Over the past 18 months, the world has seen great suffering. In fact, history is defined, and remembered, through punctuations
of suffering: tragedy, war, disasters, and pandemic. But the heroes of the past 18 months, of history, and of our lives, are our vitally
compassionate neighbors, friends, and loved ones. Even moments of insurmountable darkness, hopelessness, loneliness, and fear are overcome. Not by time. Not by selfish determination or ambition, but through kindness and generosity. I’m sure, as you’re reading
this, you can think of a moment when generosity made an impossible situation bearable. A generous spirit has the power
to transform entire communities.

offered online fitness classes, educational materials, social “zoom” meetings, parking lot Tai Chi practice, medical transportation to appointments and vaccine clinics, and we served meals drive-through style at each of our centers. We did our best to boost people’s moods by dressing up in costumes, having art contests, making check-in phone calls, and holding special events like the drive-through ice cream social. During those months of 2020, we served unprecedented numbers adding over a thousand new people to our service. The only way we were able to do all of that was by the generosity of people in our community who sent us envelopes with donations of various amounts to show their appreciation and support. We were also blessed by people
who would offer words of encouragement to the staff or express their gratitude through a sweet note.
While people in the community gave generously in this time of crisis, what people often don’t realize is that nonprofit organizations, like Senior Action, depend on generosity to offer our services all of the time, not just during a crisis. Some may not realize that we are a nonprofit organization, while others think that since we charge a fee for membership, we don’t need additional support. And still others don’t understand the breadth of services we offer and the thousands of people who receive services from us each year.
Senior Action is a nonprofit organization that gives away over $2 million dollars
in free services each year. Outside of those services, our membership programs cost close to $500 per person and we only pass along a small percentage of that cost to the members ($100). The rest we must raise each year through grants, fundraising, lots of faith and prayers, and generosity of the community.
But generosity should not be confused with self-sacrifice. It is not reluctant, begrudging surrender. True, loving generosity is a celebration— it is to say, “I am grateful for you, I am here with you, and you and I are connected.” Poet Kahlil Gibran wrote, in The Prophet, “You often say, ‘I would give,
but only to the deserving.’ The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture. They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish.” True generosity is the understanding that giving and receiving are inexorably linked. There is a reason we celebrate all that we have received with giving.
As we approach this holiday season, remind the people you love that you could not make it through the darkness without them. And if Senior Action has given to you, give back. If you’ve received joy and hope from the people
here, give back in the ways you can. Maybe it’s through making a financial gift or buying gift certificates for friends who need Senior Action in their life. Maybe it’s by joining our volunteer corps and giving through service. Maybe it’s writing a sweet note to a staff member and sharing words of affirmation.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau said, “If you realize you are only a violin, open yourself up by playing your role in the concert.” No matter your role, we are grateful for you.
