СontentsIt’s only a few weeks into the

New Year and so many exciting things are happening already.

First up, OTN did its first big fund raiser – we have assist-ed and promoted a lot of fund raising events but this is the first one we organized as far as I know. We had a movie night at the Paragon Deerfield 8 Movie Theater (our gracious hosts and partner in the event). The event raised money for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Awareness Fund. The Gard Gallery, the local art school and gallery for kids, which is owned and run by the delight-ful Elizabeth Gard, was also a big help with this project. Elizabeth had even offered to donate a large painting entitled “The Pink Lady” by artist George Torjussen and solicit donations toward pur-chase of the painting with pro-ceeds going to the charity but we were not really able to get that piece off the ground. If some-one would like to contribute the money – we want a minimum of $5000 – the painting will be hung locally with a plaque indicating donor(s). If you are interested, let me know. We had a great time with our movie night regardless and raised money and awareness for Lisa Boccard’s efforts.

Next, I want to announce some special editions of OTN – this we are very excited about!

At the beginning of February we will release our third Margate special edition. This publication is being produced jointly with The City of Margate and will be responsible for delivering local government and community in-formation to all of the residents and businesses in Margate – over 28,000 copies will be mailed out making it our biggest single edition. All of our digital sub-scribers will also receive a copy

JB’s Corner in early February – sign up for a FREE digital subscription to Our Town News publications at www.TheOurTownNews.com (left side of the page a little ways down from the top).

The next special edition will be tied to two local events – BizArt 2012 and Our Town America Festival 2012 – taking place over

the first two weekends of March. BizArt is a cele-bration of Coral Springs businesses and the City art project. Several sculptures have been re-cently installed along Sample Road for the competition. The ART

part of BizArt will focus on that competition by encouraging lo-cal residents to come out and see the artworks and vote on their fa-vorite. One of the entrants will be selected to be purchased and per-manently installed along Sample Road. The BIZ part of BizArt is a showcase of local businesses with great food and all kinds of interest-ing stuff lining the grounds of the event. It will be a great Sunday af-ternoon event on March 4 starting at noon with music and entertain-ment to make it a festive event for the whole family.

The first half of the OTN spe-cial edition being published for the event will have a map of the event location, schedule, pictures of all of the artworks and notes on the artists plus info on all of the event’s sponsors. Part Two of the special edition will be a guide to this year’s Our Town America Festival which attracts upwards of 100,000 peo-ple each year over the three day weekend (second weekend in March).

So much more is happening! But, it will have to wait for a fu-ture entry. We live in vibrant excit-ing times of unending possibilities. Remember, you can either mope around feeling sorry for yourself or treat life as an adventure where you just need to focus on what you really want to make all kinds of wonderful things happen! continued on page 10

Our Town America is gearing up for another year of fun for the entire community.

For 33 years, Our Town America has brought fun and entertainment to the City of Coral Springs. The three-day arts, entertainment and business festival will run from Friday, March 9th through Sunday, March 11th at the Coral Springs Sportsplex.

This year’s Our Town America theme was designed to inform the community about Our Town America’s dual pur-

pose: to provide a fun festival for the whole family, while rais-ing funds for programs and ser-vices of Community Non-profit Organizations in the Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade County areas. Many non-prof-it organizations will benefit this

year. “We have had a success-ful festival for over 33 years now, with great attendance and spon-sors. The missing link has been the lack of awareness about the true purpose of the festival,

which is to support not-for-prof-its in the community. The rides are fun, but this year we want to re-emphasize the giving that goes back to many worthwhile causes. After the weekend festi-

Each year, the City of Coral Springs takes on the task of plan-ning a weekend long celebra-tion in recognition of and honor-ing the life and messages of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, marked the 22nd Anniversary of the event and the MLK planning committee has worked tirelessly to ensure that the celebration was orchestrat-ed flawlessly.

The festivities were launched on January 13 at Church by the Glades, where a Business Luncheon, featuring speaker Willie E. Gary, was held.

Later that evening, a commu-nity celebration was held at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts which featured entertainment,

recognition of the student win-ners of the Art & Literary Exhibit Contest and a keynote address by Willie Gary.

The weekend events cul-minated with a Leadership/Diversity Day for Coral Springs high school and middle school students.

It was called “It’s a Day On, not a Day Off”. The activities fo-cused on the inspirational mes-sages of Dr. King of showing re-spect, working hard and giving back to your community.

The students were able to have roundtable discussions with their local city politicians.

The Coral Springs City Commis-sion recently honored the MLK Jr. Committee mem-bers and Sponsors of the event.

“Thank you all for what you do for this community. It is impor-

Helping our most vulnerable is why I ran for office. Sponsoring and helping to pass the Window of Opportunity Act of 2008 was my proudest moment in the Florida House of Representatives. The bill required insurance companies to cover Applied Behavioral Analysis therapies (ABA) for children on the autism spectrum. Getting au-tistic children between the ages of three and five these specialized therapies often allow them to be mainstreamed into school classes, learn socialization skills, become verbal, and have the potential to lead tremendous and fulfilling lives.

Children across Florida have benefitted from therapies their parents would not have otherwise been able to afford and an untold number of lives have been pos-itively changed as a result of our 2008 legislation.

In this year’s legislative session, as cuts and dereg-ulation run rampant, some Representatives are being heart-less in their pursuits. One such example of this is House Bill

7091 by Representative John Wood. The bill would repeal or undo the good work of 2008 from the Florida Statutes.

This mean spirited, high five to the insurance lobby re-moves not only the ABA cover-age, but requirements that insur-ance companies cover treatment for cleft pallet, mental and ner-vous disorders, and bone mar-row transplants.

If a society is to be judged by how it treats the most vulner-able among us, Florida gets a failing grade this legislative ses-sion, especially if HB 7091 is al-lowed to pass. It is an extreme and callous display of choosing industry profits over dire medi-cal needs.

I am doing everything in my power to defeat this awful legisla-tion, and I hope you will stand with me in making sure that the State of Florida will continue to protect our most at risk, in the words of Hubert Humphrey, “Those in the dawn of life, the twilight of life and the shadows of life.”

Peter Pappas has helped save the life of three peo-ple.

And he’s only 11 years old. The Coral Springs City

Commission recently honored Peter Pappas, a fifth grade stu-dent at Parkside Elementary School, for his courageous ac-tions. Pappas has saved his little brother from drowning, raised money for a teenage girl’s dou-ble lung transplant, and now helped catch a hit and run driv-er.

“He has done a number of remarkable things at such a young age,” said Coral Springs Mayor Roy Gold, as he hand-ed Pappas an award at a recent City Commission meeting.

His most recent act of brav-ery was chasing after a hit and run driver. Peter ran after a car as it left the scene of an acci-dent in Tamarac on January 12. He caught up to it, got a partial tag number and led Broward Sheriff’s deputies to the sus-pect’s parked car, where the suspect was arrested for leav-ing the scene of an accident and DUI among other charg-es, according to the arrest report.

“He was great, and I got to be honest with you, without this kid’s information we may nev-er have found the guy, let alone to put him behind the wheel,” Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Lovallo said of Peter.

Peter said he was acting on instinct. “I wasn’t thinking. I was reflexing. I just worried how I would get the guy.”

He also immediately came to the aid of a local girl who needed money for a lung trans-plant. When he was 8 years old, he started a daily coin collec-tion at Broadview Elementary and raised $3,688 for Brieanna, a 13-year-old girl with cystic fi-brosis who needed a double lung transplant.

When he was 5, his then-2-year-old brother Spiro took off his life jacket and jumped in the deep end of the fam-ily’s backyard pool pretend-ing he was Superman. Peter instantly came to his broth-er’s rescue.

“I reflexed again and saved

him,” said Peter, who is also known for his friendly demean-or while talking to customers at his family’s restaurant, Pappas Restaurant.

The local boy plans to con-tinue helping others by follow-ing in his Uncle’s footsteps and becoming a Navy Seal one day. He hopes his peers will also learn the importance of giving back to others in need.

“I hope other kids can help people and make them feel good about themselves,” said Peter.

ONLY $20 TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP BUT HASNEVER BEEN TO A CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE

(Or Hasn’t Been In a Long Time)

MEET THE DOCTOR:Prior to obtaining my Doctor of Chi-

ropractic Degree at Life University in Marietta, GA, I received my bachelors of Biology degree. I am nationally and state board certified in Chiropractic and Physiotherapy. Originally from Florida, I stayed in Georgia and opened a success-ful chiropractic practice after graduating.

I have a deep passion for and am a speaker on women’s health issues such as fibromyalgia, migraine headaches and pregnancy.

I am a very proud mother of 2 beauti-ful sons, who are 2 years old and 4 months old. My husband and I are a great chiro-practic team that work side by side in our beautiful office to help educate and bring health to our community, by utilizing the latest techniques and therapies.

THE PATIENT AND ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS A RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT OR BE REIMBURSED FOR PAYMENT FOR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE FREE DISCOUNTED FEE OR REDUCED FEE SERVICE, EXAMINATION OR TREATMENT.

Dear Friend,If you’ve ever thought about go-

ing to a chiropractor but you’ve hesi-tated because you weren’t sure it was right for you, please read on…

My name is Dr. Aliyah Stotter, I’d like to show my appreciation for the warm welcome the community has shown me by announcing Febru-ary 20 - March 1st as Community Appreciation Week. It’s my way of saying THANK YOU to the people who have been so helpful and mean so much. I hope this will benefit you and yours.

I’ve agreed to “giveaway” (to any-body who asks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20.

That’s Right - $20.I’ve helped many people in the

Coral Springs, Parkland and North Broward area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. I would now like to introduce you to the many benefits my profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you’re suffering from any of the following conditions.• Migraine headaches• Lower-back pain• Sciatica• Carpal Tunnel• Neck pain• Arm Numbness• Arthritis• Herniated Discs• Degenerative Discs• “Whiplash”

And a whole host of other prob-lems, ranging from dizziness to ring-ing in the ears. These symptoms can be caused whenever the vertebrae in your spine are out of alignment be-cause this “misalignment” directly affects your nervous system.

Fortunately, if you’re suffering from such problems or similar con-ditions right now, they may be re-lieved or eliminated by proper chiro-practic treatment (commonly called “adjustments”).

So if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what it can do for you, now is the best time to do so because…

Right now $20 will get you all the services I normally charge my new patients $200 for!

For a Limited Time Only

FEbRuARy 20 - MARCH 1ST$20.00 will get you all

of the services. I normally charge new patients $200.00 for!!

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you’ll get…

• An in-depth private consultation about your health and well being

• A chiropractic spinal examination…• A set of specialized X-rays to determine

if a misalignment in your spine is caus-ing your pain or symptoms… (Nobody gives these kinds of X-rays FREE. They would usually cost you at least $100)…

• An analysis of your X-rays and spinal exam results so we can see what needs to be done to help.

• Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain.

• Answers to all your most probing ques-tions about chiropractic care and what it can do for you...

The appointment won’t take long at all. And like I said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays). But now, as part of this one time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiroprac-tic care and how it can help you eliminate the pain you’re feeling. Before you come in, though, you’ll probably want to know a little bit more about me.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLy WORK

Absolutely! When you come in I’ll provide you with studies that show why chiropractic is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof ” on how well chiropractic works is what the patient says about it.

FIbROMyALGIA, HEADACHES &

LOW bACK PAIN“Coral Springs Spine & Nerve has

helped decrease my lower back pain sub-stantially! I originally came in because I have Fibromyalgia, headaches and low back pain. I feel that the chiropractic care has helped me by improving my pain, muscle spasms, and improve the ringing in my ears. I’m even sleeping better.I have been to so many doctors that haven’t lis-tened to me and I feel that Dr. Craig and Dr. Aliyah really listen and really care!”-Sincerely, Elizabeth Hauser,Photographer, Margate

SHOuLDER PAIN, ARM PAIN & NECK PAIN

“When shoulder and arm pain started to affect my house work, I came into Coral Springs Spine & Nerve seeking re-lief. Chiropractic Care has taken my pain away and I am able to clean my house and not be cautious about doing daily ac-tivities anymore. I would describe CSSN as a kind and caring place. The amaz-ing part of Chiropractic Care is that… IT WORKS!”-Thank you,Marcia Jacobs, Homemaker, Coral Springs

SCIATICA & LOW bACK PAIN

“Before I started chiropractic care I had pain going down my leg and limited range of motion. Now I can wake up without severe pain, so I get my day moving faster! I have learned that although lifetime wellness is a process for me, the doctors at CSSN continue to reinforce and educate me. I can even play more tennis with my daughter. I am amazed at how chiropractic care has worked so fast!” -Thank you,Patrick barbanes,IT Manager, Coral Springs

HERNIATED DISCS & STENOSIS

“I had been suffering with low back pain for a VERY long time, so I decided to check out Coral Springs Spine & Nerve after a friend referred me. I tried every

outlet for my pain and nothing had worked. I also had epidurals that failed and left me still in pain. Before coming to CSSN, I could not sit comfortably on the sofa, I could not walk for long peri-ods of time and I could not pick up my kids without excruciating pain. Chiro-practic Care has significantly decreased my pain and I can go about my daily routine normally. I am amazed how, in such a short amount of time, I have seen improvement!”-Thank you so much,Ann Gables,Banker, Coral Springs

Our Town America, Inc., a not for profit 501 (c) 3 orga-nization’s Board has put on the event every year.

A program of giving back to the community with Our Town America proceeds was estab-lished. Non-profit organiza-tions involved with the festival receive funding from the pro-ceeds for their various worth-while charities.

Though the weekend event is known for its amusements, classic car show, the “Miss Our Town America” Beauty Pageant and booth, this very important

purpose of giving back to the community has made the event very meaningful for the commu-nity.

Dear Dr. Cajar,I have been suffering

with bleeding gums. Do you have any suggestions that may help?

The percentage of people who suffer from this condition is probably greater than you may think. There are a few reasons that people may come to devel-op this problem; but nutritional-ly speaking, I would love to give you my opinion. Due to the typi-cal diet in our country, many peo-ple are lacking proper nutrients to support the healthy function of the body as a whole. The con-tents of Vitamin C complex are found naturally in our food supply,

it has many components, in addi-tion to ascorbic acid, (Vitamin C found over the counter is typical-ly only ascorbic acid); it is a very essential nutrient complex. A pri-mary role of Vitamin C complex is to form collagen, the connec-tive tissue that cements the cells of the body together. Without it, the body could begin to essentially

“breakdown”. Vitamin C complex supports and promotes a healthy immune system and supports the connective tissue throughout the body.

You may notice bleeding gums as a first sign when you are nu-tritionally deficient in Vitamin C complex. The gums are an ex-posed and very sensitive connec-

tive tissue. In addition to prop-er oral care, in my office I would recommend a product called Cataplex C made by Standard Process. It combines food derived Vitamin C complex, in addition to other ingredients that help main-tain healthy immune, cardiovas-cular, musculoskeletal and cellu-lar function.

With regular intake overtime, blood vessels begin to strengthen.

You may notice your gums stop bleeding and teeth tighten, as the oxygenation of the cells becomes more efficient. I would be happy to discuss this further with you. If I may be of assistance, please con-tact Anne at my office to schedule an appointment.

Please email any natural healthcare questions to [email protected] so that we may use them in future articles.

It’s no secret that we have been in a buyer’s market for quite some time now.

While this can be extremely frus-trating for the seller in today’s mar-ket, there are ways to prepare and tri-umph.

With a sound strategy in place, anyone can sell in this market; but like most things in life, it takes work, care and time.

So hike up your pants, roll up your sleeves, and let’s get that home SOLD!

Know your hold costs

The #1 factor to be aware of in a buyer’s market is your monthly hold costs. As days on the market climb, your potential net descends.

Residents may soon see more mobile food vendors popping up at city events.

Coral Springs City Commissioners recently approved a pilot program to allow mobile food vendors for temporary events on public property. The pilot pro-gram will last for two years.

“The pilot program tests this concept. Presently, the only plac-es that mobile food vendors can sell are private property. We want to test it out at pubic proper-ties for a couple of years,” said Coral Springs City Manager Erdal Donmez.

This provides the opportunity

for mobile food vendors to be al-lowed at any city-sponsored and approved event, according to Coral Springs City Attorney John Hearn.

“They must have a proper per-mit or be stationary during the time of the event. The pilot program will look into how we can tweak the program later on,” said Hearn.

Coral Springs City Commissioners were in favor of this pilot program to allow mobile food vendors on public property.

“I am happy to see this move forward. Let’s see what will come out of this opportunity,” said Coral Springs Mayor Roy Gold.

Coral Springs To Allow Mobile Food Vendors For Events On Public

Property

The contest between the South Florida firefighters for the best bar-beque ribs is on!

At Markham Park in Sunrise, the Metro Broward Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association will be hosting the annual “Fire and Feast” rib cooking competition. On February 26, all of the firefighters will suit up and come out and compete to barbeque the best tasting ribs.

Be prepared for more than just cook out fun. With a $5 admission fee, Markham Park will be loaded with activities for the entire family to en-joy beginning at Noon and ending at 5 pm.

There will be great music, a rock wall, bounce houses, as well as vari-ous vendors that will make this event very entertaining.

But the main event is the rib tasting. Kids under three get in for free. With the $5 admission, the ribs will be yours to taste, but a panel of expert judges makes the fi-nal decision.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Metro Broward Professional Firefighters Benevolent

Association. This organization is com-mitted to serving the Broward com-munity and giving back to those in need. All members include firefight-ers from various fire departments in Broward.

“My favorite part of the event has always been the actual competition. I love to see all of the firefighters go head to head against each other,” said Dana Shumate, Office Manager for the organization.

This event has expanded since its inception. It used to include just the nine-firefighting districts of Broward County, Coral Springs Fire Department, Parkland Fire Department and others. Due to the overwhelming success of the event, Palm Beach and other fire departments have joined the fun. Of course, they are there to support the organization, but also love competing against each other.

With the donation of ribs from Doris’ Italian Market, the Metro Broward Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association is able to make this event possible.

For more information, to sign up for a vendor table or to make a dona-tion, please visit www.3080benevolent.com.

a buyer’s market, this is a factor that cannot be ignored.

When factoring in hold costs, an offer of $340,000 in your first week is greater than $350,000 six months from the list. A $3000 monthly hold cost is a fair average for a $350,000 home.

That’s $18,000 after six months. In essence, the 2nd offer six months later is a relative $332,000.

If you had settled for $340,000 on the first offer, you would have saved $8000! It is imperative that you know your hold costs and factor them into all negotiations.

Get Real

The biggest problem we face in today’s Real Estate market is the con-tinuing effect of the bubble bursting. While it’s unfortunate, it is, as they say, what it is.

We cannot fool ourselves into believing our homes are worth what they were in the good ‘ole days.

We HAVE to be realistic with to-day’s market and price accordingly. We always want to maximize our po-tential dollar but pricing out of mar-ket is simply the wrong way to do so.

Understanding true market value, pricing accordingly and making your home stand out is the way to success in a buyer’s market.

Market effectively and consistently

Marketing mediums have and continue to change at a rapid pace. A buyer’s market clearly carries more inventory than is standard.

Thus, we need to STAND OUT from the crowd! With so much com-petition around be sure to work with an agent who understands marketing to not only today’s buyers, but to your specific buyer base.

This is not the type of market where one ad in a Sunday paper is effective. There needs to be a con-sistent flow of effective marketing until you reach your goal. Without it, you are going to be lost in the pack.

We cannot control the markets we find ourselves in, we can only act accordingly. Remember that selling is possible in any market.

Make a plan, hire the right agent and your sale will be a suc-cess!

Don’t be stuck in an unhappy ‘co-coon’. You are a unique butterfly…. Fly to your ‘relationship freedom’!

This is the message of local au-thor and relationship expert Victoria Howard’s new national movement and paradigm called the Butterfly Movement. The purpose is to unite men and wom-en back together through co-indepen-dence and it stems from her new book,

“The Butterfly Effect”, also co-authored by Allan Jay Friedman, an Emmy award winning author, director and lyricist.

The movement focuses on an Eleven Step program that takes you out of the ‘cocoon’, you have been living in due to low self esteem or abuse, and through the metamorphosis stage into becoming the free beautiful butterfly you always were.

“The book and movement guide you through the Butterfly Effect: the 11 Step Program, into the person you were cre-ated to be,” said Howard, who credits her success and accomplishments to

her father, Peter Roccasano, for always encouraging her to follow her dream and be true to herself.

Chapters have also blossomed in various states throughout the country, in-cluding Florida, California, Pennsylvania, and on March 24, Victoria will be start-ing the first ‘Chapter’ in Spring, Texas, at the renowned women’s spa, ZEN SPA. King Ayi, the King of Togo in Africa, is also in support of the movement and will be opening a Chapter.

Once a month, the chapters hold meetings focusing on empowerment, so-cializing, guest speakers, and network-ing.

Victoria Howard hopes this move-ment changes people’s lives like it has hers. Howard has been called the wom-an with nine lives. She started her career as a professional model, dancer, and a beauty queen; she even represented West Virginia in the Mrs. USA Pageant. She was a race horse trainer who once owned “The Two Year-Old Filly Of The Year.”

Although she co-owns three race-

horses at Pompano Park Racetrack to-day; she leaves the training to five-time world record holder, Mel Turcotte. She has authored various books, “Why Women Love Bad Boys”, “I Am Woman: The Fourth and Final Wave in the Feminist Movement”, “Snow Right and the Seven Butterflies”, and “The Butterfly Effect”. She is also the Founder of “The Kick ‘Em To The Curb” Dating Game launched at Boca Raton’s Blue Martini.

But it was her time spent visiting the Aboriginal Tribe in Australia after a divorce that launched her ‘Spiritual Perfume: Sariel and Ariel”, which ulti-mately started the Butterfly Movement. After Howard gave her earrings to a translator, the Chief of the Tribe asked her to stay for three days. He told her,

“There is something very important that you have to do in your life.” When she asked what it was, the Chief responded,

“You will know when the time is right.”For years she searched for that ‘pur-

pose’. When she founded the “Butterfly Movement,” she knew immediately that

this was what the Aboriginal Chief had meant, This was her calling.

“In 2010 by an accidental meeting, she met Allan, who is a renowned lyr-icist and producer. Together, they cor-roborated -long distance- and “The Butterfly Movement was born! Allan Jay Friedman is such a wonderful per-son. Our purpose is to unite mankind in equality, love and harmony.

It’s a new wave of thinking to bring men and women back together. One person at a time, we will make that change in the world,” said Howard.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to ‘the homeless and bat-tered children and animals in the world’ through Dr. Richard McKinsey, who is head of the Children’s Hospital in LA.

The next Chapter meeting will be held on February 23 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at Gizzis Coffee in Delray.

For more information on the Butterfly Movement, please visit www.Butterflyeffect.us, e-mail [email protected] or call 561-999-0292.

The Florida Pokers Baseball Team held a “family” reunion for their longtime coach- Mike Roberts.

The reunion included guests, such as baseball players, other coaches, and umpires, along with the coach’s family. The celebra-tion was planned by Roberts’ fami-ly, including his son Lenny Roberts.

Mike Roberts, the Founder of the Original Florida Poker Baseball Club and the honoree of the reunion, has dedicated his life to the game of baseball and help-

ing children through the game. The coach, who founded the

club in 1990, has said that he coaches kids because he “wants to see them smile.”

Through his club, Roberts dedicated himself to helping teach and train high school boys about the game of baseball; he spent countless hours at practices and searching for tough competition for his team.

With his strong knack for com-radeship and sportsmanlike con-duct, Roberts asked his players to thank their parents, umpires, and ground crew after each game. In addition to his superb coaching

abilities, Roberts has helped over 300 players gain college baseball scholarships.

Also, since 1990, during sum-mers he took his team around the country for them to play 80 games over a period of 80 days. Presently, Roberts coaches his grandsons, who are on various Pokers’ di-visions on Coral Glades High School’s field. Roberts has sus-tained many wins as a byproduct of hard work and at 70 years old has said that he will coach for as long as he can.

“Baseball is the name…life ed-ucation is the game” is the Poker Baseball club’s mission statement.

Founded in 1990, the club’s goals are to help as many kids play base-ball in college to further their ed-ucation and establish a program in which serious baseball players can play in competitive games.

These goals have come into fruition because 96% of former players matriculate to college.

The club has certainly grown over the years, according to Faline Roberts.

“The Original Florida Poker Baseball Team went from hav-ing 1 team to now 5 teams- all in Coral Springs. Also, several for-mer “Pokers” are on the Major League’s Roster,” she said.

I Have A DreamBy Devin MakovskyEagle Ridge Elementary student

Do you have a dream you want to come true? I do. I want to become a baseball

player for the Yankees. So here are some reasons why I want to become a baseball player.

To begin with, I love baseball. I want to become a baseball play-er because I am usually on the baseball field every day because

I want to become the next Derek Jeter.

In addition, I am on a trav-el baseball team called the Renegades. My baseball team goes all over Florida just like the Yankees travel the United States.

In conclusion, baseball is a very rough sport and is not easy to play. That’s why if I am very good at baseball. It will be awesome to step on a baseball field almost ev-ery day.

Hands of a Magician! That’s what many people and pros would say about John McEnroe. That guy could hit the ball anywhere from any part of the court and make it look so easy. His touch around the net was and still is to many con-sidered second to none. So how do we get to become magicians? Well, first we need to be born with his God given talent. So let’s for-get that!

Now moving on to what we can do. I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work alongside a for-mer Top 5 player in the world and heard a story that I believe to be true; it was when McEnroe was a young aspiring junior. McEnroe’s coach saw him fooling around with some other juniors, hitting weird little touch shots around the net.

They would play within the short court area not hitting hard, just trying to out-touch each oth-er. The coach was furious, told the kids that if they continued messing around, they should go down to the last court and work out them-selves. I think the games worked out pretty well for Mr. McEnroe. Nowadays, most of us coach-es teach and play these games as much as possible.

There are several mini-ten-nis styles of games you could play. I’ll give you a few to try and explain what their purposes are: (1) – Angle’m Out – Take two cones and place them about 2 to 3 feet from the net on the singles side-line. One cone should be

on the deuce court and the oth-er on the opposite side of the net’s deuce court. Hitting only fore-hands, you and your opponent are trying to knock over each oth-er’s cone.

Play to 5 points and it should take you a little while. It’s not very easy to hit the cone. You’re trying to work on hitting topspin angles in this game, so don’t slow your racquet speed down.

Try to get under the ball and brush up on it quickly. This will allow you to get the ball up a few feet above the net and then down quickly at the cone. Hitting a good topspin ball will also give your opponent trouble hitting their shot at your cone if they don’t move well.

Don’t forget, you can switch up the cones to work the back-hand side as well. (2) – One Box Mini-Tennis – In this game, both you and your opponent stand in one of the service boxes. Both players will start at the net, with one of you ready to drop a ball.

For you sports fans, especial-ly tennis fans, check out these two great events played in the same week at the same venue at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center on Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Delray Beach.

We’ve all seen the great ten-nis champions of today and yes-terday play in all the tournaments around the world, like the US Open and Wimbledon on TV and now you can see them in person

no more than 20 minutes from anywhere in Broward and Palm Beach County.

Star players like Andy Roddick and John Isner and the doubles champs the Bryan Brothers will be playing in the International Tennis Championships against tennis stars from countries around the world for a $500,000 purse.

The other tournament, the ATP Champions Tour featuring yesterday’s champs like John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Michael

The player with the ball will actually place the ball on the net and let it drop to their opponent’s side.

Yep! That’s what I said. Let the ball drop over to their side and let them figure out how to get the ball over to your side with-out you finishing the point on them. In this game, there is ab-solutely, NO HITTING THE BALL HARD! Remember, this is a touch game. You can lob, touch the ball short or put a crazy spin on the ball. It doesn’t matter, just no hit-ting hard. It becomes a very inter-esting game if both players think well. There is actually a lot of

strategy in this game. Play to as many points as you like.

We usually play to 11, but it real-ly doesn’t matter. (3)

– Volleyball Tennis – If you have four or more players, this is

a really fun game. You can either play within the two service boxes or use the whole court.

The rules are just like vol-leyball that you’d play at the beach. Three touches are allowed. Passing the ball to a player clos-er to the net usually will give you a favorable result. But, once again…NO HITTING HARD! No spiking or full swinging shots. Remember, these are all touch games.

There are many, many more fun touch games that can be used to soften up your hands. Tennis on T.V. is huge. Tons of power out there, but take a close look, there is still a lot of skilled touch shots being used as well.

Being a good tennis play-er doesn’t always mean that you need to kill the ball to win match-es. So go ahead and try to be-come a magician on the tennis court and make your opponents disappear. Good Luck and Good Playing!

There is a new Sheriff in town that is there to protect your pets! That’s right… a new approach to keeping and making your pet healthy! Veterinary medicine, with its synthetic, ineffective drugs and procedures is only making the pets we love and care for suffer more than ever. Yes, that is right; we are drawing a line in the sand. We want answers!

We are sold “flea preventions” only to have our pets suffer more than ever with flea problems we never saw forty years ago! We give our pets poison to prevent heart-worms when it wasn’t a problem thirty years ago.

And with the preventive drugs, our pets are dying of liver and kidney failure, suffering from de-mentia and endocrine problems. Spay and neuter has not helped the unwanted pet population.

You see a lot of new terms here. We are replacing veteri-nary care with pet health care… because that’s what we want! We are replacing “pet over-popula-

tion” with what it really is… “Un-wanted pet population”. There is NO flea or heartworm preven-tion… only treatment. Why would you treat any living creature with a toxic drug when they don’t have the problem? Don’t believe me??? Look at the warning label with the DRUG… it’s not a preventive, but a legal DRUG!

Why have liver and kidney problems become common-place with our pets? These are the body’s filtering systems.

The more toxins we put into the body, the more work they must do. These toxins actually kill the cells in the kidney and liv-er that is doing the work so there is no longer any defense. And the toxins come from where? Look at the commercial pet foods with the hundreds of colors, stabi-lizers, preservatives, processing agents, and flavoring that are in every “nutritionally balanced and approved bag”.

What about that monthly poi-son to keep your pet flea, heart-

They will exceed your expec-tations with thousands of unique items, such as books and videos on quilting, embroidery, pillowcases, purses and much, much more.

The moment you step into Sunshine Sewing and Quilting, you feel the pres-ence of the artistic flair of owner Fay Nicoll’s designer techniques, as your eyes scan the many quilting patterns cre-ated by her vision. Fay started Fay Nicoll Judaica Designs three years ago and has received much praise. She designs

Judaica quilt patterns, fabrics, and con-temporary quilts. Each one is a master-piece and speaks for itself. Fay’s newest line of Judaica Fabric is about to be re-leased in time for Quilt Market in May in Kansas City, Missouri. So look for it soon at your local shop!

Fay followed in her mother Syma’s footsteps. Her mother was her mentor as a seamstress and violinist. Fay inherit-ed not only her mother’s musical talents but also her sewing talents, even to the extent that while singing on Broadway she designed and sewed all her own gowns. Shortly af-ter moving to South Florida, her passion for sewing continued and Fay bought a Janome dealership. After having an acci-dent at the shop and being confined to a wheelchair for three months, she started quilting and a new passion ensued. Fay runs the business, along with her hus-band Richard and daughter Jennifer and a wonderful staff, who is knowledgeable,

friendly and always there to help the customer. Quite often, Fay’s 7- year-old granddaughter Lexie joins in the fun of the children’s sewing classes.

Fay wanted to share that love of quilt-ing with her clients so that they too can create their own masterpiec-es. “It’s absolutely the most rewarding feeling when you see someone walk in and say they’re not able to do anything and then walk out with a finished project. They

enjoy doing it and want to come back,” said Fay.

Find a variety of first quality fab-rics from the top manufacturers - Hoffman, Michael Miller, Blank Quilting, Alexander Henry, Moda, and many more. “Each one of them is different,” said Fay. There’s something for every-one, adults or children! Come share the fun on Mystery nights or indulge your-self and join a hands-on quilting or sew-ing class for beginners to advanced level.

The rock star of the quilting world, Kaffe Fassett, was at Sunshine for two design workshops this past October, the second time in three years, to a sold-out audi-ence of enchanted quilters. Embroidery Artist Momo-Dini is coming for a work-shop on Saturday, February 18 at 10 am. Sunshine is a certified Janome sewing machine dealer. Classes to learn all the different machines and computerized digitizing are Fay’s forte and given at the shop with the purchase of any machine.

“I love what I do. It’s still show busi-ness. The moment someone comes in, you’re on!” she said.

worm, and parasite free? So, if you use these drugs, why do vets charge you to test for them and why do you still have a flea and tick problem?

Yes, this is the “wake up call” to everyone that has a pet. Medicine and veterinary medicine is ex-actly that, a science based around drugs and sur-gery to eliminate symp-toms.

We are leading a pro-active change to assure YOUR pet their optimal opportuni-ty to lead a healthy life. Drugs don’t correct the physiological chal-lenge your pet has. It only masks the symptom.

We want and strive to make the whole body healthy. If this is your goal, then you need to see and talk with us. My forty-plus years of ex-perience have been devoted to real advancements in the health and well-being of your pets.

We no longer want you seeking

a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to guide your health program for your pet, but rather a Pet Health Care Advisor or Doctor, someone that will lead you down a path of positive choices to optimize your pets’ health through sound scien-tifically based principles.

Nature has provided us with a great example, which is why we have such a diversified array of living creatures still on the earth. They survived well before we,

This review is dedicated to my former legal colleague and longtime personal friend, the late Karl Seif.

“It just keeps getting better and better.” But would we expect any-thing less from Robert Crais’ latest contribution, The Sentry (another Joe Pike adventure)?

Robert Crais is a yarnmeis-ter par excellence! He is the au-thor of 16 previous novels, in-cluding several in the Joe Pike series. I’ve favorably critiqued two in the Joe Pike genre (The Watchman and The First Rule), as well as several other Crais

masterpieces and shall do like-wise with The Sentry.

Reprised from previous Pike tales, include Joe Pike, Elvis Cole, Jack Straw, Lucy Chenier, and Terry Babinette. It’s good to see all of you fine folks again!

The pace of The Sentry is quick. This alacrity is no doubt aided by the very believable dia-logue. Since certain of the chap-ters are entitled with the names of several of the dramatis personae, these particular chapters are re-lated from that person’s stand-point.

The size of the cast of char-acters is moderate. I’m not hap-py with bloated dramatis personae with innumerable folks flitting in

and out of the verbal landscape appearing briefly and then just as quickly disappearing, never to be seen or heard from again.

Graphic word-pictures are an integral part of The Sentry. So, “...warped scrub oak branches with arthritic fingers with leaves.” For a truly weird one, “Daniel had never seen rain fall up before.”

Then, “Picket-fence ribs pro-truded through the chest and in-ternal organs bulged like blue balloons from the abdomen.”

Then, “The twilight sun melt-ed into a magneta haze...”, and

“The sky was a beautiful sangria by then....”

To continue this beautiful and colorful “artwork”, we have

“Finally the canyon swallowing his voice.”

Well done, Mr. Crais! Before scribing for Putnam,

Mr. Crais penned for Doubleday. Doubleday’s loss is Putnam’s gain, and The Sentry certainly proves it.

But things be-gin to change when Andrew, his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and popular class-mate Steve (Michael B. Jordan) discov-er a mysterious sub-stance that leaves them with incredible powers.

As their abilities become more pow-erful, the teens’ lives spin out of control when their dark-er sides begin to emerge. Andrew’s

camera captures the un-folding events.

The Woman in Black

Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), recently wid-owed and still grieving the loss of his wife, is sent to a remote village to put a deceased eccentric’s af-fairs in order. But soon af-ter his arrival, it becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a deadly se-cret. Kipps discovers that his late client’s house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is trying to find some-one and something she lost, and that no one -- not even the chil-dren -- is safe from her terrible wrath.

Underworld Awakening

Vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) awakes to find her-

self captured by humans and with her human-lycan lover, Michael, nowhere to be found.

She soon discovers that she has been asleep for a decade, but gave birth to her daughter Eve. Shunned by nearly all sur-viving vampires, save one (Theo James), even Selene seems pow-erless against her latest oppo-nent- a genetically enhanced ly-can.
