Files

•  Computer files can be considered as the modern counterpart of paper documents which traditionally are kept in office and library files

• This may be the source of the term.

• All electronic document, image, spreadsheet, PDF are files.

Folders/Directories

• Folders, also know as directories, are file system storage containers for files

• On most Windows systems, folders are identified by an icon containing an image a folderExample:

• Examples of folders are: • Documents

• Downloads

• Music

• Pictures

Drives

• Containers of folders and files

• Drives can be assigned letters

• Computer icons are pictograms displayed on computer screens to help users navigation a computer system

Shortcuts

• Keystroke combinations that start a process or perform a complicated task on a file

• Desktop applications that use an icon and when selected (clicked) start applications or open files

Networks

• The infrastructure that allows our computers to exchange information

• We have two networks• HPPL – our public access WIFI network

• Private – our secure network

Servers

• The computers that make up or network

• Some of our servers are virtual servers, some are actual servers

• Example Servers:Juno – Home to our public and shared drives

• Plato – Home to our printers

• Zeus – Father of Gods and men, who rules the Olympians of Mount Olympus and is a server on our network

Cloud

• The cloud is a metaphor for the internet

• We can store files on the cloud by creating account with companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox• Our Library Office 365 accounts give us access to Microsoft’s One Drive

• Our One Drive account allows us 25 Gigabytes and will soon be updated to 1 terabyte for each staff member

• Having cloud storage means you can save and access your cloud files from any internet enabled device from anywhere on the planet, providing you have access to the Internet.
