Energy Resources – natural resources that humans use to produce energy.

There are many types of renewable and nonrenewable energy resources and all of the energy released from these resources ultimately comes from the sun.

Where do humans get useful energy? The energy resources on which humans

currently depend the most are fossil fuels.

What are fossil fuels?

Fossil Fuels – nonrenewable energy resources that form in the Earth’s crust over millions of years from the buried remains of once-living organisms.

How do fossil fuels work?

Energy is released from fossil fuels when they are burned.

There are many types of fossil fuels, which exist as liquids, gases, and solids, and humans use a variety of methods to obtain and process them which can sometimes have negative effects on the environment.

Liquid Fossil Fuels

Petroleum – crude oil, an oily mixture of flammable organic compounds from which liquid fossil fuels and other products, such as asphalt, are separated.

Coal forms underground over millions of years from decayed swamp plants.

The higher the carbon content, the cleaner the material burns.

Problems with Coal

People began to use coal less because burning coal often produces large amounts of air pollution and because better energy resources were discovered.
