“What we are facing in education is a Crisis of Significance.”

- Michael Wesch

Page 30: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration

Of 2007 HS Graduates nationwide…

• 28% found school meaningful

• 21% found school interesting

• 39% said school will lead to success in their future

And those were the students who graduated…

What do your classrooms say?

• To learn is to acquire information

• Information is scarce

• Gather your information from the teacher

• Trust the authority of the information

• Follow along

Fussing the Definition

Deep Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge:

Knowledge is deep when it concerns the central ideas of a topic or discipline with enough thoroughness to explore connections and relationships and to produce relatively complex understandings.

Depth is produced, in part, by covering fewer topics in systemic and connected ways. For students, knowledge is deep when they make clear distinctions, develop arguments, solve problems, construct explanations, and otherwise work with relatively complex understandings.

Deep procedural knowledge occurs when students have internalized the concepts, rules, and procedures required to carry out a task. They are then able to take their understandings, identify goals and plan and implement steps to reach goals that take into account all environmental factors that may impact them completing the task. Teaching for Understanding as well as a Balanced Assessment System are characteristics of teaching for acquisition of Deep Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge.

Change goes deeper than technology use.

The common denominator is “What is the best for

learning?”

Page 57: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration
Page 58: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration

There is as much danger in doing too much technology during professional development as doing too little.

Successful schools have targeted goals and

coaching

Page 59: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration
Page 60: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration

Technology is a tool, not the end result.

Start with what is important

Page 61: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration
Page 62: 21st Century Schools, Iowa Core, and Technology Integration

1)Tool, or technology used

2)Specific place in the curriculum

3)Overall purpose of teaching, or the “big skill”
