My father taught memany great lessons. There were three important elements of life thatI learned from my father;patience, faith and love. Myfather held a great deal of lovein his heart for my mom, my sis-ter, and I. He dearly loved hisparents, sister, and seven broth-ers. He held a great love in hisheart for America, LincolnPark, the scouting movement, his church, and his work. In1960 Dad began working as a

long-distance truck driver forMain Trucking and Rigging, inElmwood Park. He workedthere for nearly 30 years, retir-

ing in June of 1989. One of thedearest and fondest memories Ihave of how Dad loved his job, centered upon how serious hetook his responsibility of bring-ing the people of New YorkCity their Christmas Tree formany, many years. Truly theelements of patience, faith, andlove shined forth from the coreof Dads heart in carrying outthis big job.

Usually around the mid-dle of October, Dads bosswould let Dad know where hewould have to pick up theChristmas Tree to be deliveredin Manhattan. I rememberthose evenings, after supper,Dad would sit at the diningroom table and quietly studymaps of roads, highways, and

byways from Maine to NewYork City. I distinctly remem-ber that nine out of ten times,

New Yorks Christmas Treecame from Maine. When I was

in grammar school, highschool, and even my first twoyears of college, I alwaysenjoyed the time period of studying and doing my home-work at the dining room tablewhile Dad routed his trip.

I would be studying U.S.history, doing math problems,or studying chemistry and Dadwould say to me, almost hadit. This bridge on this road isgoing to be too low. Or hewould say, well never be ableto get permits to bring a wideload through this little town. Then Dad would start all overagain, working on figuring away to bring New York City itsChristmas Tree. Dads exampletaught me the principle of thegood value of patience.

Sometimes I would getstuck on a math problem, or ona chemistry problem, or just behaving a tough time in writinga composition. Dad would lookup from his maps and say some-thing like, Richie, it looks likeyoure stuck on a problem. Iwould tell Dad that, yes I washaving a tough time with amath problem. Dad would say, dont worry about it, youll getit. It just takes patience.

Dads annual responsibili-ty to bring New York City itsChristmas Tree was a goldenopportunity for him to teachme the power of positive faith. So many times I remember Dadwould call home while he wasin Maine or New Hampshirestaying over while the work-men prepared the incrediblytall pine tree for its destiny tobe Americas showcaseChristmas Tree. Dad would ask

Mom to put me on the phone.Even when I was in grammarschool and then into highschool, he would tell me thathe was counting on me to be

the man of the house while hewas away.

Sometimes Dad would getsnowed in, or held up by aproblem, or simply have toreroute the trip because of asurprise little bridge in somesmall town that wasnt clearlydefined on any of the maps.

Richie, it looks like Imgoing to be held up here. Itssnowing pretty heavy. Youknow how to change the fusesdown the cellar if any of themburn out. Im counting on youson. I have faith in you Richie,Dad would say to me over thephone. I remember that 90 per-cent of the time, Dad wouldfinish his long distance phonecall by telling me that he hadfaith in me. I know that Dad

held a strong faith in the goodLord. Often when he gotcaught in snow in bringing thetall pine tree to Manhattan, hewould say to me over the

phone, Richie, Ive got faiththe good Lord is going to helpget this tree to New York Cityin time. Dad never once waslate in delivering New YorkCity its big Christmas Tree.

And of course, Dad lovedhis job. He truly loved workingwith people, talking with peo-ple, and having a purpose tobring New York City itsChristmas Tree. And, I knowDad truly loved the Lord.

Today, in memory, I lookback with fondness of heart of those innocent days when Dadand I would spend so muchtime together studying at theold dining room table. On Maytwelfth of 2006, my father wenthome to be with the Lord.

    Anthropological evi-dence suggests that

ancient cultures prac-ticed regular oral hygiene.Researchers have found recipesfor teeth cleaning and breathfreshening preparations thatdate to ancient Egyptian,Chinese, Greek and Romanpeoples. The ingredientsincluded charcoal, fruit anddried flowers, but theres nocredible evidence about effec-tiveness of these products.

Oral care products firstappeared when toothpaste wasdeveloped in the 1800s.Mouthwash was mass producedcommercially in the late 1800s.The early brands containedalcohol to stabilize the formula, but today cetylpyridnium chlo-ride(CPC) is the germ killingproduct that doesnt need alco-

hol stabilization and is found inmany healthcare products. Its

germ killing ability is altered forkilling germs that cause dentalplaque and gingivitis.

There are now mouthrinses for special needs such asalcohol free, sensitive mouths, braces and natural formulas. The scientific evidenceremains limited to improvingbreath and preventing plaque

    buildup. No mouthwash is a

replacement for a regular oralcare routine of twice dailybrushing and flossing. Mouthrinse should always be usedwith a daily routine of oralhygiene to maintain good den-tal health.

W ith the holidayshere, we are all inthe mood for somefestivities. We plan parties andcook for celebrations, but whatdo our pups do? They are stillthe same clever, curious rascalthey ever were. Somethingthat the holiday season doesbring some puppy hazards.Everyone wants to enjoy theholidays without a single hic-cup, so make sure that youmake your home holiday safefor dogs.

Seasonal decorations. The holidays bring about avariety of color and light thatmake the atmosphere lookquite magnificent. But beware

of nosy pups with mischief onthe mind. Power cords can bevery dangerous for a pup thatlikes to chew. Make sure they

are hidden out of reach so noone gets hurt. Besides lighting,we often decorate our homeswith pretty plants such as

mistletoe, poinsettia and holly.Unfortunately, all these plantsare actually very toxic espe-cially for dogs. Consider going

with a synthetic likeness thatlooks just as pretty. (And youcan use it again next year save some money!) Besides thehouse decorations, presentsoften get decorated, too.Wrapping paper is fun for bothman and dog, but we dont usu-ally eat it. A pup may find itquite tasty, but will likely justend up with a belly-ache.

Hot dog. Candles makethe house look and smell nice, but there is a bit of a hazard tothis. A happy tail or a nosysnout can knock a candle overand burn your pup or catchsomething on fire. If you havecandles, keep them up highand never leave the home

without making sure theyreout. Another concern is thefireplace. Those flickeringflames can intrigue a curiouspup, so make sure you use afireplace protector or screen tokeep any noses from beingsinged.

Time for eats. The festivi-ties and food are going to bealmost every dogs weakness.Honestly, who can resist a tastypiece of whats cooking? Itemson the table top left unattend-ed can make a likely target foran eager pup, so keep thingsout of reach and no paws on

How do I choose where to go for Vein

    Treatment?

The vein treatment I received was great. I am very happy with the procedures done on my legs. I wish I had done this earlier.

In todays competitivemedical environment, itseems there are manyphysicians offering veincare as a part of theiroverall practices. The list

includes virtually all specialties, and mostadvertise themselves as Vein Special-ists, even though they may not have re-ceived any specialized training in vein

    procedures.

Choosing where to go for vein treat-ment may be just as important as theinitial decision to seek treatment. Hereare a few basic ideas that might helpyou decide.

    THE TREATING PHYSICIAN

Did you know that taking a moment tocheck the credentials of your physician isa valuable first step? While many doctorsmay claim to be experts, only a qualifiedvein specialist has the broad knowledgeof your venous system to accurately diag-

nose the causes of your venous condi-tion. A qualified vein specialist has the ex-perience, expertise and the necessaryequipment to treat your varicose veinswith exactly the right procedures tailoredto your specific problem. Many part timephlebologists (a medical specialist trainedin the diagnosis and treatment of disor-ders of venous origin), offer only 1-2modalities of therapy.

    THE VEIN CENTER

Are the facilities attractive and clean?Do the Center personnel present a pro-fessional demeanor? Vein specialistsgenerally do all their diagnostic workand perform their procedures right intheir vein center locations; so the ap-pearance of the office can tell you a lotabout the practice. Ask if there are Reg-istered Vascular Technologist (RVT) ul-trasound technicians on site. RVT techsare the most credentialed professionalsto perform ultrasound-guided diagnos-tics as part of the evaluation process.

T is the season to be fes-tive, and that usuallymeans stringing uphundreds of twinkling lights tocreate a welcoming glow ondark winter nights. Some peo-ple view the holiday season astheir chance to go all out withregard to decorating theirhomes with an abundance of lights, inflatable lawn orna-

ments and maybe even somemechanical figures.

While these decorationscertainly may be symbols of theseason, its easy to forget justhow much energy and resourcesthey consume. A typical strandof lights uses around 300 wattsof electricity. Multiply thosefigures by the dozens of strings

of lights people use and its easyto see how quickly energy usagecan add up.

In addition to lights, litcandles, animated dolls, wreaths, trees, and scores of imported ornaments contributeto the energy consumption perhousehold. Even so, environ-mentally conscious individualsneed not skip the holiday dcor

and entertaining. Fortunately, there are various ways to beenergy efficient with holidaydcor this season.

Switch to LED lights. LEDlights consume a fraction of theenergy traditional incandescentbulbs do. While a standardstring of 50 lights consumes 300watts, LED sets only consume

four watts. This not only savesenergy, but also considerableamounts of money over thecourse of the holiday season.

Use fiber-optic decora-tions. Fiber optic items are litby one light. The illuminationcarries through the fiber opticcables to the entire decoration.

Use a power strip andtimer. Plug decorations into a

power strip (be sure to followthe recommended power loadfor safety) and hook everythingup to a timer so lights are noton when no one can see them.

Check light strands.Always inspect lights for frayedwires and any damage. Frayedlights are less efficient and posea considerable safety risk.

Enhance decorations. Usemirrors and reflective orna-ments to give the appearance of more lights without actuallyadding more.

Turn off ambient lighting.Christmas tree lights or thelights framing a picture windowshould be sufficient to light up aroom. Keep lamps and over-head lighting off while the tree

is lit to save money and energy.Lower the thermostat.

When entertaining, turn thethermostat down a few degrees.Having extra people inyour home will raise the tem-perature. Similarly, heat gener-ated by the oven and othercooking appliances can warmup a home. Dont waste energy

    by keepingthe heatturned onhigh.

Investin recharge-able batter-ies. According to Energy Quest,40 percent of all batteries arepurchased during the holidayseason. To power those many

gifts and devices, use recharge-able batteries which can beused again and again.

Change your cookingpractices. Smaller appliancesuse less energy. Put those toast-er ovens, slow cookers and elec-tric fryers to good use. Only usethe oven if you are cooking alarge meal.

Wait until the dishwasher isfull. Pack in the dishes fromholiday meals, and only run the

dishwasher when it is full.Reuse items whenever

possible. Many items aroundthe house can be put to gooduse as decorations, holidayservers or gifts. Take inventoryof what you have before you goout and purchase new decora-tions.

Every Christmas Eve,children go to bedeagerly anticipating avisit from Santa Claus. Thismerry gentleman is purportedto visit the home of everygood girl and boy, deliveringgifts and cheer along the way.

Before the modern evolu-tion of Santa Claus lived avery real and generous indi-

vidual named Nicholas. In thethird century, Nicholas servedas the Bishop of Myrna inpresent-day Turkey. He had areputation for secret gift-giv-ing, believing that givingshould be done secretly andsacrificially in Jesus Christsname rather than ones own.Stories tell of Nicholas paying

the dowry for poor daughtersto enable them to get married. He reportedly put coins in theshoes of those who left themout for him. It is believed

Nicholas helped to restore thehope of hundreds of people inhis community, making him abeloved and revered Bishop.Throughout his ministry,

    Nicholas fervently shared his

life and fortune with others. Nicho las continued to

be revered and commemorat-ed by many Christians evenafter his death. His charityand unselfish works helpedinspire generations of thefaithful, and he eventuallywas named the patron saint of everyone from merchants to

sailors to pawnbrokers. No one really knows

what St. Nicholas looked like. But in 2005, a forensic labora-tory in England reviewed his-torical data and photographsof the remains taken from St.

Nicholas grave in the 1950s.Re-searchers concluded thathe was a small man, perhapsno more than five feet in

height, with a broken nose. This image certainly does

not fit with the robust frameand other imagery awarded St.

Nicholas in more modernyears. St. Nicholas is believedto be the inspiration for SantaClaus, which was a nametaken from the DutchSinterklaas, a contracted form

of Sint Nicolass, or St. Nicholas.

Tales of the real St. Nicholas giving spirit wereblended with a fictional per-sonification by New York-based newspaper writers whoblended the St. Nicholasname with the appearance of aDutch town citizen. The goalwas to reach out to the prima-

rily Dutch immigrants livingin New York at the time. Thisjolly elf image was given aboost by the publication of AVisit From St. Nicholas, which was published aroundthe same time.

Eventually, the merrySanta Claus portrayal began to

Though there is no official datathat declares the best-sellingholiday toy for children of all-

time, its fair to assume the lovableSesame Street figure Elmo is highon the list of most popular holidaytoys. Much of that popularity can betraced to the introduction of TickleMe Elmo in 1996. Though not the firstElmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo becamethe must-have gift of 1996, when par-ents searched far and wide for thedoll that laughed when users tickled

its stomach. During the holiday sea-son of 1996, many people paid farbeyond market price just so their chil-dren could wake up on Christmas orChanukah and have a Tickle MeElmo doll to call their own. Since1996, Elmo has been reincarnatedmany times over, and each Elmo dollseems to inspire its own craze comethe holiday season. Released in

1998, Walk N Talk Elmo was a pop-ular childrens gift, as was Rock NRoll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me ElmoSurprise (2001), Chicken DanceElmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo(2005). In 2006,Mattel, the compa-ny that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemora-

tive Elmo to mark the 10-yearanniversary of the introduction ofTickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked abuying frenzy, as some reports indi-cated private sellers were selling thelatest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, forthousands of dollars.

rectangle about 1 inch thick, cover the dough with plasticwrap, and refrigerate over-night.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet withparchment paper or a non-stick liner.

Unwrap the dough andplace on a floured work sur-face. If using a plaque with adesign, roll out the dough 1/3-

inch thick, lightly dust thetop with flour, press yourcookie molds over the dough, and then cut the shapes with asmall knife and place on theprepared baking sheet, spac-ing them about 1 inch apart.Alternatively, using the mold

as a guide, cut around it witha small knife, flip the moldover so the design is facingyou, and place the dough overit, pressing it into the design.Unmold the shapes onto theprepared baking sheet, leavingabout 1 inch between them.

Bake the cookies untillightly golden along the sidesbut still soft to the touch inthe centers, 7 to 15 minutes. The timing will depend on

the size of the individualcookies, or if you have made asingle large patterned piecethat will be cut after baking.

While the cookies arebaking, prepare the glaze. In asmall bowl, whisk togetherthe confectioners sugar and

water until smooth. When the cookies are

ready, remove from the ovenand let cool on the pan on awire rack for about 10 min-utes. Then, while the cookiesare still warm, using evenstrokes, brush a light coat of glaze on top of each cookie, evenly covering it. Let thecookies cool completely. When the glaze dries, itshould leave a shiny, opaque

finish. The cookies will keepin an airtight container in acool place for about 2 weeks. They do not freeze well, how-ever, as glaze becomes waterywhen they are thawed. Yields:12-20 cookies.

Complete the holiday season with gingerbread

T he holidayseason hasa r r i v e d ,and millions of people across theglobe will be cele-brating Christmaswith their familiesand friends. Thefollowing are some

interesting tidbitsto share with yourloved ones this hol-iday season.

Each year, more than threebillion Christmas cards aresent in the United Statesalone.

In 350 AD, Pope JuliusI, bishop of Rome, pro-claimed December 25 theofficial celebration date forthe birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theolo-gians have surmised thatChrist really wasnt born thistime of year, thanks toimagery and informationfrom the Bible.

Christmas carols beganas an English custom calledwassailing. Individuals

toasted neighbors to a longand healthy life.Despite the common

tale that three wise men paidhomage to baby Jesus, theBible never specifically callsout a number. Similarly, theres no specific indicationthat they visited the infant

Jesus. Their visit may haveoccurred when Jesus wasolder.

Santa Claus modernlook was inspired by writingsfrom The Knickerbockers of

    New York and imagery from

Clement Clarke Moores AVisit from St. Nicholas.Moore denied authoring thefamous poem for 15 yearsafter it was published anony-mously, feeling the poem wasbeneath his talents.

Santa has his own officialpostal code. Its H0 H0 H0.

The song Jingle Bellswas originally written forThanksgiving and notChristmas. People loved it somuch that the lyrics werechanged to fit Christmas.

Christmas trees typical-ly grow for 15 years before

theyre cut and sold. Thismeans the trees sold todaywere likely planted in 1999.

Ch ri stm as w as notdeclared an official holidayin the United States until

June 26, 1870.Before turkey, the tradi-

tional Christmas meal servedin England was a pigs headand mustard.

    Male reindeer tend to

shed their antlers in the win-ter. This means Santas rein-deer are likely female.

    Christ may have been

born in a cave rather than amanger. According to thegospel of Luke, the shepherdsthat helped find shelter forMary to give birth kept theirflock in a cave. The Churchof the Nativity in Bethlehemis built over a cave called theGrotto of the Nativity, where

Jesus is beli eved to have beenborn.

Many people may be lessinclined to stand undermistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what mistletoemeans in the ancientGermanic language. It liter-ally means dung on a twig, for the bird who eats theberries and then leaves seedsin droppings to propagatenew plants.

Each holiday season,PNC Wealth Managementcalculates the costs of thegifts in the song, The 12Days of Christmas. Theprice index for the gifts wentfrom $12,673 in 1984 to

more than $24,000 in 2011.The most expensive gift isthe swimming swans.
