    Creating a beautiful and

    bountiful garden is a

    popular pastime for peo-

ple all across the country. It is

important to keep in mind that

aesthetically appealing plantsmay be appetizing to area

    wildlife, including deer. Those

who do not want their gardens to

    turn into an all-you-can-eat buf-

fet for deer, rabbits and other

wild animals can take a more

    proactive approach to gardening.

    Deer are opportunists who

will no doubt see your garden as a

salad bar ripe with all of their

    favorite foods. As housing devel-

opments continue to encroachon the natural habitats of deer

    and other animals, these animals

    are becoming more visible. Deer

may not be able to forage for food

    effectively in their smaller, natu-

    ral surroundings, or they may

    become accustomed to the easy

    pickings they find in neighbor-

hood yards. Either way, you may

encounter a deer in or around

    your area.

    Keeping deer at bay involves

    some work and maintenance on

the part of a homeowner. There

are safe and humane methods to

repelling deer, or at least block-

ing access to the plants worth

    protecting. Here are the main

    ways to deer-proof a garden.

    FENCE IT

Fences are one way to deter

deer from entering a yard and

dining on your garden. Keep in

mind that deer can jump fences

that are quite tall, but they have

    to be especially motivated to

    jump an eight-foot-tall fence.

Still, they tend to be wary about

scaling a fence when they cannot

see what is on the other side.

Therefore, if you are fencing out

deer, choose a fence that camou-

flages the garden well and com-

pletely encloses the area to beprotected. If you do not want the

fence to be solid, consider put-

ting stakes or thorny plants with-

in the garden so that the deer will

hesitate to jump into the garden.

    SCARE THEM

    Deer are naturally skittish

    around people, but over time

    they can become quite compla-

    cent around human beings. Once

    a deer decides that something

will not present a threat, the deercan adapt to its presence.

    Motion-activated devices

may not work, nor the presence

of pets. Predator urine is typically

an effective way at keeping deer

at bay. Bottled coyote urine can

    be quite effective, although

    The APG retirement

    and estate planning

    specialist brings to the

    table his or her unwavering,

    unparalleled, non-shakable

    belief and conviction that

what APG does for our clients

    is absolutely the finest oppor-

tunity or solution to their par-

    ticular financial situation or

    problem without exception!

    The paragraph above is

the APG credo that each of

    our franchisees across the

    country works and lives by.

What is your personal or busi-

ness credo? Do you have one?

Are you prepared to make a

    public affirmation of your busi-

    ness intentions, mission state-

ment or mantra? Do you feel

    comfortable standing on a soap

box, yelling out to the specta-

    tors, audience and your intend-

ed prospects, that you stand for

    something? Does your passion

and plan for winning at your

    business, occupation, project

    or goal include helping others

    succeed in achieving their

    goals, dreams and ambitions? If

so, then you are on the right

    path to prosperity!

    You reap what you sow.

    What goes around comes

    around. The laborer is worthy

of his hire. Luck is spelled W-

    O-R-K. Success is spelled S-W-

E-A-T. You beat 98 percent of

    your competition by consis-

    tently showing up first and

    leaving last. He who serves

best will best be served. Do you

need a check-up from the neck

up? Do you put your perspira-

    tion behind your inspiration?

    Do you constantly display a

winning attitude? Are you partof a T.E.A.M. where together,

    everyone achieves more?

Practice the 7 Ps in every area

    of your life: Proper Prior

    Planning Prevents Poor Per-

formance Period! If a job is

    worth doing, its worth doing

well. If it is to be, its up to me.

    Which one of these

    phrases above paints a picture

of you? Which one or more

would you like to adopt intoyour life? Creating and believ-

ing in one of these mission

    statements will keep you warm

at night knowing that you are

    on fire and climbing higher!

    Retirees share certain

    common goals. Every retiree or

    near-term retiree I have ever

met shares the same goals with

their money: 1. Safety of prin-

cipal. 2. Income for life. 3.

Growth of capital. 4. Liquidity.5. Tax advantages.

    No one has ever objected

to these five basic principles of

    retirement planning. The pri-

mary problem I have found in

my 32 years in this industry is

that very few people start purs-

    ing the proper financial dreams

    and goals early enough. The

    second problem was a general

lack of education of how, why,

    when and where to accomplish

    these universal retirement

    goals, compounded by the fact

that the price of failing to pre-pare was never made apparent

    to them.

    Ignorance is not an

excuse. Neither is the fact that

    the subjects of wealth accumu-

    lation and creating a never-

    ending retirement income are

    barely approached in the pub-

    lic school system. What goes

up, must come down. The law

of gravity need not be taught

in school for people to under-stand that gravity exists and

neither should the law that you

will need money to retire in

the future and it is your own

    responsibility to provide it for

    yourself. (Unless, of course,

you were born with a multi-

    million dollar trust fund,

which most of us were not!)

    Today, everyone is

    charged with the responsibility

    to be self-funded, self-motivat-ed, self-sufficient, self-complet-

    ing and self-satisfied with the

    results of their financial activi-

    ties throughout their lifetime.

    Remember; even if you didnt

    Anew study shows that

    blackberries could

    lead to healthy gums.

The study states that the anti-

    bacterial properties of black-

berries lower the risk of gum

    disease and promote gum

    health.

    There are also prior

    studies that have indicated

the positive aspects of black-berries, claiming they pre-

    vent cancerous cells from

    spreading.

    Many studies have

shown that eating a diet filled

    with fruits and vegetables is

    beneficial to ones health.

This type of diet also lowers

the risk of oral cancer, dia-

    betes, heart disease and other

    ailments.

    Since good oral health

leads to good overall health, it

    can be extremely beneficial

    for people to incor-

    porate blackberriesinto their diets.

    When renovating

    a home, many

    homeowners look

    to increase the homes curb

    appeal. Curb appeal is a

term used to describe how the

    homes exterior appears to

    buyers the moment they pull

up to the curb. A home that

    impresses prospective buyers

before they even go inside is

said to have a strong curb

    appeal, and that curb appeal

can add significant value to a

    home.

    Homeowners looking to

    improve the curb appeal of

their home can do so in a vari-

ety of ways. One often over-

    looked yet effective way to

    make a homes exterior more

    appealing is to revamp the

    driveway. Driveways may not

    be high on a homeowners

    renovation totem pole, but a

    cracked or unsightly driveway

    can give prospective buyers

    the impression that a home

    has not been properly taken

    care of. When addressing a

    driveway, homeowners have a

    host of paving materials at

    their disposal.

    ASPHALT

    Asphalt is an affordable

    paving material, which likely

plays a role in its popularity

    among homeowners. Asphalt

is also easy to install and

    requires little maintenance,

    two additional benefits to

    homeowners who dont have

much time to install or look

    after their driveway. Asphalt

is made from a combination of

    concrete, gravel and tar, and

    though its easy and affordable

Various materials can be used to pave a driveway

A well-maintained driveway can add to a homes curb appeal.

    Keeping fit is essential

    for the older popula-

    tion, but many forms

    of exercise can be difficult.

Pilates is a great way to stay

    in shape while reducing the

    risk of injury other exercises

    may cause. Pilates focuses on

    the quality of movement,

making it one of the best

    ways for seniors to stay

    healthy.

    Pilates is suitable for

    everyone, regardless of age or

    level of fitness. Pilates can

    enhance your immune sys-

    tem, breathing and circula-

    tion, while reducing stress,

    fatigue, headaches and back-

    aches.

    Pilates lengthens the

    muscles of the body instead

of building bulk. This is great

    for the older population

    because it improves balance,

    posture and alignment. All of

    these things are important to

    continue our daily activities

    efficiently. Each Pilates move

    has a beginner, intermediate

    and advanced stage, so the

class can be adapted to the

    individual.

It is never too late to

    start exercising, and the gen-

tle stretches of Pilates are a

    perfect place to start.

    Colleen Fox is the well-

    ness coordinator at Cedar

    Crest, has a Bachelors Degree

    in exercise physiology and is

certified in Pilates. If you are

    interested in the class, please

    call the Cedar Crest Fitness

    Center at 973-831-3631.

    Intestinal parasites can cause

    debilitating medical prob-

lems to dogs and cats, and

even to us humans! Most pets

    will have worms at some

    point in their lifetimes. These

    worms are most commonly

seen in puppies and kittens but

    any animal is susceptible, even

a pet that never goes outside.

    Roundworms, hookworms,

    whipworms, giardia, and coc-

cidia are the most common cul-

    prits of these infections.

    Routine dewormings and fecal

    examinations are the mainstays

    of identification and treatment

    of these parasites. Year round

    total parasite control, usually in

the form of a monthly heart-

    worm preventative, is the way

    to decrease the incidence of

    intestinal parasite infections.

    Fecal exams performed by

    your veterinarian can diagnose

    intestinal parasites by identify-

ing the eggs of the worms.

    Adult worms like roundworms,

    hookworms, and whipworms

are usually not shed in stools,

    making identification by the

    pet owner difficult. However,

the eggs of these worms are

    present, though they are shed

    intermittently. These eggs are

microscopic and too small to be

    detected with the naked eye.

    The Companion Animal

    Parasite Councils guidelines

    recommend fecal examinations

two to four times during the

first year of life and one to two

    times per year in adults,

    depending on health and

    lifestyle factors.

    Roundworms are the most

    common intestinal parasite of

    dogs and cats. Roundworm eggs

are shed in the feces of dogs

and cats and are spread when

animals or people come in con-

tact with the feces or soil.

These worms can also be trans-

    mitted to puppies before they

are born and to kittens through

    infected milk from the mother.

    Roundworms can cause diar-

    rhea, vomiting, and the potbel-

    ly appearance seen in many

    puppies. Roundworms do pose

    a significant risk to humans.

    Contact with contaminated

soil or feces can result in

    human ingestion and infection.

    Children are more vulnerable

    to exposure because they are

more likely to put dirt or other

    objects into their mouths.

    Roundworms in humans can

cause fever, lung and liver dam-

    age, and even blindness.

    Hookworms are also a

    common parasite in dogs and

    cats. These worms are acquired

by adult pets through skin pen-

    etration and ingestion of larvae

    in contaminated soil. Puppies

and kittens can also be infected

    across the placenta and

    through milk. These worms

    hook themselves to the intes-

tinal wall and feed on blood,

    and can rapidly cause anemia

    and sometimes black, tarry

    stool. Hookworm larvae can

    infect humans by penetrating

the surface of a persons skin,

    typically through bare feet.

This results in itchiness at the

    point where the larvae enter

the skin and visible tracks on

    the skin from the worms

    migration called cutaneous

    larva migrans.

    Whipworms infect only

our dogs, not cats. The worms

are passed in the feces and can

    cause bloody diarrhea in dogs.

    The biggest issue with whip-

worms is how tough they are in

    the environment, surviving

    adverse conditions and ex-

    tremely resistant to drying.

    This makes prevention and

    diagnosis very important.

    The good news is

    intestinal parasites are easi-

    ly treated with medication

    as prescribed by your veteri-

    narian. The Companion

    Animal Parasite Councils

    guideline for deworming and

    prevention is as follows:

    Administer dewormer to pup-

pies at two, four, six, and eight

    weeks of age, followed by

    administration of a monthly

    preventive. Administer bi-

    weekly dewormer treatment to

    kittens between three and nine

    weeks of age, followed by

    administration of a monthly

    preventive. Administer year-

    round treatment with a heart-

    worm preventive that has

    broad-spectrum activity against

    intestinal parasites. If your pet

    was positive for worms,

    rechecking the feces is impor-

tant to make sure all worms

    have been eliminated.

    This is not a complete

    list of intestinal parasites and

is not meant to scare you into

fearing your pet, but to vali-

    date the importance of regu-

    lar fecal exams and year-

    round total parasite preven-

    tion. To prevent or control

    intestinal parasites, consult

    your local veterinarian. For

    more information on guide-

    lines, visit www.petsandpara

    sites.org.

    Parents of yesteryear sel-

    dom had to worry

    about protecting their

    kids from strangers once their

    kids were safely inside the

home. But since the dawn of

    the Internet, parents know

the safety of their private res-

    idence can be easily compro-

    mised. Be it through social

    media, chat rooms or other

    online outlets, strangers can

    now gain access to children

in a variety of ways, many of

    which are seemingly inno-

    cent.

    The prevalence of on-

    line predators has many par-

ents looking for ways to pro-

tect their kids when they go

    online. Some parents may

    want to outlaw the Internet

    altogether until kids reach

high school, but such a reac-

tion can put kids at a signifi-

    cant disadvantage academi-

    cally by barring them from

    what is often a valuable

    resource. Parents who want

their kids to get the most out

    of the Internet without put-

ting them in danger of online

    predators can employ the

    following tips.

    Warn kids about the poten-

tial risks and dangers of the

    Internet. Many parents

    would prefer their kids did

    not know about Internet

    predators, but that wish

    should not outweigh the

    desire to keep kids safe.

    Teach kids that people on

    the Internet may not always

    behave honestly, misrepre-

    senting themselves in an

effort to gain access to unsus-

    pecting and often trusting

kids. Teach kids to take the

    same approach with online

    strangers that they do with

    strangers they see in public,

    never sharing any personal

    information or engaging in

    conversation with someone

    they dont know. Teach kids

to tell an adult they trust

    immediately if an online

    stranger contacts them.

Use the filters at your dis-

    posal. Parents can filter cer-

    tain Web sites so children

    cannot access them. Filter

    sites geared toward adults as

well as any sites where kids

might be at risk of coming

    into contact with potential

    predators. Block chat rooms

    and other sites where adults

can pose as kids and make

    sure kids who are involved

    with social media have made

    their online profiles private

    and only accessible to friends

    and family members.

    Monitor kids online activi-

ty on a daily basis. The

    Internet is such a commonly

used tool that many kids go

online at least once per day.

    Homework assignments and

    other school functions are

    commonly posted online,

    and many kids communicate

    with friends via the Internet

as much as they do in person.

    Parents should monitor their

    kids online activity on a

    daily basis; scanning their

    Web history and examining

    their social media interac-

tions to be sure kids arent

    putting themselves in harms

    way. Kids may grow more

    resistant to such monitoring

as they grow older, but par-

ents cannot turn a blind eye

    to kids online activity sim-

    ply to avoid a confrontation.

    The kitchen is ar-

    guably the most-used

    room in the house

    during waking hours. Having

a kitchen that is laid out in an

    efficient manner can improve

    productivity and make for a

    more enjoyable experience.

    Designers often stress having

    an effective work triangle in

    the kitchen. The phrase

    kitchen work triangle start-

    ed with the Building Research

    Council (formerly the Small

    Homes Council) at the

    University of Illinois. The

    idea came from studies of

space usage and the search for

    efficient kitchen designs.

    What the triangle essentially

    means is positioning three key

items of the kitchen for effi-

    ciency. The stove, sink and

    refrigerator represent the

three main points of the trian-

    gle. Having these items spaced

    accordingly can make work

    easier. Having them too close

    together can create a

    cramped, ineffective room.

    The placement of the triangle

to install, asphalt, as any kid

can tell you, can get awfully

    hot under the summer sun.

    Asphalt can also crack rather

    easily, so homeowners must

    weigh its immediate afford-

    ability against the likelihood

that perhaps it will need to be

    replaced sooner than other

    materials.

    BRICK

    Brick is among the more

    expensive paving materials, as

    brick is a labor-intensive

    material to install. But brick

    allows homeowners to create

    distinctive patterns that can

add quite a bit to a homes

    curb appeal. Once installed,

    brick driveways dont require

    much maintenance, though

cracked bricks will need to be

    replaced.

    COBBLESTONE

    Cobblestone can be very

pleasing to the eye, but that

    aesthetic appeal wont come

    cheap. Among the more

    expensive paving materials,

    cobblestone can also be a

    handful to maintain, as weeds

    can penetrate the cobble-

    stones rather easily. Loose or

    missing stones can be unsight-

ly and will need to be

    replaced.

    Many homeowners who

    love the look of cobblestone

choose to use it along walk-

ways or on their patios, as

    these areas wont require as

    much materials, saving both

money and the time it takes to

    maintain the cobblestones.

    CONCRETE

    Concrete is perhaps the

    ideal paving material for the

    homeowner who wants to

    express his or her individuali-

    ty. Thats because concrete

driveways can be laid in a

    variety of colors and designs,

    adding a touch of personality

    in a place many homeowners

    likely thought such expression

    was impossible.

    Though affordable, con-

crete can fall victim to the

    elements, as extremely cold

    temperatures can cause the

    concrete to shift and ultimate-

    ly crack. Concrete pavers can

    remedy this problem, though

that will add to the overall

    cost of the project.

    GRAVEL

    A gravel driveway can

give a home a historical look

that few of todays homes can

    boast. Gravel is an affordable

    material that requires little

    maintenance, though weeds

    can grow through gravel and

    must be removed to maintain

    the driveways appeal.

Washout is a concern for some

    who want a gravel driveway,

    but edging the driveway with

a material like timber or blue-

    stone can prevent the gravel

    from washing away should

    heavy rains fall.

points alone does not make a

    successful layout. According

    to the University of Missouri

    Extension, the triangle space

    should also be measuredac-

cordingly. Put 4 to 7 feet

    between the refrigerator and

sink, 4 to 6 feet between the

sink and stove and 4 to 9 feet

    between the stove and refrig-

    erator, with the ideal size

    resulting in a work triangle

    where the three sides total

    between 15 and 22 feet.

    human urine may work as

    well. Reapplying the product

weekly around the plants is a

    good idea.

    REPEL THE DEER

    There are many organic

    or chemically-based products

on the market that deer may

find offensive to the taste or

    smell.

    Hot pepper, sulfur and

eggs or even the use of soapy

    water have been successful in

    certain instances. The use of

    blood meal or even human

    hair around the garden may

repel the deer and keep them

    on a different foraging path.

    However, remember that any

deer that is very hungry may

    ignore unpleasant tastes or

    smells for a quick bite.

    CHANGE PLANTS

    If other food sources are

    available, there are some

    species of plants and trees

    that deer will avoid. Filling

    your garden with these plants

can help you maintain a beau-

    tiful, albeit untasty, environ-

    ment for deer.

    When planting annuals,

    select among:

    Alyssum, Begonias,

    Calendula, Celosia,

    Dianthus, Foxglove,

    Geraniums, Parsley, Poppy,

    Snapdragons

    In terms of perennials, plant

    these items once, and deer

    could stay away:

    Ageratum, Anemone, Astibe,

    Bearded iris, Catmint,

    Honeysuckle, Lantana,

    Monkshood, Rock rose,

    Rosemary, Soapwort,

    Wisteria

    Plant these herbs alongside

    flowers for even more pro-

    tection:

    Chives, Eucalyptus, Garlic,

    Mint, Thyme, Wintergreen

    Gardeners who use a

    combination of methods to

keep deer out of their yards

and gardens may have a high-

    er success rate at deterring

    these animals.

    Soup-only suste-nance, de-toxify-

    ing smoothies

    and fat-burning super-

foods are just a few of

    the many ways people

    have attempted to lose

    weight in recent years.

    Although many diets

    can help a person shed

    unwanted pounds or get

    healthier, many more

fail to address the prob-lems boomerang dieters often

    face: the fundamental lifestyle

    choices that lead to weight

    gain in the first place.

    A common problem for

dieters is the inability to keep

    weight off once they have

    lost it. Registered dieticians

    Julie Upton and Katherina

    Brooking, authors of the book,

    The Real Skinny: Appetite for

    Healths 101 Fat Habits & SlimSolutions (Tarcher/Penguin),

find that there is a pattern to

    the weight gain yo-yo. That

    pattern, the authors suggest,

    often involves unhealthy fat

    habits that are a common

    component of dieting woes.

    Once these poor lifestyle

    choices are recognized and

    replaced with slim solutions,

weight loss and a healthy rela-

    tionship with food is much

    more attainable.

    Upton, a representative

    of the American Dietetic

    Assoc-iation and frequent

    contributor to national news

    programs, and Brooking, who

has a masters degree in nutri-tion science from Columbia

    University, combine their

    experience and expertise on

the subject of food and also

    include data collected from

    numerous nutritionists and

    dieticians in their book.

    Instead of toutingquick-fixes, gimmicks

    and the latest trendy

    food, the authors

    present a weight-loss

    guide that offers real

    solutions for real life.

    Examples of some of

    the strategies offered

    in the book include:

    Stop placing blame

    on others or finding

excuses why you cantlose weight and focus on the

    ways you can.

    Understand the facts behind

    metabolic rate and find the

right number to burn the max-

    imum number of calories.

    Know the difference

    between curves and extra

    pounds.

    Recognize that losing weight

    is actually the easy part.

Keeping the weight off is thereal challenge. Aiming for

    smaller goals (5 percent of

body weight at a time) can

help you keep weight off over

    the long haul.

    Exercise is essential. Few

    people can keep weight in

    check without increas-ing physical activity.

    Increase the amount of

    protein you eat, which

    can help you feel sated

    and less likely to

    overeat. Upton and

    Brooking suggest these

    protein powerhouses

    that are under 200

    calories per serving.

    1. Almonds: One

ounce provides 170calories and 6 grams

    of protein.

    2. Peanut butter sandwich:

    Peanut butter on whole-grain

bread is tasty and portable and

    offers heart-healthy fat.

    3. Parmesan popcorn: Sprinkle

    low-fat microwave popcorn

    with 2 tablespoons of grated

    parmesan cheese to add pro-

tein and calcium to the snack.

    4. Pistachios: One ounce ofpistachios is equal to 49 nuts.

    Thats an impressive snack at

    160 calories with high fiber.

    Leading by example with

    inspiration and suggestions

    anyone can follow, The Real

    Skinny can safely help read-

    ers attain a slimmer, healthier

body. A 14-day meal plan and

    easy recipes are included in

the book, which is available in

digital format and anywheremajor books are sold.

computer should be kept in a

common area where parentscan monitor how much time

    kids are spending online,

    what theyre doing and who

    theyre speaking to while

    surfing the Internet. When

    kids have their own comput-

ers or tablets in their bed-

    rooms, parents can easily lose

track of how much time kids

are spending online. Thismakes it easier for online

    predators to gain access to

kids, who have a harder time

    recognizing potential preda-

    tors than adults.

    Remember kids can get

    online on their Smart-

    phones, too. Computers are

no longer the only way for

kids to get online. More andmore kids, especially those in

    high school, are doing their

    online surfing via their

    Smartphones. Monitor kids

    mobile phone usage just like

    you do their computer usage.

    Peruse their call and texting

    history, and discuss any sus-

    pect usage with them imme-

    diately.

    Kids spend more time

online now than ever before, and that usage figures to

    increase in the coming years

    as the Internet becomes

    increasingly accessible.

    Parents should take steps to

    ensure their youngsters are

safe when going online.Call to schedule acomplimentary consultation:
