ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

There are times when we must act cautiously if

we would achieve a purpose (As the proverb says,

“Look before you leap”). There are also times when

we must act quickly or lose an opportunity (As an-

other proverb says, “Strike while the iron is hot.”)

Raoul Wallenberg usually had to make split

second decisions; to strike while the iron was hot.

The task he had undertaken was nothing less than

saving Jews condemned to Hitler’s “holocaust”.

Raoul was a fascinating, even an unlikely

“Scarlet Pimpernel”. A Swedish Lutheran, aged

thirty, he was employed as first secretary of the

Swedish legation in Hungary in the early 1940’s. He

had coaxed from the King of Sweden, his diplomatic

appointment to Budapest for precisely the purpose of

rescuing victims. He had also coaxed from the King

the authorization to give asylum to anybody who held

a Swedish protective pass. Handing out protective

passes to Hungarian Jews kept him constantly on the

go, but by means of protective passes, he was able to

save the lives of 100,000 Jewish people.

One day, for example, Raoul learned that a

crowd of Jewish Hungarians had been corralled and

packed into a train for a Nazi extermination camp. He

reached the railroad station just in the nick of time.

Brushing by the Nazi guard, he climbed on the roof of

the train and moved along from car to car handing

Swedish passes through the open doors and windows.

The German officers ordered him down. The Hungar-

ian Nazis shot at him. Nevertheless, Raoul finished

his work calmly and efficiently. Then he got down

and shouted, “All who have passes leave this train!”

The pass-holders came out and he directed them to a

fleet of autos bearing Swedish flags. Thus, he saved

the lives of dozens of Jews, and the Nazis were too

befuddled by his quick strategy to do anything about

it.

In 1945 Raoul Wallenberg was finally ar-

rested. Some think he may have been imprisoned in a

Russian camp. But even in prison he could only have

been consoled by the memory of the day when he had

“proceeded in haste” to rescue that train car full of

Jews.

ADORATION CHAPEL

“The Eucharist completes the restoration begun in the crib. Make merry, therefore, on

this beautiful day on which the sun of the Eucharist is rising. Let your gratitude never

separate that crib from the altar, the word made flesh from the God - Man made Bread

of Life in the Most Blessed Sacrament.”

~St. Peter Julian Eymard

“We see the Christmas event happen at every Mass. It’s like Christ is born at every Mass. Ok, so it’s an

altar and not a manger. Instead of looking like a baby, he looks like bread and wine. But it is the same

Christ. It is God in the flesh who we can see and adore. The Eucharist is the most profound reason to

believe that God is with us; not only for us to see and adore but to receive. God is not only with us in the

Eucharist, but He is within us.”

CHRISTMAS REFLECTION

In the readings for the first three Masses of Christmas (the Vigil Mass, the Mass During the Night, and

the Mass at Dawn) we celebrate the two births of Jesus: as son of Mary and as Son of God from all eter-

nity. Luke’s Christmas story details the events surrounding the birth of the human Jesus as son of Mary,

and therefore as son of David. All the details of the infant’s life point to this child as the fulfillment of

Israel’s hopes and the climax of their experience of God. But John’s Gospel at the last mass (the Mass

During the Day) focuses on the divine Jesus, the perfect image of God. The Word becomes flesh; the un-

thinkable is thought and spoken; the untouchable transcendent One reaches out and touches us. God joins

our family and shares our experience, our pains and our infirmities, our joys and our sorrows. In Jesus,

God teaches us how to be better at being human. Even more wondrous “God becomes human so that hu-

manity might become divine” (Pope Saint Leo the Great). Christmas celebrates this union of heaven and

earth, this connectedness, this communion which is at the heart of Christian faith. ~ Fr. Smith

PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Merry Christmas! Today our Savior, Christ the Lord

is born! The Word, Jesus Christ, was with God from

the beginning and brought life to the world. What an

awesome thought! Jesus being born in time reminds

all of us that our birth is not an accident. God

uniquely created each one of us and gave us life out

of love. He designed us with purpose and blessed

each one of us with gifts and talents. Jesus, Em-

manuel and Son of God, shows us who we are and

who we are meant to become!
