Our schedule features a Sunday mid-afternoon arrival, welcome dinner and keynote, with classes running Monday through Wednesday. We’ll spend each of our three days examining a single crucial topic in teaching: reading across the curriculum, literature circles, writing-reading connec- tions. We begin each day as a whole group, with an interactive keynote featuring a major leader in the field. Then everyone meets in grade level or job-alike groups, each facilitated by a master teacher or national author, where we apply the morning's ideas to our own students and situations. During lunch, we hear a mini-keynote on the topic of the day from another expert in the field. Then, participants choose from a wide assortment of practical workshops where everyone can join actively in demonstrations, discuss issues among peers, and plan specific applications to take back home. Our meeting schedule of 8:30 AM– 3:30 PM leaves plenty of time for extra team meetings, independent reading and writing, socializing, sightseeing, and enjoying the attractions of the Lake Geneva area. Mpdbujpo Once again,Walloon will meet in the Geneva Lakes area, one of the Midwest’s premier resort destinations. Lake Geneva, on the Illinois-Wisconsin border, is about 1 1/2 hours from Chicago and an hour from Milwaukee. This lovely area has been a favored resort for summer refugees from both cities for a century, and its lakeside mansions bear some famous names: Schwinn,Wrigley,Armour. Today, the Geneva Lakes area offers every conceivable aquatic attraction from sailboats to jet-skis, a rich shopping and antiquing scene, a delicious assortment of top-notch restaurants, and plenty of sightseeing options. Ifbervbsufst!Ipufm Situated on 275 wooded acres overlooking picturesque Delavan Lake, Lake Lawn Resort is one of Southeastern Wisconsin's most historic and popular vacation, meeting and special event destinations. Just 8 miles west of Lake Geneva, Lake Lawn Resort is a full-service, first-class resort with all the amenities. The hotel offers a golf course on-site, indoor and outdoor swimming, tennis, boating, biking, hiking, volleyball, and fitness center. The hotel also operates a daily kids program for parents who want to bring their families. And if all this up-north serenity is too tame for your tastes, the big-city diversions of Milwaukee and Chicago are only an hour or two away, and our faculty will happily supply you with restaurant and entertainment suggestions. Dear Walloon Alumni and Friends, As you can see from our latest flyers and website pages, the Walloon Institute is refining its focus in upcoming programming. In 2005 and beyond, you'll see a stronger emphasis on reading and writing, up through the grades and across the curriculum. We'll offer a smaller number of course titles, but with more choices, speakers, and hands-on workshops within those vital topics. And we’ve developed a new Institute schedule built around key literacy structures (like writing workshop, literature circles, writing across the curriculum, and reading workshop) that devotes a full day to each of these “best practices.” Since we began in 1989,Walloon has always been about growing lifelong readers and writers. We’ve had strands on reading, writing and curriculum development in all 27 programs that we've run over 15 years. But more recently, we added courses on school reform, high school restructuring, school district leadership, and related topics. While we're proud to have served in those areas, and treasure the people we’ve met while doing that work, we are happily returning to our original mission. Our 4,500 alumni keep reminding us that Walloon provides a unique and powerful kind of professional development in K–12 literacy that no other program quite matches. And our veteran faculty is eager to do what they do best—helping you help your students to fall in love with books, writing, inquiry, and the power of words. I hope this sounds as good to you as it does to us. See you soon at the new/old Walloon!
