learn, so that’s covered. Apparently, however, I need to focus in the future on dating and tightening your skin. I think what those ads are really representing is our need to be socially involved and to feel like we look good.

Regarding the social aspect, it’s December and there are more than the usual opportunities to join in gatherings and events. This time of year can be quite rough if you are missing people who are no longer with you. Remember those important people with memories and

smiles, but don’t forget to also live and be active today. That’s how memories are made.

As far as looking good, I have discovered that usually if someone looks good, that means they are feeling good. You can feel good if your health is “behaving,” or if a friend you haven’t talked to in awhile calls you for a chat, or even if eggnog shakes are back at Mickey D’s (this makes my daughter smile). So, give some thought as to how you can make someone feel good this holiday season, and if someone thinks of you – pay it forward. We can all always use a bit of cheer and a smile!

Castle Rock Senior Center

Don’t let holiday treats sneak pounds on you. Join the nation’s leading fitness program for older adults. The Castle Rock Rec Center (same building as the Senior Center) is a participating fitness location, and many leading Medicare health plans and Medicare Supplement carriers offer SilverSneakers as a benefit. Ask your provider if they cover it. If not, the fees are reasonable. The Rec Center offers a variety of SilverSneakers classes - those that move slowly, those more hard core and those in the water. Stop at the Rec Center front desk, look at the available classes, and sign up today.

What is Colorado Gives Day?Colorado Gives Day is an annual

statewide movement to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Colorado

through online giving. Donors select from nearly 1500 nonprofits, of which the Castle Rock Senior Center is included,

and their contribution goes directly to the organization. Plus, for the first time ever, Colorado Gives Day features a $1 Million

Incentive Fund, one of the largest gives-day incentive funds in the country. Every nonprofit receiving a donation on December 9th receives a portion of the

Incentive Fund, which increases the value of every dollar donated. Donations

can even be scheduled in advance of December 9th, and giving is easy, safe

and secure.

In addition, donations are accepted throughout the year at

www.ColoradoGives.org. Recurring payments of any amount can be set up online, making this a wonderful way for family members, local or far away, to

easily give to an organization that benefits their loved one (YOU!).

How You Can Get InvolvedMany of you have children/grandchildren or other relatives/close friends who know

you enjoy your association with the Castle Rock Senior Center. This event

is the perfect opportunity for them to make a donation to us - in your honor. By giving on December 9th, they would join with thousands of others giving to nonprofits that are important to them, and this way their donations go further through the $1 Million Incentive Fund.

To make it easy for you to ask those folks, we have postcards which you can send out - we’ll even pay the postage if you ask. If you can’t get to the Center, let us know and we’ll mail you some.

Send them out and ask for donations, on your behalf, to your near-and-dear senior center. If every grandchild gave just $5 the impact could be huge. Now imagine if each set-up a monthly $5 donation. All

you can do is ask.

Of course we also hope you will make a donation. If you or someone you know would rather write a check, we will, of

course, accept any donation.

Our objective is for you to have FUN doing

this, so we have prizes. To claim a prize, bring in, call in or email [email protected] a list

of 3 people who donated to Castle Rock

Senior Center on Colorado Gives Day

(including yourself) because you asked them. If you enjoy the Senior Center, ask others to support it.

anyone make an online donation.

Purchase Castle Rock’s MotoSpa car wash gift certificates for $10 each (a $13 value). Use them yourself or give them as gifts. These are one time use cards. The Senior Center receives a donation of $5 back from MotoSpa. What a great deal for everyone! They are only available through January, but the cards themselves can be used all year.

VOA LUNCHES Tuesday, Thursday & Friday at 11:30 AM Except Dec. 25/26 and Jan. 1/2 The Volunteers of America host an on-site lunch at our Center. This is a nutritious meal for a suggested donation of $2.50. No advance sign-up required. “Let’s Celebrate Party” will be on December 11th. A special holiday meal will be provided by VOA and served on Thursday, Dec. 18th at noon - in Panorama.

OUT TO DINNER — Ted’s Montana Grill at Southlands Mall Wednesday, December 3 4:30 PM $7 ($10 non-members) Had your fill of turkey? Then join us for a hearty meal in a restaurant with the largest bison menu in the country, although you can also have beef or fish entrees. Ted’s was the brain-child of Ted Turner and his love of Montana. He teamed with a world-class restaurateur, and ten years later, every Ted's is a proud tribute to the ingredients, meals and hospitality that define the Great American West while preserving and building the bison herds in America. Plus, we are headed to Southlands Mall, where beautiful holiday decorations and seeing the skaters on the ice skating rink will make it a special evening. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual dinner.

ANNUAL LION’S CLUB HOLIDAY DINNER FOR SENIORS Saturday, December 6 5:30 PM Panorama Hall No Charge

OUT TO LUNCH - Seasons 52 near Park Meadows Monday, December 8 11:00 AM $5 ($8 non-members) Seasons 52 is a nationally recognized chain which recently opened in Lone Tree as a celebration of what’s good now with seasonally inspired ingredients at their peak of freshness. Rustic cooking techniques bring out natural flavors and are inherently lighter - with nothing on the menu more than 475 calories. You’ll have a large variety of choices: salads, wonderful flatbreads, sandwiches, soups and entrees, or maybe split some small plates with friends to try a variety. This restaurant comes highly recommended so don’t miss it. They are limiting us to just twenty people, but we will work on adding a second trip if there are enough on the waitlist. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual lunch.

ANNUAL IREA HOLIDAY LUNCHEON FOR SENIORS Wednesday, December 10 11:30 AM No Charge

HOLIDAY POTLUCK LUNCHEON AND ENTERTAINMENT Wednesday, December 17 at 12:00 PM $1 + dish ($4 + dish non-members) Sign up at the Center to bring a holiday side dish We’ll cook the turkey and ham (that’s what the nominal fee is for) and you decide what side dish you want to bring. Make sure you sign up on the potluck list, so we make sure we’ve got enough variety for this traditional meal. First come/first served on what you bring until the list for each category fills up. After you get your fill, we are pleased to welcome back a comedy show starring Marge, who was here a couple of years ago with the hilarious “Cooking with Marge” show. This time she’ll have you laughing about the holidays in her kitchen as we present “Christmas with Marge.”

BRUNCH & BINGO OR JUST BINGO at Slammers Bingo Hall Every Thursday Morning $8 ($11 non-members) If we’re just going to play Bingo, we leave at 10:00 AM. If it’s Brunch & Bingo, we will now leave at 9:00 AM and stop for a mid-morning meal. Join us to go to Slammers Bingo Hall in Lakewood. Bingo costs and food purchases not included in Activity Fee.

TRIP - Evening Holiday Lights Tour in Denver Friday, December 5th 4:00 PM $8 ($11 non-members) What is it about outdoor light displays that gets everyone in a great mood? If you feel that way, join us and take in the sights without worry about the traffic. We stop first for dinner at Black Eyed Pea (on your own), and then take a walking “Blossom of Lights” tour at the Denver Botanic Gardens ($8 senior fee

which you will pay at the door if you feel you are up to it in the cold, or you can stay on the bus). From there you’ll get in the warmth of the bus for a driving tour of downtown Denver and some of the city neighborhoods known for great lighting displays. Dress for the weather at the Botanic Gardens. This is our third year of this popular trip which has been requested once again.

CASINO TRIP - Reserve in Central City Tuesday, November 9 8:30 AM $10 ($13 non-members) We usually take the month of December off from our casino trips, but these day trips are more popular than ever so we are adding in a December trip and you can go try your luck one last time this year. If the weather is bad, we will call you in the morning of the trip to cancel.

TRIP - Day at the Renovated Union Station in Denver Friday, December 12th 9:30 AM $8 ($11 non-members) Denver’s newest destination is 100 years old. Step through the doors of the newly renovated Denver Union Station and you’ll automatically see that history got a makeover. Every detail of the stunning Great Hall space pays homage to a pioneer spirit while embracing a truly modern sensibility at this historic transportation hub, which now is home to light rail, Amtrack and RTD bus service. We will not be having a tour, so you are free to explore shops, the Crawford Hotel, and have lunch at any of the 11 restaurants, ranging from elegant and upscale to coffee shops (we will provide a list for you). If weather permits, you can also walk over to the 16th Street Mall to shop and people watch. The bus will load to return to Castle Rock at 2:00 PM. Note, if you’re looking for a Mystery Trip, we had to postpone it - look for a trip in January.

SHOPPING TRIP - Outlets at CR & Park Meadows Mall Monday, December 15 9:30 AM $5 ($8 non-members) No one likes to go to the malls in December because of the parking, so leave the parking to us and just go shopping. We’ll stop at both ends of the Outlets at Castle Rock for some bargain shopping; then we’ll head to Park Meadows where you will enjoy the decorations and the shopping. You can eat lunch (on your own) at the food court or one of the many restaurants. The bus will board to return at 2:00 PM.

TRIP - Governor’s Mansion Holiday Decorations Viewing Tuesday, December 16 9:00 AM $8 ($11 non-members) There is something magical about stately buildings decorated for the holidays, so get in the spirit by joining us on this trip to the Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion. Note that you may need to stand in line outside, so dress for the weather. After seeing the decorations, we will head to Racine’s, a Senior Center favorite, for lunch (on your own).

You’ll love the music, the decorations and the costumes. A good old-fashioned heartwarming holiday musical is a must-see for every holiday season; when we went two years ago everyone raved about how good it was. We only have 20 tickets for these sold out shows, so don’t miss out.

WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION

We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone safe

and off icy and snowy roads, not always following the

school closures. Sometimes we may delay our opening.

There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message - if

there is no special message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS - our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen.

We also put notifications on Fox 31 and CW 2; 3) Check the homepage NEWS on our website as we will post it - you must actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will receive notices.

We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please understand that occasionally we have

technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message before coming to the Center,

just in case we had to close. Thank you for understanding.

LEAP stands for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program. It is a federally funded program that

operates from November 1 through April 30 and is designed to help low income households with

winter home heating costs. To be eligible you must pay home heating costs to an energy provider, fuel dealer, or as part of rent. You must be a permanent

legal resident of the US and Colorado, or have household members that are US citizens. Also, the maximum family household income must fit within certain guidelines. To find out more about LEAP,

and to get a LEAP application, call 1-888-775-5327. The applications are also available at local public assistance agencies.

Download from the web at DiscoverMyGoodwill.org/LEAP or

Look how many golfers finished their season this fall, playing in either 9-hole or 18-hole

another great season in 2015. We especially want to thank the committee that ran the

league, pictured below, left to right: Phyllis Tumey, Judy Parsons, Don Marshall and
